Is it worth buying an unfinished project? I bought this 1.8t 2001 Audi TT "barn find" with a completely disassembled engine and parts everywhere! The previous owner did buy some good Audi 1.8t Mods like turbo upgrade, forged engine internal and more. Thank you all for the support on this project. I bought this thing in July of 2021, so its been a LONG time. It's also fun to watch the camera work get so much better as the video goes on. Someone once told me the most expensive car you’ll ever own is a cheap Audi. I’ve remembered that every time I’m tempted by the cheap asking price for one of these early model TTs. So far I’ve managed to resist and thanks to all your hard work putting this amazing series together I think I’ve gotten it out of my system. Thanks 😊

Really enjoyed watching this series. I bought an 05 TT225 new. Within months I had upgraded Turbo, clutch, blow off, 3.5" downpipe no kitty, straight back to Borla race mufler, upgraded boost hoses, upgraded intercooler ect..ect.... 10k including parts, labor and custom tuning (this was back in 2006). My car dynoed right around 485hp, 465tq (calculated crank, awd dyno. Do not remember wheel numbers). I freaking loved that car. I drove it hard every time I drove it which was often. Was not even my daily driver and I put nearly 90,000 miles on it in 2 1/2 year. To my surprise, nothing broke, I mean nothing at all broke. A testament to the foged internals of the 225 model. I have been an Audi, VW, Porsche fan boy ever since.

Really cool story man, but I call bs. First of all, back in 06, even having 300hp in a 1,8t was really unique. It was just before 2010 when people started cracking the 400-500hp barrier. Putting on 90k miles in 2,5 years is 40k miles per year, which is still wayyy to much for a non-daily. But here is the dealbreaker: the „forged internals“ of the 225 are just the 9.0:1 Pistons and the crankshaft. The rods are literally the same little weak rods as in the 180/150 variants. These rods basically give up with a guarantee around 290hp and 380Nm (280 lb ft). Has been tested uncountable times. So you running those numbers on stock internals and stock compression is basically impossible, especially being reliable for 90k miles. Stop lying on the internet man

You will find the turning shop that was in MD specializing in Audi/VW, should even see an old magazine cover with a tt over 500hp on it (not mine, another customer of theirs). It was a 180 with block opened and built. I call bullshit on your bullshit because I don't think you knew anyone spending 10k+ on just motor in 05/06 ! I beat ZR1s then with ease as well as Turbocharged 350zs and gave full built blower Mustangs ass beatings from a dig through 130/140 mph range.

@@bladejames8208I wouldn’t doubt the numbers, there’s a guy who pushes over 600hp on stock blocks, he just has it set up for slower spool up to be easier on the internals. He’s gone through a few engines 😅 it’s just really impressive yours made it that long with no problems. Currently went full forged internals bored over, cammed and balanced etc.. just to be safe, can’t wait to finish her up!

@carrocarro1972 42 Draft Designs. I received one of his first 3.5" flex downpipes for an MK1 TT 225. He was still manufacturing out of his garage production at the time. They don't seen to be making a 3.5" anymore? I see a 3" version available. I had to call and speak with him in person to order my downpipe at the time. He filed for a business license 4/13/2006. I have no doubt the 3" newer version performs just as well as the original individual hand made 3.5" versions. I had a clunk (not a really loud clunk but, could hear exhaust/downpipe contacting bottom edge of firewall" when first installed upon hard shifting. Upgrading the trans mounts, motor mount bushings made the clunk stop.

Wouldn’t the machine shop take the studs out to clean the gasket surface? But then again what do I know, I’m a jewelry mechanic. BTW, was that a non-metal non-copper manifold gasket? Or maybe that is only needed for headers.

In regards to old fuel, I had to replace every fuel line on a 964 911 that had been sitting for 25 years. When I drained the tank it smelled like literal paint thinner, we had full fans airing out the shop for days. The car only had about 4000 miles on the odo but the owner was fine with replacing as much was needed to make it a good daily driver.

the old 1.8t are great machines. I myself bought 2021 a4 b5 00vm 1.8t ANB and in 4 years I have driven 228tkm (141672mails). the car had driven 300tkm when I bought it and it had undergone a major maintenance due to a clogged oil pump filter. Now the meter has 528tkm (328083 miles) and every day it works perfectly in the frost-ravaged north.

The motors in question are starting to be +24 years old, so yes, they start to show faults, but they are really cheap and easy to repair. the biggest fault is a clogged oil pump strainer and in the winter it's very cold, so you don't have to run the machine for a long time without oil flow when the machine breaks down. in my country these machines are driven for 400-600k km when well maintained. I bought this car cheap myself, which has had a bad or actually non-existent service history. it does not mean that these engines are bad. The repair costs were around 800e. For comparison, the volvo v70 d5 17vm egr cooler cost 750e as a new part. a new engine for that Volvo was 6000e. and it only got 230,000 km

To have forged internals, head work, and an upgraded turbo and FMIC and only make around 200hp with a 1.8L is pretty sad. Great videos though.

Exactly what I thought too. Being from EU, I've seen 1.8t's run much higher horsepower with less spend on it. Ofc with the risk of everything blowing up, but you know.

The moral of the story is: if you want your car to be more powerful then buy a different car. At the end it will be less expensive, especially if you are not a skilled mechanic like Charles and you have to pay someone to do it for you.

don't forget all the engineering decision and new compromises you've end up doing for it to work. the resulting car can be a full new Pandora Box of opportunities to learn new mechanic skills... by the time you end the project with proper perfromance and reliability you may end being an engineer of your own car (or the people who you got to deal with all those problems your decissions created)...the more skilled the mechanic is (or he thinks him to be) the bigger the mistake made and the engineering challenge created... people capable of solving your new puzzle will not even work in the manufacturer R+D+i or design and engineering department. good look if you need support on your one man or one workshop Race Custom Builder Team... stopping or scraping a project (or a daily driver) is much more better skill than keeping banging head to the wall...

@@InternetListener You're making it sound like modding cars in general is a TERRIBLE idea when i know for a fact that the MAJORITY of cars can do quite well with humble to moderate upgrades! The KEY is to go to places that are comfortable and familiar with your car and the upgrade path. Use quality PROVEN parts that are MADE TO FIT your car specifically and you will eliminate 90% of your "OOPSIE i forgot to put that hose on" mistakes... And of course do NOT attempt to ad lib parts of the install you are not comfortable about or have no experience in...

I had the mk1 manual 225 in blue when it first came 😊it was a lot of fun . I have the vr6 mk2 manual currently and it’s been a blast 💥. They don’t make cars like this anymore 😢

Just wanted to say thanks to Charles for this series and the timing belt video. Long story short my Bora / Jetta mk4 now has a running s3 engine in it 😁 Was 3 years ago I tore out the agu 1.8t as it was very tired and I wanted to go for a dbw wideband setup but I’d left it all apart soooo long working through the bits and pieces putting it back together has been a mission. Pieces I’d bought ready to do it all and organising it all has been an epic battle. I can’t imagine recording it all like he’s done, I’d have hours of head scratching 😂

Needs a 225 exhaust as well . But it's a hell of a lot of cost and effort to go to when, if you really want to keep a particular car , you can just swap in a 225 engine and ECU etc. and be at 250 HP easy with a 1.1 bar map

The 1.8t PCV stuff at 18:15 had me reliving some old PTSD, Charles. You need to include trigger warnings next time! Also, 034 hoses + US Plastics Kynar check valves are the truth. Lasted about a decade on my old B6 USP sedan. Man, I miss that car sometimes...

Nice work as usual! I restored a 1982 Vanagon that had been sitting from 1991 until 2019. The gas was basically varnish and I decided to replace the entire fuel system.

Great video! I own a mk1 TT. Quite rare here in Australia these days. Ha you don’t need to take the bevel box it install the gearbox. It actually aids in putting the box on, as it’s perfect as a lever to angle the box straight when sliding in the input shaft. Ask me how I know😂 My first gear selector fork snapped one of those crappy rivets securing the fork. Ended up installing the latest generation laser welded 6 speed forks. Please keep the TT mk1 content coming.🙏🏻🇦🇺🤜🏼🤛🏼😎🍀🍀🍀

Home Depot Motorsports, I love it. Takes me back to my 1993 Probe GT that I bought new and had the dryer hose "ram air" intake on. It went down to the belly pan. And of course one dsay driving to work I went thru a flooded road. I got really lucky and didn't hydrolock the engine. Towed it home and pulled the plugs and then found that the air box had drained water on to the starter and killed it. New starter later I cranked it over and it shot water in 6 different directions. Plugs back in and she ran fine. Had 136k when I traded her in on a new 1998 Crown Vic.

Great vid! I did the clutch on my octavia 1.8t on gravel driveway. Nitemare to move anything and lying on it wasnt fun either:( Spent hours wrestling the bell housing around trying to get it slot back on. Finally gave up and hit the forums for advice as u do. "Remove passenger drives haft..." once I did that it went in in 5 mins. I felt like such a dope. Also snapped a flywheel bolt cus someone gave me wrong torque setting but my fault for trusting them. Drove grand no problems!! Loved that car

I just found my new upgrade for my MK4 power steering cooler line. Thanks! The MK4 one hugging the trans has nearly had me set fire to my car like 10x. I loved the MK3 way everything would just "flip out" while connected.

It's okay Charles, for sure was really frustrating working on the small tt but I bet it put a smile on your face when the little pepy car ran :D. I got a 3.2 mk1 tt to daily until i finish my vr5 turbo mk4. I wanted that vr6 feel since never really got to try anything besides my vr5. Then the 3.2 engine blew up and decided to replace it instead of parting ways. Ofc i did a bit of refreshing of the new engine and all that jazz and now it wants a new heater core before christmas haha.. but it is really a cool little car that grew on me for the past half to one year. Thank you for the great clip and all the information you gave me over the years for my much loved golf and tt now

Hey Charles, Aggelos here from Greece, next time you need to change the clutch master cylinder you can remove the clutch pedal assembly and change it when hold it on a vice. It's mutch easier. Works fine on mk4 and mk5. Your friend Aggelos

You should install the lower boost pipe back or make a support instead. That boost pipe is part of the fronts support structure. This is very entertaining to watch. Thank you.👌
