A new update to the Wandering Village adds the Ocean biome and also a new hostility system that allows the player to enable a variety of penalties to make their runs more challenging. Here is a playthrough on Veteran with all of the hostility modes active and surviving until making the Survivor's Monument (slightly delayed in making it due to the lack of iron). Once I get situated the run becomes pretty easy but early game requires several things quickly and if you get certain biomes early (or repeatedly) you will have a difficult if not impossible time.
The new biome is quite lovely and, while overall a biome I consider one of the easier ones to thrive in, has its own difficulties. The biggest problem is generating water as your air wells do function unlike the desert biome but work at lower production. You can gather seawater to evaporate into water but this requires glass that is unlikely to be obtained early barring some good RNG via scavenging. Beyond that, the challenge is that your Onbu can only rest at islands, so extended swimming may cause it to lose a good bit of health if its exhaustion hits 100% with a ways to go before land. Some islands can have poisonous plants, so while the biome normally has no toxicity this means you may have to have herbs and doctors ready (not to mention antidotes if your Onbu needs to sleep in this zone!).
The new hostility mode is a good bit of fun to add more customizable challenge to the game (I felt Veteran was a bit too easy when you get the hang of the game) though setting limits on hostility and requiring short runs (just survive 500km) to increase the limit seems unnecessary. You must complete a hostility run with 5 points, then 8 points, then 10 points, and finally 12 points before you can unlock a run using all 14 points.
The modes themselves run from being minor nuisances to greatly changing your playstyle. Morning Appetite adds 10% hunger every time your Onbu wakes up which requires you to quickly get a means of feeding it unless you get very lucky with feeding spots. Weak Immune System for 100% increased poison buildup makes jungles VERY dangerous for your Onbu until you can make antidotes. Ice Age changes what can grow in each biome entirely - without a heatwave, you cannot grow cacti or corn in the deserts so water is significantly harder to come by and the mountains are always freezing so herbs/mushrooms cannot be grown there. Low Wood has like 30-40% of the trees you'd normally get so a Scavenging Hut and Sawmill are almost essential to offset the less wood you have access to.
The others aren't as big a deal. Higher heartbeat rate just means more sleeping (and quicker hunger buildup), although it also means running to avoid a storm or spore cloud almost always tires out your Onbu. Defense Fog gives less scavenging options. 100% Toxic plant spread isn't an issue if you get people immediately removing them (which you should be doing anyhow). Berry Crisis is a bit weird - personally, I never cared much for berry bushes so having none available at the start meant little to me.
As before, you can play endlessly, and there are achievements for having a population of 200 and 500 people which requires many more hours of play past the current stopping point. The only additional danger beyond my stopping point are mosquito swarms in jungles that give the Onbu a fever (the weather changes to hot).

It is just so incredible Random. 1. Run > stuck forever in mountains until Onbu starved to Death 2. Run > stuck forever in Dessert until Onbu starved to Death while my People starved aswell...

Totally agree that there's a good bit of RNG on max hostility in that if you stay in any biome too long at the start the run will fail. Too much early jungle will usually kill Onbu from the super fast poison build up.

The fact that you didn't even build shelter until Day 9/10 is making me rethink things! I could save the wood in the beginning. If your villagers are okay with it on this difficulty setting, they'll definitely be okay on Novice with no modifiers! Good job getting the sawmill set up early too! I'm learning some new things to try on my next run! Thanks for the upload!

No problem and good luck on future runs! The only major problem with delaying shelter is that that the low production score can mean recruiting people via scavenging can get the message of "one person chooses to stay behind" but you're really rushed to get everything on this setting as Onbu hunger/poisoning build up very fast (I had some attempts lose to either too much jungle too early or just not being able to grow food in time, such as being stuck in the mountains for too long). Likewise, with Low Wood not getting a sawmill led to problems very fast that I'm not sure scavenging can save (but in normal runs those three knowledge points can always be used for other research).

And here's my villagers dying to starvation on the tutorial 😔

Once you get the hang of things you'll get better at staying alive. Berry gatherers can be useful as they require no water to function (but positioning them near enough bushes for higher efficiency is a pain). Getting enough water for farming is a pain early game, but if you know you'll go into a desert make sure to research cacti and corn to be able to produce water and food. Good luck!

@@CrankyTemplarI've not played a game like this in some time. So I got caught up in the tutorial and didn't think about what I was supposed to be doing, like watching my food supply. I've made it to just over a hundred days now, the game was fine until I ran into 3 poison spores in a row. Not fun at all. Then the damn thing has to sleep and we all get stuck for ages getting rid of the stupid spores on its back 😔

@@WhatBigClawsYouHave Shoot, that's bad luck. One tip about that is if the spore clouds aren't stationary (you can see the line it's moving in) you should be able to use a hornblower to have your Onbu run to speed through it before the cloud covers that spot or try and stagger sitting to wait for it to pass (if you order it to sit in the same spot too many times it'll start ignoring you). Good luck with your run if you continue from there or on your next one!

@@CrankyTemplar Haha thanks 😁 I did make him run, but most of the time the poison clouds were stationery on my path, litteraly 3 in a row. I never saw them coming, and half the time I was picking them off his back so I don't have time to check. I've given up on it for now, not my taste. Just not a good game for me unfortunately. Lost a ton of villagers to poison, so yeah I'm done with it.

@@WhatBigClawsYouHave Understandable, normally I don't get too much into strategy games myself but it seems when I do I get into them pretty hardcore. Best of luck with your next game!

No problem! I've been trying to write up some notes to do a guide but I'm really, really bad at following through at that. I've really only played prior to early access and then when E-mailed about the Ocean update so it may be a bit of a hiatus until they have more updates or add more hostility modes but I've greatly enjoyed my time with it.

There is one thing I will say about this run that I think isn't covered here in this playthrough: Early desert biome as the first biome change. Granted, I've gotten through it through early 4 research huts to unlock both cactus and corn, but then it affects the rest of the run. But, after researching cactus and corn, I probably should demolish 2 of the research huts after they served their purpose, now that I think about it. 22:52 The rage I feel from this is palpable. No wonder Onbus are nearly extinct, lol. Then again...maybe the Onbu was doing it out of concern for you?

With Ice Age you can't grow corn and cacti in the desert unless you get a heatwave which isn't guaranteed. You can survive a short time in the desert using what water you can stockpile before entering the desert and scavenging (assuming you're lucky to get an oasis or two) but early on it'll likely put you in a very rough spot. Although pretty much spending too much time in any biome (except the ocean) at the start on max hostility will kill your run. But yeah, Onbu ignoring food was rough but sometimes it works out anyhow. It can just make you nervous with max hostility as until you get food and poison under control you might max hunger or toxicity and not be able to handle the damage to Onbu.

@@CrankyTemplar I wasn't max difficulty yet, was working on my first new game plus. But, now that you've said that, I'm terrified. Here I thought Ice Age would be an indirect boon, making cactus and corn unnecessary, but you're saying you essentially won't be able to grow anything without having an emergency stockpile of water? OUCH. Glad I'm not at that difficulty yet.
@CrankyTemplar

Yeah, with Ice Age you'll be able to grow beets in the desert to start but water will be a huge issue. On max difficulty too much jungle will poison Onbu rapidly because of the 100% increased buildup, mountains keep you from growing herbs and mushrooms, and desert makes water very hard to get. Once you get settled you're fine (especially once you get a bakery rolling) but early game you really have to hope you switch biomes enough.

impressive. When I have ice age on onbu always starves or dies of poisoning. No herbs or shrooms in mountains is killer

Thanks! After some failed runs it seems you really need to get a good diversity of biomes with Ice Age or it's just going to end in disaster. I had an extended jungle too early on one run and Onbu's poisoning couldn't be kept under control. It's like only an extended ocean is really feasible for early game.
