Strawberry Queen Gacha's Brother, the usual tutor. David had been the teacher of all the lessons up until this one. I’m disappointed to see all the grammatical and punctuation errors in the comments. Perhaps David needed a break because he realized no one was paying attention. 😔

"We have to make sure it's lemon," is actually a complex sentence containing an independent clause and a dependent clause. The full sentence would state, "We have to make sure that it's lemon," but in this sentence the conjunction "that" is omitted. Regardless of the inclusion or exclusion of the conjunction "that", the sentence ends with a noun clause "(that) it's lemon." Khan Academy provides a great service, but this video is straight up wrong. Is there an updated/corrected version?

Raine Brookshire, no, there wouldn't be a comma because your first clause is independent and second is dependent. If the first clause in dependent and the second is independent then there is a comma in between. Hope it helps !

"When we buy his birthday cake." could work as an independant clause if it is the answer to a question, right? Like "Can you get Max some chips for the movie night at his party?" and as an answer "When we buy his birthday cake." Although that would probably be more correct with "I will do that when we buy..." Can someone correct me on that please?

try not to think of it as an answer to a question. If someone walked up to you and said "When we buy is birthday cake." you'd go "..what?". The subordinating conjunction 'when' means the rest of the sentence should answer the question when. What happens when you buy his birthday cake? You make sure it's lemon. "We bought his birthday cake." doesn't do this because there is no subordinating conjunction to tell you that the other part of the sentence will answer your question.

also "I will do that" is an independent clause, so [I will do that] -Independent [when we buy his birthday cake] -dependent. That means your clause "I will do that" is needed (independent) to make the sentence work. hope this helped :)
