Being a "fast composer" doesn't hinge solely on the ability to write music quickly. Although my speed of composing scores for film and TV has significantly improved over the years, it isn't just because I practice daily. Over the years I have built an arsenal of tools and systems which greatly enhance my efficiency. By integrating these tools and practices into my work, I've been able to take on more projects in less time and navigate through periods where multiple projects overlapped.
In this video, I'm going to share the tried-and-true methods that help me when scoring for films, TV shows, and video games. My hope is that by sharing them, they'll offer the same benefits to aspiring composers and professionals alike.

I am confident that most people here have the skills necessary for composing FAST, but the issue is that many do not secure enough gigs to make this ability truly worthwhile. This is what I believe we should be addressing.

I appreciate this comment. In my personal experience of working on composing teams and then having my own team when necessary, I have found a lot of composers struggle to score to picture as efficiently as may be necessary for large projects. Sometimes a single tv series can have 30-35 minutes of music that needs to be delivered in maybe 5 days and that makes cue turn around a very difficult task at the professional level. That said you are absolutely correct that securing gigs is an equally difficult task and I address that in other videos. however, I felt this video was important because many composers I know have secured gigs, but then struggled to deliver everything required due to the amount of music and turn around time required.

@@jonasfriedman Thank you for the detailed reply. It makes sense. Sometimes, I feel the need to highlight the darker aspects of the industry as a video game music composer. Thanks for making this video, it's very helpful! As a Logic user, I just wanted to throw in that you can export stems very easily by selecting the tracks you want to export and pressing cmd + E. The selected tracks can be instrument, busses, stems, submixes, or any combination. Thanks again!

GAME CHANGER!!!!! Especially those Cubase tips like the exporting stems feature ... I've been trying to figure out how to do that ... I'm still working on some fine-tuning for my buses/stems like Low Strings, Hi Strings etc. Once thats done, I should be all set.

Well i found your KZfaq today, wich is unfortunate that your Chanel existed for some time and i just found out about it.! I'm just starting to write and produce music. Thank you so much for your guidance. You’re easy to understand and very informative. It looks like you have an NKS keyboard controller with all those lights on it. I was thinking of getting one for my iMac computer, I imagine you could do your expression and dynamics with that keyboard. I use this same trick. It probably only saves a second more and can change the sound quality (often doesn't matter), but I also bounced many of my samples so the audio file is a certain number of bars at a certain tempo, and I put that tempo in the file name. Then you can drag the audio into cubase in musical mode and get hit points (like the apex of a cym scrape or end of a reverse sound) to line up exactly without having to zoom in.

Running into issues with CPU overload on one computer, going to move into VS Pro, and add a second machine....

Can you go into detail about your toolkit folder? I'm fascinated by the idea. Which samples make it into the folders? Do all the samples that you download from a sample pack get organized into those folders, or do they stay in the folder structure they're sold in? Very grateful for your videos. Thank you!

Good question @PGAudioworks - so I have my personal folder called JF sounds and it’s just for my most used individual sounds that I’ve made OR that other companies / people have made by I pull from them the most often. Then on my main sample drive I have folders for all my sample libraries including sample pack creators and their organized by company and then by purchase - so those are exactly as downloaded l. My JF sounds folder is where I put things into my own organization system and again it’s only for the most frequently used stuff so I don’t want time looking for jt

Great video! I’ve been looking for more live string samples for sound design and I noticed you had a folder of them. May I ask where you get yours from?

Totally - so I use 8dio's cage libraries and dark shadows, as well as Project Sams Symphobia libraries (specifically their cluster and fx patches). In those libraries every note on the keyboard plays a different string effect or cluster. I record them all into wav files and have organized them in my toolkit (different folders for glissando, tremelo, aleatoric fx and so on). They so much easier to use as wav files AND as wav files I find them much easier to manipulate for sound design.

Hey @danmoras5952 - great question. Yes this template is about a decade in the making and has gone through tons of tweaks and upgrades over the years. I am in the process of creating different segments for Modern Media Composer and one of them will offer this and other templates as an add on for those who are interested. Look for updates from the MMC newsletter (link in video description) as I hope to have something available in the late fall.

@@jonasfriedman I suppose if it's underscore you can compose more length with greater ease. 6 mins of big "main title" type work a day seems impossible lol. not sure the actual verbiage to use.

Yes - you’re correct … also HUGE action scenes, like title music, would make 6 minutes a day of finished work not impossible but it would take a pretty special person to pull that off. In the case of the tv shows I’m referring too most of the score is underscore - with action cues sprinkled in and if lucky on an episode little to no action

I've watched a few of your videos and you certainly have a lot of experience and knowledge. But that side on camera angle is pointless and annoying. Please take it from a professional videographer, looking straight at the lens is always preferable for the viewer. It would be a lot more effective if you turned face-on to the second camera and cut away to it occasionally.

I appreciate your opinion. I’ve had many compliments on the production quality of my videos and imagine the B-Cam is part of that. That said I plan to experiment with the setup in the future as I’ve found lighting lenses and all things video fun in the same way music can be
