I saw him at the Holkywood Bowl a few years ago. We gave him 5 standing ovations! 5! You could hear a pin drop at the quietest sections. We only stopped cheering and making him perform because he very sweetly told us "It's late and and I'm tired and have to go home now." 🥺😭❤️ The man is a living legend and is still incredibly humble.

How John Williams reflects on working with Steven Spielberg? You should ask Steven Spielberg how it feels to work with John Williams, this guy is awesome. Look at the scores he's done. Star Wars theme/score, Indiana Jones theme/score, Jaws theme/score, Jurassic Park them/score, JFK, Superman, Saving Private Ryan, Home Alone, Hook, 7 Years In Tibet, Schindler's List, Harry Potter, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, etc. For starters HE WROTE THE STAR WARS THEME!

He just doesn't get the award each time because no other composer could ever truly win as long as this man is alive. He IS the best. Everybody in the film music composing business agrees on that. There is no real competition. And people who voted know that. A nomination is obligatory when he does a score. And if it was only truly about who's best, he would have won almost every time.

Looks like we are hearing a very calm and serene 30 years old person. Images can talk to our being but music can talk to our souls, this is why his work took us to places more deeply than the films would be able to do it, just by themselves. Thank you for the wonderful ride sir

I don’t know if John is the greatest living composer, but he’s definitely top five. I love the story of when Steven asked John to score Schindler’s List. John said, “This is your masterpiece. It’s glorious, you need a much better composer than me to score it.” And Steven said, “Well yes, but they’re all dead.” 😂

53 Oscar nominations isn't unreal, the fact he "only" won 5 is. There were many years that the winning score was far inferior to John Williams' nomination. One example that comes to mind is 'Joker' (winner) vs 'Star Wars The Rise of Skywalker' (the last of an epic series of 9 musical masterpieces) in 2020. It almost seems that voters wanted to recognize Williams' genius by nominating him every year (to be fair, in my mind he was nominated a couple of times for less than impressive scores too), but somehow they felt like he had 'won' enough so they didn't give him the deserved Oscar. For a long time every Academy member could vote in every category, which made people vote in categories they have no expertise in. But since that has changed, the voters consist of a new breed of composers who lean more toward the Hans Zimmer style of score (music that may complement the movie but is largely void of melody when listening to it separate from the movie), like my example 'Joker'. So many examples of winners from last couple of years support my theory: Dunkirk (that score even made the movie unwatchable for me), Gravity, The Hateful Eight (fellow genius Morricone's only Oscar but his worst score ever), Atonement, Babel...

@@flashgamer1275 you can delete the "maybe" and say "definitely" on Hook, one of his best scores. Add to that list 'The witches of Eastwick', 'Superman', 'Raiders of the lost ark', 'The Patriot', 'Far and away' and 'Empire of the sun' and we'll be almost there I guess.

Academy Awards are recognition by ones peers in Hollywood music. That's the catch. There may be hundreds of people making music as composers, musicians and sound people, but how many actually are able to nominate and vote on the nominees? Less than a hundred? Like what was it about a flop like _Angela's Ashes,_ that earned him a nomination, but a successful movie, _The Phantom Menace,_ which score I thought fantastic, did not? There seems to be a promotional or advertising aspect to nominations, so maybe John Williams or the producers didn't take out advertisements in the trades. It's said some voting is based on the idea of "he/she is due" even if the specific performance or composition isn't so great compared to previous efforts. And then there are people who vote in a category that don't watch all the movies in that category, or even the one they voted for! Animation is being exposed where Academy members vote for what their grandchildren saw and liked; not bothering with "Japanese junk."
