It's interesting that you note that the vocalist, Dennis Rondum, was lining up with the snare rather than the melodic instruments and how that was something you haven't heard before. The vocalist is also the drummer and if you listen to a lot of Spawn of Possession's first album where he did vocals and drums as well you will notice something similar (example: Church of Deviance).
@CriticalReactions4 жыл бұрын
Very cool information. It isn't very typical to hear about vocalists being drummers and you can definitely hear how that experience melds into his singing technique.
@slaughtered7773 жыл бұрын
Dennis also SOLELY composed 'Sour Flow' (instead of Jonas Bryssling, the guitarist who is otherwise the sole composer) from Noctambulant, which is an absolute masterpiece and just generally an incredible achievement!!! There is nothing remotely close to Spawn, love them to absolute bits.
@bloodaxis2 жыл бұрын
Röndum didn't do the drums on Incurso but his experience with the drums probably led to that anyway. For reference it was Henrik Schönström.
@person12272 жыл бұрын
@@bloodaxis ah you're totally right, my bad. I'm not sure why I thought Rodnum did drums on this album. I have a vague memory that he was going to originally and then something came up and he wasn't able to but I can't quite remember.

The shift in the sound with the solo imo is because the solos on this album were written remotely by a player named Christian Muenzner (who is a really popular player in the sub-genre, hes played in Necrophagist, Obscura, etc). So I assume they sent him material and he wrote the solos based on it, and his choice/direction when playing/writing solos is usually phenomenal in tech death. That’s actually one the best things about his playing; namely his solos make songs *better*. But on this album, not being with the guys and writing with them, not hearing perhaps all of the finished arrangements (my guess), or whatever it was as I’m only guessing, led to solos that not only didn’t sound right in tone with the songs, but in most cases just didn’t sound right for the song at all (which is shocking coming from him). Something tells me that he had very limited material or time to work with. Oddly there is one song, the first song, where he plays a solo like he always does, aka its frigging amazing and makes the song 10x better. It also oddly sounds far better in tone and volume, etc etc, like normal. That was the “single” type song for the album when they announced it after years of being dormant. I think he rushed it (or was rushed), or didn’t have enough time or material to work with, because it just doesn’t sound right on most songs and that’s the opposite of his playing. On many songs on this album the solo is the worst part and that hurts to say.

Spawn of Possession were always among THE techiest of tech death bands. Incurso was my favorite album from them because it finally introduced more melody and atmosphere, and this track is a perfect example of that. I haven't listened to them in ages, though. You'll probably get used to death growls. I hated them when I first heard them as a teenager, but because there were so many great, interesting bands using them I kept listening and over time they grew on me and now I enjoy them, especially when done well. I think it just requires a brain switch to listen to vocals similarly to how you would a distorted rhythm guitar as opposed to an emotive vehicle for lyrics.

I'm seriously torn. 😥
@JM-ll6hd4 жыл бұрын
@@fatbat9031 I think conductors departure refined what they did on under a stone... The counterpoint on that album is insane. Pan to left or right then listen to the song with the opposite pan and its so different.
@fatbat90314 жыл бұрын
I have actually done that before...unintentionally 😄. I do agree with you though. While "Under A Stone..." is my preference, that's only due to my history with the album. Conductor's Departure does indeed have a lot more melodic ideas, especially the counterpoint, it's delicious. I guess Brian would probably prefer "Conductor's Departure", or at the very least have a whole lot more to say about it. So maybe something off that album would be more suitable. I still love "Under A Stone..." though 😉
