These guys pretty much showed where black metal should be in the 21st century, songwriting, concept and musicianship-wise. They inspired swaths of bands to create more ambitious bm, rather than replicating the same old story from almost 40 years now, but none, in my opinion, came to the perfection with which they married over-the-top technicality & progressiveness, assaulting dark atmosphere and just... great fucking riffs!
@ole862 жыл бұрын
Paracletus one of my fav BM albums of the last decade despite all the political controversy. But is it really that influential? DSO's sound is still kinda unique and unmatched. MGLA's Exercises in Futility which is my pick for the best BM album of the decade is what i would call influential.

@@ole86 mgła did influence alot of hands but i think dso created the dissonance black metal sound
@user-xd9et8wf4e2 жыл бұрын
Couldn't agree more, nothing comes close. I think part of black metal is it has to be believable, the moment it feels phony and like the same old story, it loses the touch. Dso's darkness is absolutely "believable" and never relents
@@ole86 remember, sometimes bands who never got that big of an audience nevertheless influenced many bands who got more fans.

Deathspell Omega likes to use for the emotinal climax of their pieces, and they're often the emotional core of the entire work. You can see it in this song - the most melodic and pleasant, even somewhat sentimental part of the song is the endling. I always find their melodies just stunningly beautiful, and the way they emerge from the utter chaos of the meat of their tracks is awe-inspiring to me. If you want to hear more all-around melodic wrighting from them, you should check out the "Dought" EP. It features longer and more prominent melodic passages, and is generelly a bit easier on the ears. They also bring out some metalcore/math rock influences on this one, which is just wonderful. The track "Fires of Frustration" from their last album is also very melodically-driven, despite being arguably even more daunting than Abscission. Anyway, happy to see you enjoyed them! Hoping to see more on the channel.

It’s rare how there are bands who diverge from the “tradition” but DSO not only diverges but they reinvent the wheel while maintaining the spirit of black metal. In fact, they inspired me to pursue philosophy and while I have my BA, I still have trouble wrapping my head around their lyrics.

100% agree with what Dimiko said. On my "Top 100 Artists" list I basically said that, to me, DsO and Ulcerate owned metal in the 2010s, being the two bands that were genuinely pushing their respective genres forward into something new and different. I love both because they're among the few new-ish metal bands I put on and go "I have no idea what's going on here," and it's extremely rare that any metal bands can evoke that reaction to me, and it's a sign that I'm in the presence of something special. This is a fine introductory track, being perhaps the most concise song off arguably their greatest LP (Paracletus... though some would argue Fas - Ite, Maledicti, In Ignem Aeternum is better). They also have several EPs (including Kenose and Veritas Diaboli Manet in Aeternum: Chaining the Katechon) that are as phenomenal as their LPs. This is a truly special band, though definitely not an easy listen for anyone not already familiar with (or a fan of) the genre, the very definition of "an acquired taste."

Finally , thanks for it. Deathspell omega created the ultimate black metal if you ask me. If you think about that , there is no second band that created their own philosophy and write that complicated lyrics in probably all rock and metal music. And musically speaking, Ulcerate and Deathspell Omega is the top of atonal music for me. (Beside of the classical composers)

Can't disagree with you more on the bass. It sounds like you're dragging the vibrating corpse of a fallen diety on a cobblestone floor. It's insane the sound they managed to create and it compliments the overall soundscape perfectly, it's like a constantly shifting thick carpet that the rest of the song is sitting on. As much as the drumming is directing the tempo of the song and its sense of pacing and movement, the bass is its foundation of everything tonal upon which the beautiful guitar work is then weaved. I haven't watched your other videos so I'd like to clarify some misconceptions about genres since you seem to be rather new to this. A typical black metal vocalist with go with a high-pitched shriek, you'll find some variety but generally black metal vocals are not described as "growls", that's a death metal thing. The vocalist for DsO is entirely one of a kind and you won't find anything similar in the history of metal. The music itself is equally unique, although countless vapid copycats have been spawned by DsO's success, and they do owe some credit to their influences, which include some non metal but also metal bands like ved buens ende and voivod, their approach to the genre is completely unique and doesn't even have to be categorized as black metal anymore, even though in some ways it represents an evolution of short, or rather a finalization of many aspects of the genre. But what really sets DsO apart is their authenticity and ingenuinity which will never be matched in this very particular musical domain.

*Deathspell Omega* is the greatest band ever existed and of course they are The Titan of Black Metal ... What do you expect from a band? Out-of-this-world song-writing and musicianship, phenomenal performances of musical instruments (drum, bass, guitar) and vocals; deep and complex lyrical contents about various philosophical, metaphysical and theological aspects of human existence that force you to really think and learn much much more and think again. I challenge people to name just one other band in the entire music history that matches this level of intellect and excellence. This is not just some random cringe statement and I understand that music is subjective but there is certainly a meaningful question to ask for the comparison between Richard Wagner and some random pop star when it comes to music; I am really looking for some names that match with the towering place of DSO in music not just Black Metal ... There is nothing in Black Metal (or even metal) that can beat what is achieved in The Trilogy. Of course their approach toward Orthodox Satanism might not be everyone's cup of tea. But for me, this is the only reason Black Metal exists. If Black Metal is not about Satan, understood broadly and transcendentally not as a creature with horns or craps like that, and the concept of Evil and its central place in our human life, it is not Black Metal anyway no matter how much the music is extreme or infernal or second-wavysh. Apparently, this is not the way most of the people want Black Metal to be; they want it to be just plain and simple with some harsh vocals, lyrics about fantasy worlds, and cringe meaningless "Hail Satan" slogan, in other words, a genre among others. Black Metal must be complex, difficult and troublesome, without which it is just a music as any other genres, and the paragon example of this type of Black Metal is Deathspell Omega. I can write and talk about them for hours and days and months without being bored but a comment section is not the place. Thanks for the great analysis of this out-of-this-world mastercraft of Deathspell Omega ... I would suggest Shrine of Mad Laughter or A Chore for the Lost for another analysis of Deathspell Omega music.

The fact that you have to come here and ask people to do research proves my point. If you listen to DsO in isolation (which is exactly how they present themselves, btw) there's none of this crap.
