Also that's great to see you pointed out the circus riff, fun fact for some Dillinger fans too, they actually do that riff a total of 5 (that I know of) times throughout their Discog. Their very first song ever on the LP had it and their first song on their last album had it with a few songs in between. Cool little trope they stuck with haha.

Vote HIGHLY seconded. One of their songs where the controlled conditions of the studio brought out the very integral nuances and intricacy that they are capable of in a technical and melodic sense. I've never been big on live recordings, but this is especially one of those dillinger songs that loses alot in the live energy they are known for

Nice this is one of my favorite DEP songs! I think you'd be really surprised by how much softer music they have put out. One of Us is the Killer, Unretrofied, and Parasitic Twins are basically straight rock songs. Greg Puciato is, in my view, one of the best all around vocalists. His singing voice is actually beautiful!

One of my favourite songs of theirs. They do have a couple of songs that are slower and more melodic like this one, and they always nail it, making a more conventional, catchy song that still sounds interesting and breaks with conventions. From their 2nd album onward they seem to sprinkle a handful of tracks like these on each of their albums, and they're always highlights for me. That is not to say I dislike their fast chaotic stuff, but in between the more conventional songs they often feel almost like palette cleansers. They disorient you, basically blast your head clean off, and then when a song like this one comes along, it feels even more satisfying to get something easier to grasp to hold on to. In that way, I guess tracks like these helped me appreciate their chaotic sound a lot more. Some recommendations if you want more songs like that, "Setting Fire To Sleeping Giants", "Unretrofied", "Black Bubblegum", "Milk Lizard", "Chinese Whispers", "Parasitic Twins", "One of Us is the Killer", "Nothing's Funny", "Symptoms of Terminal Illness", "Nothing to Forget"

I would say DEP have 2 types of songs, they have their classic style very chaotic, fast paced, straight up math-core songs (like 43% Burnt and 70% of their catalogue) and they have those special songs, that sound like prog rock with many other influences, these songs are usually longer, with some pretty epic chorus just like the song you've witnessed. Other songs of this kind are: Unretrofied, Black Bubblegum, Milk Lizard, Dead as History, Mouth of Ghosts, One of Us is the Killer, Nothing's Funny (i'm forgetting some others).

Absolutely love this song! While this live version is sick, the studio version is much clearer so listening to that one might help you digest it better. This song is exactly why TDEP is still the best mathcore band ever. They can go crazy with songs like 43% Burnt or Sunshine the Werewolf, but they can also write great hooks in songs like this. As the albums progressed they also got much better at blending chaos and catchy hooks into single songs instead of having cleaner and heavier songs. Moments like these are what make it possible to listen to an entire 40 min album of theirs without going crazy. Everyone knows them for their insanity, but these guys are so much more than that.

Totally agree. I'm not into the last two albums, but this is the best comparing to the previous ones, because blends their sound in songs that are complete. For example in Ire Works there are catchy and softer songs, or brutal songs, but these element doesn't blends together. So some songs seem to belong to different bands.
@mickjager
@mickjager 2 жыл бұрын
@@HateMich I still really like the last 2 albums, but that might also be because I got introduced to them through Prancer. However, I completely agree with what your saying. This album runs much smoother than Ire Works and Miss Machine did with them alternating heavier and songs. Still love the earlier albums, but if it wasn't for these later albums I don't think I would've been able to pull through and get used to their chaotic nature.

I'm gonna be frank with you, I'm a Calculating Infinity and Mullet Burden guy, but I do also like some songs in Ire Works. What do you think of Jim Fear? That's one of the songs I was introduced to, and it's one of my favorites.
@mickjager
@mickjager 2 жыл бұрын
@@mythosspecialist1352 I love Jim Fear, but personally The Running Board is my fave from Calculating Infinity. I really like the album as you can really here many aspects the band would later expand upon, but in my opinion their later albums are more interesting as they're more diverse and cohesive. Sure, they sacrificed a bit on the raw agression their first album had, but I personally don't really miss it all that much. However different strokes for different folks.

I would recommend a mathcore/sludge metal/noise rock band called "Today Is the Day" and their song "Black Dahlia", (If you want something weirder and more varied, check out their song "Death Requiem".) Dillinger Escape Plan has cited then as a major influence as well as converge, They also had the drummer and guitarist of mastodon in the band on their 1999 album. vocalist/guitarist Steve Austin (The only consistent member of the band which is fraught with lineup changes on almost every album) is known for his pretty experimental work that is often disturbing, covering topics of mental illness, drug abuse, other forms of abuse and violence, and all around a lot of pretty messed up stuff and the music sonically reflects that pretty well. You may not like it because the man loves his dissonance but I think it would be really interesting to hear your take on the ideas at play in his music and its connection to bands like Dillinger and Converge.
@BlueCrayon77

They first used that cheeky circus riff on their 1998 track "The Mullet Burden" (Under the Running Board EP which was just before Calculating Infinity was released). This track doesn't have it usually, nor does it have some of the guitar soloing that this live version has.
@person1227

Just thought I'd mention that the "stereotypical circus theme" does have a name. It's from the piece "Entry of the Gladiators" by Julius Fučík. It really does show up in a lot of weird places in metal, this is not the first time I've heard it, and I am not at all surprised that DEP decided to throw it into a guitar solo. For example, the ending to Universal Mind by Liquid Tension Experiment.

I think I've said my piece on DEP many times before: lots of admiration for their talent and originality, but I struggle to enjoy them. It's actually their songs like this that I find myself enjoying more, where they mix their off-the-wall, kinetic, chaotic, mathy riffing and energy with more hooky and groovy sections. This is probably what I'd call their "middle" period. Their first album was all mathcore chaos. Their second had a few nods towards more mainstream styles, but not much. With their third album (Ire Works) they had their first genuine quasi-pop song in Milk Lizard. Option Paralysis was the album after Ire Works, and they released two more albums after that. As for how common these more mainstream-friendly works are in DEP... I'd say not terribly uncommon, but probably in the minority in the context of their work. Maybe 20-30% of their songs are like this? Rough guess there. Another good word for the "opposite of verbose" is laconic.

Here is an interview excerpt with the vocalist about the lyrics (from an annotation on Genius): “Gold Teeth on a Bum is about people having their priorities in the wrong places. People think it’s a joke title but it’s actually a very literal title for a lot of the meanings. I live in LA now and I’ve never seen such superficial people in my life that have their priorities all wrong, people who can’t feed their kids driving around in Lexus' or bums asking for change with gold teeth and that literally happened to me some bum came up to me with a mouth full of legitimate gold teeth asking me for money. It was just weird to me this guy’s asking for money but he’s got thousands of dollars worth of teeth in his mouth… All this ‘stuff’ is creating this very style over substance atmosphere in everything. LA had to do with a lot of my observations on those topics because that place is just a fucking cesspool of superficiality in a lot of ways man.”

What makes TDEP such an amazing band isn't just their creativity or technical prowess, but also their stylistic range. They're masters of their craft, all of them, and can perform exceptionally in a wide range of styles and of varying intensity. Personally I find their heavier stuff to be more interesting and engaging (Especially Calculating Infinity, everything else sounds boring for awhile after I listen through that record), but I love basically everything they've ever done. I will say though, that they are an acquired taste for most people (especially their heavier stuff), but are hugely rewarding if you give the music a chance to really sink in and gain some familiarity with their extremity.

2 of my other favorites from One of Us is the Killer would be "Nothing's Funny" and "Paranoia Shields." Not their most chaotic but not their most mellow either, they're just very well balanced and dare I say catchy songs that do a good job showing a more palatable side of Dillinger's sound for newcomers. That album in general pretty much made me a DEP convert, at first it was a little dicey but before long I got to a point where I just couldn't stop listening to it over and over again. And since then I've had the same experience with most of their other albums too, especially the ones with Greg.

Gotta say this live recording does not do this song justice, sounds so much better on the album. If you want more melodic/groovy Dillinger rather than their usual style, Milk Lizard or One of Us is the Killer are two awesome ones from them. The album this one comes off of Option Paralysis is an absolutely incredible album in general as well. Also, haven't dropped this request in a hot minute, because blowing up youtubers with requests makes me feel needy and annoying, but I still think you need to check out Black Crown Initiate eventually, one of the best modern prog bands today, if you want to see why they exploded almost overnight you have to listen to their EP Song of the Crippled Bull, one 20 min song split into 4 parts. Though if thats a bit much because of copyright or what have you, some really good standalone songs are Belie The Machine, or Trauma Bonds.

Yeah, as a rule it's probably better to stick to studio versions for first time reactions unless someone specifically recommends a live version. The circus bit thrown in at the end here was fun and there were some cool drum fills n stuff here and there but for the most part the studio one sounds better imo. That said Dillinger were a notoriously insane live band so I guess it doesn't hurt to showcase that a bit as well, just maybe better examples of that elsewhere.
