I live in New Zealand and have 3 worm farms outside. Just a tip, if you have many fruit fly type bugs in your compost try adding at least 70% paper to it. This could be shredded paper or tissues or even old envelopes from your post!!! Worms love paper and returns your compost back to a happy balance. Another tip is spent coffee groups. The whole compost speeds with the addition!!!

If you would tell when I was a teenager, that I would be totally excited about composting video, I would definitely tell you you're crazy. But here we are, around 10 years later and I am excited. I'm having a worm compost as well, I'm living in Germany and bought mine from an Austrian company. The first time I started it (December 2018) I failed in managing a mini ecosystem in my home, and I felt so sorry for my little worms dying, although I tried everything. So thank you for the advice with the onions, maybe the environment was too acidic. Some month ago I started over and until now my little friends are doing a great job

I thought my compost wasn’t working but my dad showed me this morning and it honestly made me day!!

I compost in a dual-bucket system on my balcony (two cat litter pails nested together with holes drilled in different places to allow in air). I've been doing it for a few years now and I don't have any worms in it. In the winter when it gets cold enough that the breakdown stops, I just leave it outside. I keep adding to the bucket until it's full and it will just sit there frozen, lol. Once the bucket is full, I store my kitchen scraps in the freezer so they don't get gross, and my "browns" (houseplant pruning, wooden matches, etc.) in some container or another just out and since they're not food it's fine. Then in the spring when it thaws I stir up the compost and wait for it to finish that batch before I start a new batch with the stuff I had hoarded over the winter inside. XD In the buckets, the inner bucket has some holes near the bottom so liquid can drain out and I literally just today collected a bunch of compost tea from the bottom. In previous years I never had any, it was too dry, but this last batch was way wetter than usual and I finally thought to check and see if I had any tea in the bottom, and watered my houseplants with it. :D Usually during the active season I refill the bucket to the top repeatedly and it shrinks as it breaks down so all told I probably deposit five pails worth of fresh material and get ~2/3 pail of finished compost in the end. TMI alert: weird things you can put in compost, since you mentioned hair and nail clippings, yeah, clean out your brush or your pet's brush into there too, used tissues can go in, washer and dryer lint if all the clothes that were washed were natural fibers, pencil shavings, matchsticks and incense sticks and ash after it's been burned, and as far as animal products go, eggshells - eggshells are great in compost. I crush them with a mortar and pestle first generally, some people grind them into powder in a blender. :)

In London, apartments aren’t allowed to get a food waste bin, you have to have a house to be eligible to get one that is collected by the bin trucks. I only realised this once I had moved house and it annoyed me so much! But I’m so glad I found this video because now I can start a compost box on my balcony 🤗🤗🤗 thanks for this!

So helpful! I want to start my own compost but I still live with my parents and they dont let me have one. What I do is I hide my compost in the freezer and drop it at a communal compost whenever I can 😈

Watched the whole video and thought this is so Important!!I needed the video because it has so many details on "how to" compost pretty much everything that is used in my house.. even hair.

My bf and I have a composting box that's like 4feet by 4feet outside. It just sits on top of the grass without a bottom and we just continuously add scraps and plant waste to it. I always think that we're going to finally run out of room in the compost- but nope! Somehow it always composts just fast enough to stop it from ever reaching the top. And then whenever we want to take the fresh soil, there's a little door at the bottom where you can shovel it out. It really is like magic. We will likely move to the city one day soon, but even so we still want a compost bin. Like just the fact that having a compost bin means our trash never smells and we have to take it out less often SO nice and very convenient.

We started composting for our garden recently and it's been so rewarding! I also love how each week our trash bin is more and more empty on trash day ^_^

There’s also bokashi composting where you sprinkle some inoculated bran on top of your food scraps to help it ferment. It should have whitish mold fuzz on top after a couple of weeks and what you do is bury it in your garden soil to fertilize it. Your food scraps must be pressed down and have as little air as possible. And you actually wanna make sure it does not get a lot of O2 in there since it’s a fermentation/anaerobic process. I use both traditional and bokashi methods of composting in my apartment since I am not about to pay for bags of compost

My ex have also bio waste in Finland, but he wanted to to make some nutritious soil for his pants. :) He used to have compost outside in open balcony (Helsinki, Finland). It did stayed warm (warm to hand => temperature over 40 °C also at winter months) and fully working also at winter, since composting creates energy - and we did have minus degrees at winter for some weeks. So if the compost is fully working, big enough and closed enough (but still getting oxygen), it can work well year around. Would not probably work in more cold environment as easily.

Greetings, I'm new to the small apartment composting scene, and I was wondering: if air is an important factor for composting, how do you do that inside a airtight container? If you put holes in the container wont the smell and mold escape from the box? Loving these videos!

I tried composting some kitchen waste recently on the vacant flower pot and the soil turned out so good now. It didnt has any worm in it initially and I put them out at the balcony.Now that the composting process is over I planted my plants on it directly and I saw a big worm friend in it recently although I have no idea how it get in there because I am very sure it dont have any worm in it initially😂my plants are doing great too

Another good way to have smell-free worm compost is to have a lot of dry fiberous content that you hide the scraps in (shredded leaves, grass, shredded newspaper or paper - this is what I do with all of my paper!) I have never heard of it being a good thing to seal compost b/c it needs air to rot, but I guess your box isn't hermetically sealed. If it's working for you that's awesome!

I've heard that for worm composting adding some kind of grit is recommended. Like powdered egg shell or crushed oyster shell. Since the worms don't actually have teeth the grit helps them to digest. There's also a lot of different worm composting species. Red wrigglers are popular in countries like the US for being very versatile and forgiving of temperature changes. The African Night crawler which is a favorite composter in the Philippines is the fastest and most voracious eater. But need a warmer climate.

I can't wait to start this in my own place! I have been practicing eco-friendly techniques for years and would love to follow in your foot steps and my Auntie Sonya's. Take care!

Zero waste question - when clothes become unusable, you can turn them into rags, but what do you do with rags when they become unusable? Also, what do you do with clothes that aren't usable any more but also wouldn't make good rags?

Composting in winter is possibly if you have a a large outdoor compost. It takes a few years to get there but the energy that is created is enough to keep a large composting pile from completely freezing.

And also very fun to watch this! My son came home from school a couple of weeks ago where they had talked about composting. We was so excited to get one. With worms!!! Very important!!! But I didn’t thought you could have one inside. Now we’ll definitely try and he will be so happy!

I do composting by starting them in a terracotta pot which helps them get the air circulated. I just keep a lid on top of the pot, not tightly closing it to avoid any flies coming in.

I live with my family in the countryside of Poland. We have two big wooden bins for compost. We have recently found a family of hedgehogs living there, they must have been atracted by all the food scraps.

Compost everything from your kitchen except for fat and grease in one bin, feed semi-finished compost to the worms in another bin. I lasagna fresh waste in one end of the compost bin with shredded cardboard and newsprint and take from the other end to feed the worms, same thing for the worm bin, fresh food in one end, castings out the other. Both bins covered with landscape fabric only, to allow ventilation but keep bugs out, side by side in my basement, completely odorless. I roast bones and grind them and eggshells to add directly to the worm bin along with neem seed meal and rock dust. I don't use bedding in the worm bin, all the browns go into the compost, by the time it gets to the worms the ph and temperature is balanced and it's ready to eat.

So I see a lot in how to compost, and maybe its obvious, but how do you use the compost? Like it's for plants and stuff right? Do you just put it ontop of the soil, do you mix it? Can you use it for already potted plants or is it for repotting? Can you use it for plants intended for consuming?

Composting is actually a lease violation, fortunately, I live on the edge of the woods so the peels, seeds, cores, etc go in the woods and the coffee grounds get dried and put in a mason jar to be added to the soil when I winterize the garden bed. I miss my big compost bin, but at least I still don't have to contribute food to the waste stream.

I got off to a bad start... I only added veg/fruit waste and egg shells to a bin and now it's a moldy mess. Do I have to throw it out? Any advice on where to learn ratios and such? If I just throw paper and soil in will it work itself out? Anything helps, thanks!

My mother in law tries to “compost” in our townhouse, but she just throws garbage and spoiled food on top of the soil in our indoor decorative planters. We have so many flies now. And if you tell her she’s doing it wrong, she pretends to not understand English but still acts offended and then gets my wife angry at me. Fml.

Great video-was thinking about indor composting for a while-we do have special food waste collection bins where i live but they are not emptied regularly enough for all my waste to go into them. One question-what do you do with the soil once your bin is full?

When composting paper/cardboard/textiles be aware that they often are treated with chemicals (bleaches/inks/adhesives etc.) that you may not want to be in your compost. Compostable plastic bags have a sign on the bottom which tells you if it can be composted at home or it needs to be composted in an industrial environment. Also you can use eggshells in your compost.

To reduce the smell (apparently - I'm in research mode, not trying-it-out mode yet) you need to put way more carbon rich waste than nitrogen-rich waste. That seems to include coffee grounds, paper, card, sawdust etc. Some people describe it as brown vs green waste but it's a bit misleading in some cases. Seems to be what you're doing, hence the minimal smell. (edit - should have read further. Other commenters beat me to it :)

Soapy water will help with the plant bugs. Composting what kind of worms does it have to be? Also with a worm far does it need to be tossed since normal compost aerobic
