Nice video. Just to add two following things which might be helpful 1. Cutting green waste by scissor or crushing by hand can speed up composting process. By breaking waste, microorganism gets higher surface area. 2. Adding some compost from last batch of home compost also helps a bit to process fast

I have used a plastic paint bucket as a compost bin . It works well for me and it also upcycles old buckets . I made a few holes on the bottom and put it on my backyard because the water comes out and makes the soil fertile . I would say that plastic bins are also a good choice to start with

I first dry my organic matter for a few days in sun, it reduces the volume greatly (no smell, no insects) Then I break it into small pieces (dried waste breaks easily). Then I keep it in a pot covering it with some moist soil. I keep on adding dried waste weekly. It produces no smell and only takes about a month to decompose.
@shyamsundar40693 жыл бұрын
It is a good method to compost organic waste but when we allow the food to decompose in soil completely, the microorganisms gets plenty of food. Hence more wet food, the more microorganisms thrive to eat the same. Hence your compost would become more rich if you add wet waste directly. But either way works !

After months of hesitation and seeing this video on loop, I have finally started composting! Wish me luck Edit: So I started composting in lockdown so I had niether a surahi or khamba. I simply used a big sized gamla. Covered it's top with a make-do utensil. Added all my kitchen waste, except dairy stuff. Thankfully I had access to lots of dry leaves. One additional step I did was add jaggery water, just added some jaggery to warm water and poured it in compost bin. It took me 40days to see my compost bin turn from kitchen waste to black mixture. I had lots of maggots and worms in the bin, but no harm done. They kept to the gamla and didn't venture out. I have added the compost to my plants and all residue with worm and maggots are back to my compost gamla to be used for second round. I am so thankful to Ekta to teach this very basic but important aspect of sustainable living. 💖

Hi Ekta! I've been watching Garden up videos since I started my balcony garden. Each time I watch a video, I feel like visiting my home garden and checking on my plants to make sure they are doing well :). I have some tomato plants that are 3 months old and don't have buds yet. However, some leaves are dropping or yellowing and I feel they are not growing well. I do give them cowdung compost manure. Also I recently bought NPK (12-12-17) fertlizer to help the plants grow. But I'm hesitant to use chemical fertilizers firstly because I want to grow plants organically, secondly, I live in Dubai and it's really hot right now. So, what do you suggest I do?

Hi there, very well and thoroughly explained. I have a quick question though. I have seen other videos on composting where the food scraps got so many maggots to decompose the food. Conditions were same as your bin, holes for oxygen and all.. but yours doesn't have maggots. Can you tell me why is that?? Are maggots necessary for decomposing the food?? Thanks so much for the response and wonderful content you always make 🙂

@nainja Kapoor. I wish she had solved your query. Because when I prepared compost for the first time, using Trust Basket composting bin there were a lot of maggots which really put me off. Can anyone please reply as to how one can avoid maggots formation in the compost bin?
@nainjakapoor47362 жыл бұрын
@@bernadetteraikar8822 hey dnt worry.. After 1 year of composting, I can now answer to you about maggots. Maggots comes when the soldier fly lays eggs on the food. Now that can be in 2 situations, one.. when the fly has entered your compost bin and hv laid eggs or two.. when the fly has laid eggs on the food scraps when you were storing it somewhere (before putting that into the compost bin). So, if you keep your food scraps and compost bin covered all the time, you will not get maggots. There is one exception though.. I got maggots in my bin during rainy season, I dnt know the reason but they were there and they came out of the bin too and my bins are NOT in any open area where the rain water can get into it. Rest, I never had that problem. I had also seen in a video that if you put watermelon rind in the bin, you can get maggots. So, I never put that. And FYI, maggots are good for composting. So, if you get some any time.. dnt worry they are good and soon they will become flies and leave the bin too.. I hope it helped. Happy composting 😊😊

Hi I use plastic bucket and I don't add cooked food. Otherwise I follow the steps same as you do. I have been doing this for almost 4 years and I get enough compost for my balcony garden. I even add the flowers from pooja room including tulsi which gives a good aroma to the compost.

I regularly prepare compost at home. But I never had issues with cockroaches, lizards or leaking from the bottom. I do it in a plastic plant pot, made some vertical cuts on the side with hot knife (holes can bring in insects) Adding a layer of soil first before adding the kitchen waste prevents leaking from the bottom. Add handful of soil to the kitchen waste as well and top it of with 1/2 to inch of soil. And I seal it with a plastic cover and make few holes on top with safety pin. So that bigger insects cant get in.. I only found few very small insects almost negligible to the eye. And absolutely no smell coz we cover it with soil.
