I show you step by step how I installed a Nature's Head composting toilet in our RV. This was an excellent upgrade allowing us to combine our black and gray tanks into one giant gray tank.

A composting toilet seems like the perfect compliment for our RV dry camping / boondocking setup. Since we now have no need for a black tank, it allows us to combine our gray and black tanks to make one gigantic gray tank. The composting toilet also uses now water so the water in our fresh water tank will last longer. These both allow us to stay on site longer since we won't have to dump our holding tanks or fill our fresh water tank as often. We also won't have to deal with the sewage or chemical treatments that go along with having a black tank. A composting toilet for us is a win-win-win!

I appreciated so much how you showed what DIDN'T work during this install...When you look at a lot of how-to videos, they seem so eeeaaasyyyy....And then you tackle the same job, and you hit a dozen obstacles. It's hard to accurately decide if you want to tackle something, and also it makes you feel like a total DOLT! Thanks so much!

Hey David, First of all, thanks for the walkthrough! We're putting our Nature's Head in in a week from now and are super grateful to see a familiar face on a video we desperately needed! Also, I wanted to say that as a beginning KZfaqr, it's super encouraging to see how far you guys as well as your production value have come in the last couple years. We've used a Nature's Head composting toilet for many years. Never had a single day of toilet sewage smell. No problems whatsoever. We use peat moss instead of the coconut material. It required zero work, unlike the coconut bricks. We add zero moisture to the composting medium, so we don't ever have problems with stuff growing in the composting bin. When we empty the bin, we do not do a lot of cleaning of the remaining residue, because that is already home to the bacteria that is needed to get the composting process started again.

Well at least you added a fuse that's what I was saying the whole video. Fuses should be installed as close to the battery as possible that way any chafing on The Wire that might cause it too short to metal which is usually grounded to the negative the battery will cause the fuse to trip preventing the long-run of wire from going up in flames. I know this the hard way thankfully it was just something small. The fuse is there to protect both the wire from damaging anything else and shut it off or to protect if you draw more than the wire is capable of supplying. It's also a good idea to do it that way as if the fuse were to ever blow you would have to trace down all the wire until you found it. I'm assuming it gets wet under the RV so I think I did see a non water-resistant electrical box down there and tape can only go so far.

They described it in another video. They put a valve on the very end of the sewage output tube. You then open the grey and black tank valves. As they would generally both flow to the same output they are now effectively plumbed together. Gravity will even the contents of the two tanks. As you fill the contents of your gray tank,it flows backwards into the black tank.

Love your channel, just got our first RV a month ago and watching and reading everything we can find. Your channel has been helpful. One thing though, I just now got to the same point you did with the toilet flange, tugged on it a few times and thought it was glued or bonded.. and then I tried twisting it, and voila, t unscrewed! It was screwed onto the pipe coming up from the black tank! I then put my red stopper thing into it and tightened the wingnut and it expanded in the pipe. I wonder if yours just needed to be unscrewed as well? - Anyway, See you out there somewhere boondocking soon!

Dude, that was awesome. Great job! Would that toilet work in a T@b 320 that has a wet bath, where the shower and toilet are enclosed together? Or do you think it might cause issues getting wet when showering? Thanks!
@FateUnbound
@FateUnbound 6 жыл бұрын
That is a great question, we wouldn't recommend it as we have a hard enough time keeping mold out without a wetbath, but these were originally made to go in boats so we'd recommend checking with the Natures Head manufacturer and double checking.

I've now seen maybe 25 toilet videos that's really enough but I will in my upcoming future build go the composting route but I'll make my own toilet in you're case I would have just used existing toilet for pee and if needed doo doo in a bag in the toilet and some litter in the bag make a cover and toss out bag w #2 etc in out saved money on the new toilet number one s could go in black tank empty out when needed.it's your business but since you already had a toilet there I think u threw u money down the drain so to speak but for some one wanting to see how this is installed its good you certainly have every right to do what u want .

Is there an issue with connecting the urine tank into the RV's grey water tanks? From what I have seen in many cases urine has been used as fertilizer in gardens, that aside I am assuming you are dumping the grey water at a waste station anyway...
@rkw221
@rkw221 3 жыл бұрын
people do that but if you are going to run urine into grey water be very prepared for really bad smelling grey water thanks to the urine. i've run across some who just plumb the urine into the existing black water tank instead. others just dump the bottle down the sink drain...

@rkw221

boondocking and usually replacing the black tank (or even grey tank) can be a lot of work so some decide to just let the grey & black water tanks become one big grey tank. I have plenty of room for another 100gal fresh water tank already if I decide to go that way. I like the idea of having the full 100gal of waste water storage for my rig. Where I like to roam there are not always dump stations so being able to hold the extra waste water is a big help.
