I have many of your tips in play already, but the "clear environment" advice was one of the best things I took from your tutorial. That immediately made a huge difference in stuttering and smoothness. I've had the G2 since it was released and have never reset it manually. I'm sure a windows reinstall cleared it, but that was probably last year. So much great advice! Thank you for taking the time to compile this entire presentation Sir!

I am commenting from 9 months in the future. I just wasted over an hour tweeking my settings. I am not sure if one of the updates changed something or not, but with this setup you don't need openxr or steam vr. Just crank everything to ultra and enjoy.. Thanks for the video though- that had to take a long time to make. subbed

This is a very good question. I’m working on a new video with updated settings but in the mean time tried this out last night. It’s fluid at 30fps under 400 knots in London or SF. BUT as soon as you starting real weather w/ complex clouds, it drops down to 23fps. Generally it can do complex weather OR complex photogrammetry comfortably but not both at 30fps.

@@fly_with_nick Thank you! I just updated my system to include a 3090ti and a G2 but I was thinking something was wrong when my frame rates weren't above 50fps. Now I feel a bit better.
@fly_with_nick

@@nathantw I never see 50fps because per the video I have it locked on motion reprojection - 30fps (45 if you have very low settings) is the expected max FPS in that case.

I have a 4090 + 5800x3D and in VR volumetric clouds has relitivly little impact compared to Terrain/objects level of detail. probably due to the insane GPU power available compared to CPU. I find Steam vR to be faster than OpenXR strangley. Dont use DLSS or TAA, its DLAA I think ? that looks best for antiailsing whilst reyaining detail, TAA is a little soft. I get 90FPS locked for the most part unless im in new york on Pico 4 streamed at 150mbps and god mode. there are no streaming artifacts at that level. the pico 4 needs more GPU power than say just running a G2 so its higly dependent on your setup. I know the new HVEC 10-bit streaming in VD is a GPU hog that litterally half my frame rate so I use H.265 and that lets my gpu fly and its greta on high bandwidth if you have it if not then it will look worse if you have to go down to 60mbps or whatever.

FS2020 uses well over 60 threads in use, and the 'limited by main thread' message often means the main thread is waiting on a semaphore for other threads to complete their tasks. As such, ALL CORE overclock is the best way to go, overvolting, and using WaterCooling to stop thermal throttling. I have my 10900K running all 20 threads at 5.1GHz and no core goes above 90C on a custom loop! My 3090 is watercooled as well, so I'm running 1960MHz GPU in FS2020 at about 420W. The 12900K is a little trickier to get maximum performance from all cores/threads. Agree on the rest. Very useful to non techies, but if you understand BIOS settings you can get much better results than XTU!
@dabneyoffermein595

so what about the "trickier" 12900K? how should i go about it or should i just keep it stock? i really would like to get max performance but i don't have a water-block (custom loop), just a watercooled corsair 360 extreme (or whatever it's called, sorry forgot the name).

@@dabneyoffermein595 I don't have any experience of the 12900K with its Performance and Efficiency cores but there are many KZfaq videos about tuning it for best gaming performance. I would suggest you wait until SU10 is released in a week (hopefully) as SU8 and SU9 introduced very significant performance degradation in MSFS for me (and lots of other people). They've delayed the release because SU10 Beta ran even worse (again for some beta testers including me). Hopefully DX12 will make better use of the CPU cores and DLSS will let you trade off graphics quality against FPS.

@@ColinDyckes thanks Colin, so when the new version (update) comes out, will there still be an option for DX11 & DX12, or are they going strictly to DX12?
@ColinDyckes
@ColinDyckes Жыл бұрын
@@dabneyoffermein595 Unknown. The Beta gave the choice of either, and I would expect the release to do the same. DX12 CAN make use of all CPU cores but only if the program is written to do so. It certainly didn't for me in the beta (33% worse performance) so I hope they resolve that before release. DX11 is effectively limited to a single core for graphics but MSFS has lots of threads handling other things.

On X-plane, I've noticed that it use only 1 core at 100%. But when I played around "affinity" in the task manager, I was able to find affinities who was able to share the power needed by the software. Because windows I able to manage the power needed by a software. And in the task manager you are able to change the priority of the software, you can earn few FPS more. And, I'm at 15mn of the video, my be you will talk about it in few minutes. But do a powershell script to stop services and software you don't need during your game session.

Things probably changed lately because I can't get near this at 30 fps with a 13700K undervolted and OCed (5.6 Ghz up to 3 cores) and a 3090 (undervolted, OCed on mem only). I'm not even close. At 80% scale I'm still GPU limited on the ground at like 22 fps. I'm really struggling with my setup, it's not even fun anymore. Glad for all of you guys out there who look like they're having fun, I'm not.

I can finally fly with airport traffic with no stutters at 100% in LA and NYC. What's weird is that I do After Effects and some 3d sims and in some cases, they're slower. That a cache bottleneck? Feels like with the stupidly small L3 cache, chip IO can back up pretty fast. Thoughts?

SO glad. I should have mentioned that if people can cherry pick tips from the (very long) video, and get some improvement, then its all worth it. No idea about other games, sorry! by the way - with those of us on very fast CPUs ive realized its possible to be NOT single thread / CPU limited but STILL get stutters - because MSFS 2020 requires burst performance when loading scenery, which causes, as you said, stutters. Those are easy to see because the load / temp goes up right when you're seeing the stutters. This is what I am trying to improve by increasing single core performance, and yes, it does work and help!

@crashtestpilot3883 , Great video :) . Quick question, isn't the HP reverb G2 resolution 2160 x 2160 per eye? How did you get 3200x3200 per eye? are you up-scaling to 3200x3200?
@fly_with_nick
@fly_with_nick Жыл бұрын
this is an excellent question and something that is really not often-enough explained by the VR dev community, or understood by the user community. The reason, I believe, we render at a much higher resolution than the screen resolution ("100% render scale" is actually already 3200x3200 by the way, so it's the *recommended* resolution by HP), is because the image is significantly stretched post-game render, pre-populating the little VR screens, in order to compensate for the lenses which create a lot of distortion by being so close to the screen. This stretching / warping means the middle of the image looses a lot of detail unless it is rendered at a much higher resolution than the actual final screen resolution. In fact, if you render up to 5000x5000 (yes, you read that right) on the reverb g2, you will see SIGNIFICANT image quality improvement. You could call this 'super sampling' (I think thats what you meant by upscaling) but it actually creates an image that just about, finally, after being stretched, utilizes the actual pixels in the middle of the image. If you have a VR headset and dont' believe any of this - you can try it for yourself. Just set the render scale to 300 or 400% and look at how much more detail (resolution) you see in the image. New video about to be released explaining this with screenshots.

@@fly_with_nick Hey, thanks for the detailed response. Really appreciate it :) So, if I understand correctly the screen has physical pixels arranged 2160x2160 horizontaly and vertically, but it renders at 3200x3200 to compensate for the image lose, due to the stretching and warping? It makes sense now :) I'm planning to get into VR, and the HP reverb G2 looks like the right choice. How's the Chromatic Aberration on the G2 btw? Online through-the-lens videos show really bad chromatic aberration on G2 compared to other VR headsets. Is it the same in IRL?

dude lol! lemme fix that: - undervolt (reduce power) ***[this is what reduces heat. Heat is the single greatest obstacle that limits processor speed and current voltage is nearly 100% responsible for how hot the chip is] - overclock (increase performance) ***[While overclocking does increase performance, higher than stock clock speeds require higher than stock voltages. It's how OCing works. Too low of a voltage and the chip will stall out, crashing your computer. Starting to see the balance here?] - increase fan speed (using bios) to reduce thermal throttling ***[What you described here is the battle with the thermal problem (your first step). You can get aggressive with this one. This is why water cooling became popular. It should definitely be coming together now.]

I'm having great results, light years better than any other setup I've tried! But there is one thing happening I don't understand. Reprojection makes things fantastically smooth with some aircraft/scenery and a lot, LOT worse with others. FPS is good, but I'm getting a lot of stutters, and black areas on the side of the viewing area when I turn my head. I'm watching the FPS meter and it doesn't say I'm CPU bound the way it does when loading a menu, but that's sure what it seems like. Examples: Cessna 172 it's fantastic. Milviz 310R or the Kodiak 100, it's better without it. I get 36fps in rain and fog at about 70% scaling in OpenXR, with an R7, 32G ram and a 3060ti. Can you think of any reason the reprojection would start doing more harm than good depending on how heavy the aircraft is? (It's scenery, too. Toronto city center payware chokes me down to 4 fps with it on, 21 with it off)
@ParallaxEffect
@ParallaxEffect 2 жыл бұрын
sounds like the GPU can't cope with the settings. you shouldn't be getting 36fps with motion reproduction (depending on headset), as it locks at 22.5, 30, 45 etc for the G2. Aircraft definitely impact FPS too - taxing both the CPU and GPU to different levels. As does scenery. But 4fps means something is probably set too high for the GPU. You can generally ignore the 'CPU bound' notices that flash in and out with the developer menu on. I don't believe them.
@scottstoll-dn2yx
@scottstoll-dn2yx 2 жыл бұрын
@@ParallaxEffect The thing is, when I change airports or planes with the exact same settings, it can be great. IE: NZWN in a 172 with repro on is better than I ever dreamed. 310R or Kodiak, it's dropped to 16 on the meter and I can really tell, but if I turn repro off with the same plane and airport, I'm back up to 24 on the ground. Yes, it's obvious that adding complexity will tax the GPU, but what I don't get is why it seems to hurt the ability to use reprojection more than anything else. I would expect things to still be bad even after turning repro off, but it gets better, and that's what's got me confused.

well full of information thank you. But... (yea that word is annoying I know ;)) I want to ask you a question, why do you always lock the fps to 30pfs while using 90Hz. As the motion reprojection adds one calculated frame between two frames and this means 30fpsx2 = 60fps. So if you want to go to 90fps shouldn't you aim for 45fps? You set your refresh rate to 90Hz but you are limiting your fps to 60.
@fly_with_nick

MR can add 1,2 or 3 frames extra per ‘real frame’. So you can do 45,30, or 22.5 ‘real’ fps to get 90fps. 45 (1/2) is too high a bar unless you sacrifice visual clarity, in my option.

What's going on with motion reprojection in OpenXR for AMD GPUs? I've got a 6800 XT and get 25-30fps with motion reprojection enabled and looks awful, with it disabled I get 65-70fps
@fly_with_nick
@fly_with_nick 2 жыл бұрын
Interesting. I don't have experience with AMD GPUs but there is some FPS hit from motion reprojection. For example, on the settings I have my setup, I might get 40-50fps without motion reprojection. But I'd rather get a solid 30fps which turns into 90fps, than see 40fps (which has visible stuttering all the time). By the way, the FPS counter will never show 90fps, even if that's what your eyes are seeing, with motion reprojection. It will show 22.5, 30, or 45fps when it's locked (on a 90hz reverb G2). The game and the FPS counters do not count the extra FPS generated by motion reprojection, even though you are actually getting them in the headset.

Many thanks for your hard work! I only have a 11400 and a rtx3050 oc and I run 3 1080p monitors with the side 2 going to a quadro m4000. When i switch back from the HP G2 MSFS forgets my window stretching for the 3 monitors but it is an easy adjustment. I tried the experimental multi monitor set up and got it working and aligned but when I switched back it would collapse the displays under the main screen and it was a pain to move them back (at least it remembered the alignment) My goal is to fly around the world in real time by flying an A320 (with unlimited fuel) to the major cities one weekend at a time (with autopilot and the 3 monitor display) and then exploring the area with a g2 helicopter, the HP G2 and Wikipedia. Anyways, thanks again for your excellent guide.

What temperature were you thermal throttling at put of interest?
@fly_with_nick
@fly_with_nick 2 жыл бұрын
I noticed thermal throttling happening at just 7-10% CPU usage with temps in the 90-100C range (this is NOT uncommon with this chip). The most important change by far was increasing the fan resting speed significantly, and ramping up at lower temps, so overall much more cooling. This allowed a higher clock speed on low active core count (1 in my case) and much smoother MSFS 2020 performance :) now it doesnt hit more than 70C or so.

@soundscaperecordings1111 2 жыл бұрын
@@fly_with_nick dang! Yeh that's toasty alright! 😆 I take it that's with the stock cooler? It sounds like your case doesn't have very good airflow tbh or the thermal pad / headsink is improperly applied.. it certainly shouldn't be throttling on default voltage! Personally I would invest in a nice aio water cooling system and some decent thermal paste. They aren't that expensive (£100 ish) especially when compared to the rest of your system. This will bring down temps considerably on your CPU and also keep temps down in your case a bit too so you should be cooler. It shouldn't get over 80 degrees really even with extra voltage. Also undervolting the CPU doesn't actually increase performance in the same way it does with a GPU as the gpu will dynamically adjust clock speed based on temperature. The CPU will not. As long as it's in the safe thermal limits and not throttling you will be able to increase the clock speed with increased voltage. For example my 9900k at stock voltage of 1.34 sits at 4.7ghz happily however if I increase voltage to 1.4 I am able to clock it to 5 GHz. It still doesn't thermal throttle and all is well
@fly_with_nick
@fly_with_nick 2 жыл бұрын
The base TDP of your chip is 50% lower than the base TDP of the 12900k. That in itself shows the thing throws off a lot more heat, which in turn has to be dealt with even more efficiently to prevent high temp throttling. Ultimately, my cooling setup may be as good or better but the chip just runs a lot hotter. But the AIO isn't a bad idea, given the noise the DH-15 puts out anyway, I might just jump to an AIO!

So I set my CPU to run pretty high - which improves thermals. I think you can search a bit to understand what’s happening when the chip is current throttling. I think it could mean a few different things, but I’m not an expert, sorry! That said, I think making this CPU run faster will only improve performance in very limited circumstances (IE loading new terrain), as the GPU is likely the bottleneck about 95% of the time you’re in the sim.

Care to elaborate? Undervolting decreases stability for lower power utilization but will not make your CPU ‘dead’. All settings revert upon instability. Lower temps generally lead to longer life vs ‘dead’. Same with GPU. The biggest CPU optimization was to turn the fan up. Does cooling your CPU more also lead to ‘dead’? Seriously interested in alternatives you have that can improve performance that lead to ‘less dead’ CPU/GPU? thanks!

@@ParallaxEffect The man's voltages are steadily at 1.4V. That's undervolting for you? It's literally on the upper edge of what you're supposed to be "feeding" the cpu. @@ParallaxEffect Just so i point you in the right direction. 1) Ofcourse Vcore is changing, it's how high it's reaching that's the problem. I'm feeling nauseous just thinking about it lurking over 1.4 at just below 5% cpu utilisation. 2) Completely wrong. Voltage is directly raising the temperature. So taking care of the temperature at a certain voltage is pre-requisite to even start testing cpu operations at a certain power treshold. But high voltage is high voltage, it does not change the fact that high voltages will hurt the cpu no matter what the temperatures are. The optimum rule is keeping the voltage as low as possible, but as high as necessary to keep things stable at a certain frequency. 4. Exactly my point. There's a general consensus you can't just recommend certain OC settings generalized for everyone. And i didn't say anyone's cpu will straight up and die at these settings but you can be DAMN sure it's in pain and won't last nowhere near as long as a cpu that was never oc-ed. I don't even want to know what the voltages look like under heavy load here and i am not very sure it won't burn someone's cpu straight up. Also, i know very well what the voltages for 12th gen SHOULD look like. Now please, before you spout nonsenses around the web just because you ...like how you sound or something, please go read. I've been overclocking since you were in kindergarden. And lastly.....Didn't even bother to do a stress test, let alone recommend it. Lol. You can't get more noob than that.
