While compressed air is free for air rifles that cock or have break barrels, this isn’t true for PCP air guns. Dr. Russ uses this KZfaq video to discuss the cheapest, possible ways to obtain compressed air for PCP air guns. He includes small compressors and small tanks up to larger aqua lung tanks. Dr. Russ has discussed manual air pumps in the past, and suggests that you can cancel your gym membership if you shoot a lot.

Hello Dr. Russ, me again..... :) I know it's a bit older, but great video once again, sir. Being a certified Scuba diver myself (hence my profile pic...lol), I wanted to share a few things if you don't mind in order to help out our fellow PCP air gunners. In the world of scuba diving, the type of tank valves on your cylinders are known as "Yoke" style valves. There is another type of cylinder valve, which is totally different, that scuba divers often use which is called a "DIN" valve. If anyone is getting this setup for their PCP's, make sure you get the YOKE style valve on your cylinder/scuba tank(s). Speaking solo from a scuba diving viewpoint, and being that I own numerous scuba tanks, don't forget that your tanks MUST pass a yearly visual inspection by a certified tester if you are having them filled at a scuba diving shop (I can't speak for air gun shops and their rules and regulations, but I would assume they must abide by the same). In addition, scuba tanks must be hydro-tested every 5 years. These tests are required to make sure a cylinder is in good shape and more than capable of holding its compressed air rating. I hope this little bit of info. will benefit other PCP"ers" who are looking to use this great method to charge their air rifles. Happy shooting!!!

G A's Outdoor Adventures ... thanks for the info ... I should have included this information in this video... along with the fact that while steel and aluminum tanks can be tested and qualified for an indefinite period of time ... Carbon Fiber tanks which seem to be the rage right now because they are lighter .... have a definitive life to them of 20 years... and a lot of these find their way into the air gun market thru fire departments which often upgrade their equipment ... meaning that these fiber optic tanks often have much less life in them. And yes, air gun shops that refill scuba tanks have to follow the law too ... as should individuals who purchase compressors that are capable of filling scuba tanks. Please stay in touch .. I dive too ... and knowledge on this subject is seriously lacking. I have a video coming up where I restore several aluminum tanks... Dr. Russ

I just gave you subscription 1000. I have the same set-up. Multiple tanks. Isn't it great !! A little searching on Craigslist got me 2 tanks for free !! One is an 80 the other is a 100. The 100 tank I repainted also. I also have a little 13cf pony tank keep in my truck. That was a yard sale deal. One day I'll get a carbon fiber 4500 but for now,I'm good. My two 10 shot Discovery rifles only need 2000 psi. I put a little more to get an even 40 shots per fill. Thanks for the video.

John ... thanks for being # 1000 ... you will always hold a special place for me. Yes... those older scuba tanks can be a real cheap help in this expensive hobby of ours. I recently got a tall 4500 tank that was used by the fire department to refill the small individual tanks. Extremely helpful ... but also very heavy. Keep me in your loop with your air gun experiences. Dr. Russ

Of course when we are talking about scuba tanks holding air ... we can only talk in pounds per square inch ... and any reference to feet per second (velocity) or foot pounds (energy) have to be associated with an air gun...rifle or pistol. Dan Stenis .... good to hear from you .... I have a budget air compressor at home and friends who have others. I thought I had the best with the ability to work off of a plug in my home and a power outlet in my truck .... but honestly ...... they are noisy ... not sure how long they will last ....they take longer to fill newer air guns that hold 4500 psi ..... If I were to buy a new one today, I would buy a refurbished Hatsan ($1800 ) off their website for $999.... otherwise, I rely on several scuba tanks... taking several over to the scuba shop and filling for $ 7.00 each. I have found them on Craigslist, Facebook Market Place for about $ 125 each.... The steel and or aluminum ones last forever ... the fiber covered last 15 years and cost three times that. So until I find them improve another couple of levels.... I havent done one yet. Please share with me if you find something different. Thanks for writing... Dr. Russ

Curious if this system could work to power a pneumatic cylinder/tool. They make lemonade smashers that will smash/crush/muddle lemons for fair style lemonade that run off of CO2 tanks or compressed air. Would be nice to utilize a scuba tank because of cost, but the psi to run the lemonade smasher piston needs to be in the range of 70-110psi. would this work? does the adjustment on the side allow for easily and reliable adjusting to lower the psi or would something else be needed?

Every scuba tank is different based upon when it was made and how strong it is the 100 in³ aqua lungs will accept 3300' pounds and the aqua long tanks will only fill the tank to its legal limit... The small aluminum first responder tanks covered in fiberglass will accept 4500 lbs... I don't own one so I dont know how many fills you can get from them... Again... The small Chinese compressors can easily overheat and you want to be careful using them on the small tanks... glad to hear from you... The Dr doesn’t have a compressor?!? I’m surprised! I don’t have any scuba tanks yet. But I bought a unbranded Nomad ll compressor when I ordered my Bulldog (a airgun I decided on thanks to you). Now it’s a few weeks later and I have a FX impact m3 .25 and considering some scuba tanks to take to the indoor range. Using my compressor at the range was no big deal, but a tank would be a bit less of a hassle than trying to get the bay next to the outlet lol

Bruno Max ... good to hear from you. This scuba tank trick is one I learned from a group of scuba divers who owned several tanks. I actually confirmed it with a scuba shop owner. If you used your tanks .... say down to 2000 pounds per square inch.... then your air gun or guns would only be filling to 2000 lbs. Sure .. you used the same amount of air ... but your guns were ultimately getting only 2000 lbs each towards the end. However, using this method allows more of your air guns to be filled to 2600 or higher pounds. Only the last air gun you filled would drop to 2000 pounds. Please keep me in your loop of air gun experiences.... Dr. Russ
