The best way to do a compression test and a leak-down test, demonstrated on my boat's Mercruiser (Chevy-block) engine. Good demonstration with lots of explanation and helpful tips. Starts-off cheery, because I thought the problem was simple, ends-up completely different!
I have tags in the video where you can jump-forward if you understand what I'm showing and just want to get to the moment I puke.

Good video. Not happy that I am sitting here watching it. Pretty amazing that I did not even see you break a sweat. Maybe a bead at about 32 minutes :)

Also - easy way to close valves - turn the rockers all out x turns (enough to remove them) - no fussing with cranking etc. :) theyre all closed. When ur done screw each rocker nut back the same amount -

Antifreeze in oil is almost-always head-gasket

Thank you for your fast reply Ed!! Guess the next step would be a compression tester like the one you had? Also, should I be able to see the loss of anti-freeze on the plugs? About a quart/year during the Oregon season. Watching you work, I'll Never complain about working on my 7.4 in a 10 foot wide boat again!!

You won't see antifreeze on the sparkplugs. You've likely got a head-gasket failure between cooling-jacket and oil-jacket, not between the rings (where there is no AF normally). Had an engine once with a cracked cylinder-sleeve that was impossible to find because it was raw-water cooled. I would've noticed loss of AF in a FWC, but you don't notice loss of raw-water into a cylinder. Loss of AF could be cracked sleeve, mixing of AF with oil is probably head gasket

I got No bubbles in the heat exchanger anti-freeze while the engine was running. Cyl. Cyl. 1 - 125 psi, leak down 2 % valve covers 2 - 120 psi, leak down 31 % valve covers 3 - 110 psi, leak down 40 % VC & Carb 4 - 90 psi, leak down 72% VC & Carb 5 - 87 psi, leak down 77 % VC & Carb 6 - 100 psi, leak down 62 % VC & Carb 7 - 120 psi, leak down 8 % VC only 8 - 120 psi, leak down 10 % VC & Carb

Awesome video, what did you finally determine. I am doing a compression test on my 6.2 liter GM this weekend. I was told I have zero compression in one cylinder I am hoping it is a problem with a valve or rocker arm. Your video helped tremendously!

Engine was far too lean (computer injector-mapping issue), cooked the heads. #8 got so hot the valve-guide dropped out of the head, dropping the exhaust valve into cylinder, then all hell broke loose. Found metal fragments in intake from piston pounding the valve to oblivion. Yeah, thanks for the interest! Appears computers were for a 5.0, because there's no other way to explain 17.2A/F. We faked-out computer every way possible (can't reprogram the ECM555) to richen things and ultimately found the computer's mapping was correct IF WE BOOSTED FUEL PRESSURE FROM 43PSI to 51PSI (+20%, which is the difference from 5.0L to 6.2L), getting this down in the 12.4A/F range.
