I like the sound where you still have very low end and brilliant highs, but balanced. Like the sound of new strings. They sound so metallic. I call it a wirey sound.

Compression is used on almost everything in a mix, and usually on the master buss as well to glue everything together. My optimal bass recording setup is to take the (pre-effects) DI, low pass it @ 160Hz, heavily compress it, mix it with the (post effects) amp mic that's been low cut @ 160Hz with moderate compression, then run that mix through yet another stage of light compression.

I use an mxr dyna comp for my bass, and it's my most important pedal now. I did use a boss cs3, which was fine, I tried an mxr bass compressor but couldn't get on with it at all, honestly didn't seem to change anything. So went back to the dyna comp

I had an extra Barber Tone Press, having the “blend” control works great, I might get a more “bass” compressor, but there’s a lot of “guitar” pedals that have enough frequency headroom to work with bass without issues, though any pedal that lets you mix/blend in the original signal is better.

I'm gonna put my two cents in here. As someone who has known what compression does to the signal for a while, but never noticed a meaningful difference (since my version of a compressor was just... playing evenly when it was called for, dynamically when I could). The idea of a compressor only "peaked" (yes, thank you, piqued... intentional) my interest once I realized that some of the more rock/pop country guitarists used one to achieve that "splatty" tone of the chicken picking variety. I always liked that sound, so I got a cheap compressor. If I can give you one piece of advice here, pay for a Dynacomp, Keeley, or Ego. Something good. You'll have more control, and best of all, you'll actually be able to hear what it's doing to the signal.

After I started playing bass in the 90s, I built myself a pretty sick Gallien-Krueger rack mount amp kit. Included was an Alesis 3630 (overrated, but effective). I was sold on compression as essentially a way to SAVE your amp/speakers from destruction. I was trained as a classical and jazz musician, but I also played funk, punk rock, and metal. I ended up getting rid of the rig because I grew incredibly sour with GK after their customer service/repair service basically screwed me out of almost $1000 (that was crazy, reply if you want the full story). BUT, I also had to have one of my Ampeg SVT head's circuits resoldered because I used to play so hard, and probably because I didn't have the rig properly compressed. This is one thing that's confusing me as a 40 year old man: what happened to all the rack compressors? Not only was compression taken care of, but they also included noise gates and dual channels for multi layered compression (studio use only). You'd just connect it to effects loop, and boom, everything is taken care of. And IT WAS ONLY $90!! Everything is an f'ing $200 pedal these days, and you have to buy a separate noise gate, and more pedals if you want studio layered compression. Can someone please explain this to me? Bring back the Rack Mount!

I may be a few years younger than you man, depending on the level you're playing at I'm just using a zoom G 3 guitar pedal that has compression Noise Gate and all that jazz and it makes a meaningful difference to my sound, but I will say just from common sense if you're playing on a professional level you may seek another alternative

Compression is most useful on bass other than vocals because low frequency notes can get lost easily in a mix. It would be good to hear without the compression then with the compression to hear the difference.

Compression is something you want to feel and not necessarily hear. Some people want that squashed tone, but most of the time you just want that slight of hand compression. You'll feel it in the way you play, but can dial it in so it sounds transparent.

Totally late reply lol. Try running a sansamp bass driver di into a keely compressor with a jazz bass at a guitar center or other store. I was a doubter until I had to play a chili peppers tune for a gig, and that really delivered a nice slap tone I was never able to achieve before.

As an alternative, you could practice and develop a more even technique. In fact you 'should' practice 'without' compression to win advantage of all the technical facility it will encourage, and resort to compression, if at all, only in the studio. Of course, that makes 'your' compressed signal inorganic and lifeless like every other track on the session. Who cares if one note 'sticks' its head up a little from the others? No one who cares about 'music' will make an accounting of it, because they are 'focused' on the musical forest rather than the instrumental trees.

Compression is a great alternative to learning how to play evenly, much as autotune is a great alternative to learning how to sing in tune. Perfect for when you want to completely eliminate the human element from your recordings. Snap everything to the grid, do every track in one take, and sound just like everything else!
