MSRT typically runs automatically once a month in the backround. You don't notice it, but it happens.

I knew the tool existed, but have never actually ran it directly like this. Pretty cool

It may be a known process to the masses but its a good tip for those that still dont understand computers. I show my 11 year old this stuff and hes getting so much better at working a computer. Im no longer my familys tech support. My 11 year old is.

If you do similar but type notepad you get a program that tests your keyboard. if you then press all the keys one by one you'll see them come up in the "notepad". If any key doesn't work, you just found the broken one. Great hack.

My brother, yes, that's very cool. It is not, however, a hack. What you're doing is called "using a feature". For instance: using a screw-on cap to seal your plastic bag? That's a hack. Using a feature developed, advertised, and present in tutorials, that's using a program properly. "hey! I bet you didn't know this! If you pull up to a drive-trough teller at your bank, and give them your ID, they'll allow you to access your money WITHOUT having to use your atm card!"

Several issues; 1st, running something from a command prompt isn't a hack, it's just the obtuse old way of doing things. 2nd; even if you could call it a hack, it's a WINDOWS hack, not a computer hack. Not everybody uses Windows, shockingly... 3rd; If you're relying on Windows built in junk for malware search/removal you're already doing it wrong....

1. I knew that, 2. not a hack. MRT = Malware removal tool, so 3. not a virus scan. This scan is run when it is downloaded as part of windows updates, it's actually one of the longest running updates because the update process won't complete and move on to the next thing until this scan is finished. If you have your own malware scanner, such as MBAM, you can bypass this by running task manager, finding the MRT process while the "update" is running and killing it, which will result in the update completing as successful, since it wasn't able to identify any malware on the system while it was running. MRT is run in conjunction with windows defender, which is an actual antivirus suite from microsoft; these things combined gives most windows computers a basic level of anti-virus and anti-malware protection, though it won't nearly be as good as third party tools like MBAM or a fully featured AV and AM suite that you pay for.

Antivirus programs are essentially useless these days. Fortunately, I've been using Linux exclusively for about two decades now. Never a virus or spyware to deal with.

MSRT doesn't scan for virusses, but for 'recorded' (by MS) application that are considered unwanted. It also is (at least used to be) part of your Windows Updates.

He forgot one important thing. You have to push the windows icon on keyboard and R at the same time. Then it opens..

As long as it tells you what files it thinks are viruses and allows you to choose what to delete beforehand rather than doing it automatically. That would suck to lose data you want because your computer thinks it shouldn't be there.

very wel a hack : you can use snipping tool in games if you use shift+windows+s if you start snipping tool the standard way you can't do this also windows 10 had 3 snipping tools 2 of them you could launch one being just a outdated one and the newer one and the 3rd still remains which is the shortcut so yes you technically still have 2 due to the way snipping tool appears to function

Thanks! Just tried the quick scan on win7 laptop. As it worked it claimed to find 4 infected files but then said no malicious software was detected, also "This tool is not a replacement for an anti-virus product" and that I should use one. While opening it it said a newer version might be available -- am prolly many years behind that curve. Am trying full scan now.

Doesn’t scan for viruses. Scans for malicious software. Two different things. You need to use both.

It will also scan the external drives you don't want it to scan. So if you have any "app cracks" be careful because it will delete them. But for the normal user it OK to use :-)
