love the way this video merges practical tutorials with an introduction to the more abstract philosophy and ethos of monome (which remains essentially the same, 13 years later). Thanks for this

@Bonzoandthemadhatter the monome is a USB hardware controller with an open framework that allows others to write programs for it, for instance, the program mlr allows you to chop up loops and replay them using the pushbuttons as cue points

I didn't understand what this was until the third example. This is really sweet

It works with OSC and MIDI, but as far as I know, the MIDI system doesn't activate the lights. So you could map MIDI functions, but I would recommend that you probably should try to do it with OSC - which will let you have the proper visual feedback. The beauty of the Monome is that it is entirely flexible and customisable. Ableton has a really great programme written for it called 'Seven Up Live' which is essentially a sequencing preset. Free as well, if you have Ableton.

@elysianphoenix agreed, electronic music may be "easier" to produce from a classically-trained standpoint but it requires 10x the dedication as just playing an instrument. theres hours upon hours spent training the ears, lining up tracks and days wasted staring at equalizers... neither one is more "musical" or "real", theyre both labors that demand an incredible grade of effort and deserve equal respect

@ jazzmaster606 It depends on where in the column he puts his fingers. He mastered his settings so he knows where they are but it depends on the placement of the button. What it looks like is the further left the slower and further right faster.

There are some applications that have been made for the Monome, but essentially you may have to programme them yourself. The beauty of it is that it doesn't *do* anything particularly. I've got an Arduinome (Open Source, but otherwise identical) and I've been programming a basic sequencer on Max/MSP for it.

@mffu ok it is a midi controller. the sounds all come from software in a computer. how it works is that rows or columns can be assigned different sounds or loops. a tempo is set inside a computer which controls the speed the rows and columns play at. also, individual buttons can be assigned sounds which is how sound effects are implemented into songs. honestly, i dont know that much about it. i do know the full potential of what it can do is too much to explain. i may be wrong so dont freak

@ElectricNoirOST What you don´t understand - I could play any of these phrases on any keyboard instrument but none of these computer guys could do so. It´s about making music with your own fingers or your own voice, it´s about playing solo or together with other musicians in chamber music or in a band. It´s about the satisfaction to be able to play a difficult piece after weeks of practicing. It´s about improvisation - it´s about musicianship! Your "tools" are just an illusion of making music.

Perhaps I do not know Adam personally, nor were we friends in high school, but I knew him then. He was a talented quiet musician that really kept to himself. And I do occasionally browse through his blog where he speaks very intelligently and soundly. Just because I'm not a big fan of his music doesn't mean I don't support him being from the same high school and city as me. My rebuttal earlier stated that I was in a bad mood when I initially commented on this video. I'm eating those harsh words.

No these are actually used, and their is an art behind them. Yes you put the loops on each button from using the computer but they are legit musical instruments of the modern era. Electronic music at it's finest. Works just like your programmable F keys.

The monome is pretty simple. What is more difficult is to keep the phase. A good phase gives the best monomes.

My brother was looking something up on KZfaq and came across this. He started to watch it and my son who has mild Autism dropped what he was doing to watch and revel in the even and melodic tones. Have you ever thought about using your program with Special Needs children? If not, it may be something to think about. I like this... Keep up the good work. :)
@mediocrefunkybeat14 жыл бұрын
How do you mean? Max/MSP is a graphic programming environment. It's similar (in a sense) to Quartz Composer - you connect object boxes together to pass around data that is generated and affects other parts of the programme - creating output. Right now I'm integrating Open GL into an Arduinome sequencer...

@gtrgdss I would agree that in theory, using an iPad or iPhone/iPod would not be as fun. But the people who make the Monome have sworn off manufacturing them in any large numbers, so I'm guessing that most won't have a choice but to use an app.
@TheLmfaodyl13 жыл бұрын
They only made 50 Monomes for 2011 and they all sold out within an hour. To get one you have to either buy one off ebay or contact the people that sell them and arrange a specially designed one for you.

This is the same sort of thing as the Tenori On and it produces the same sort of music. From all the promo videos, you get the feeling that you just press buttons and then magically and easily, you create music. But in reality, you're either really really REALLY good and can indeed create music worth listening to, or you're just a regular guy who only would use this as a toy and could only create "toy music."

Excuse me, I was thinking of buying a monome but they don't sell them in my country. What I can buy here is a Novation controller, i've seen some vids here on youtube and people seem to use Novation for more Dubstep kind of music. Is it possible to create the same music you are playing in this vid with a Novation?

Also, I should rephrase my view on Owl City. Adam has a natural talent for being a lyricist and has an excellent understanding of music. I admit I think some songs are catchy and very well put together. In the music business that's what it's all about, getting fame by hit songs. So I have nothing against his music; it's creative, it's fresh, it's different. I feel that he could have made even better, less technological dependent music with a band with that tech plus conventional instruments.
