Good work To protect the ATX again short circuit. It will be better to connect the Green wire (power on) to Relay contact with black wire. And to energize the relay with the 12 v or 5 v accorditly.

I would like to power a MTX 8000 12" sub with my old cooler master 500watt power supply. The sub is 400 rms. I was thinking of getting a 300 watt car amp. Would a class A/B or class D amp make best use of a 500watt PSU?
@maltepettersson30835 жыл бұрын
I don't think it's gonna handle 300w very good. Use 200w amplifiers to be safe or get a 12v battery instead, better and safer

You need a bigger psu, they make some that go up to 1500 watts. You would have to run 2
@sterlingbartlowe30564 жыл бұрын
watts = amps x volts. The chart on the side of the power supply, the one the video shows, has the watts listed for each of the rails, and a maximum overall wattage. Divide that wattage by 12 and you got your amps. Use the proper sized wire for that amperage if you use a junction block, and I wouldn't use a cheap or exceptionally long power cable or extension cord.

Hi Great Video i have actually done this project my self and something i found thats good is if you draw to much current from them they normally shut off automatically before they damage them selves. another power source i used was the LED power kits you can buy off Ebay as they actually have a variable voltage from 10-14.5 volts which is super useful however they dont protect them selves so you have to be careful you dont draw to much current from them havent killed one my self yet but i have had one get pretty warm

The problem with cheap computer PSUs is that 12V output depends on the load on 5V rail. If there's no load, you will get a very soft 12V rail - voltage will quickly decrease with any load. To get the most out of a PSU like this, you need to put a solid load on the 5V rail. It's a different story with modern PSUs that get 5V and 3,3V output from a 12V rail and will allow you to drain full power from the 12V rail (that's also how you know it's this kind of power supply - max output on a 12V rail will be the same as a total max output).
@antonioprado80686 жыл бұрын
Tomas Kuruc I just bought a thermaltake sp-850m for a jl360/2. Amp uses a 50amp fuse. The psu is 70a/840watt on single 12v. Would I still need a dummy load on the 5v and 3.3. I purposely got a bigger psu that is also an 80plus bronze to help with heat and efficiency as I need this amp to run at least at 80% load,bridged which will be between 280-360 watts. And this needs to run for a minimum of 5hrs at this load. So I know the basics which is adding all yellow, black and putting green/black. Now what I need help with is efficiency, and stable load. So if that requires dummy resisters etc and where, please shed light or find me a video of someone doing exactly this cause all these video sick cause they never show the system working or if they do, at what volume to let me know it's stable
@tomkocur6 жыл бұрын
that all depends, check the actual voltage on 12V rail while the amp is in load, if it doesn't fall below 11,5V, you're all good, if it does, just connect a couple of car bulbs (in parallel) to the 5V rail (red). That PSU has a strong 12V rail and is quite modern, so it might not even have the type of regulation that's used on cheap PSUs.

@videomaker8115 жыл бұрын
No u wrong. Please learn electronic. The voltage is still the same just increase the current. But u can't combine all of them cause it have different current output. If u device draw more current then the one with lower current output will burn the ic inside the psu.

Davon bekommt man ne t.amp e400. Die leistet locker 10 mal mehr als die 20 Watt die bei dem Pfusch rauskommen. Strom ist Lebenslänglich!

some require to see a load on the 5v rail to stay on...light bulb 10 watt resistor etc. Some have 'sense' wires monitoring voltage connected at 21 pin connector. If you see different colored wires going to same pin these should remain connected together. ie mine had a brown wire connected to orange 3v pin and a pink wire to red 5v pin.

I am currently using trying to build one did all wires same as u my watts on power supply is 350 max an I have a 2500 watt amp pushing a 15inch subwoofer. But if I run volume up to 25 its stays running anything after that it dies??? Help
@karlmagnuson7374 жыл бұрын
Your power supply should have at least 150w of headroom more than your amplifier. Your subwoofer works at low volume because you aren't asking much from the power supply, but once you give it a higher load the thing craps out because it is no where near powerful enough to support your amplifier.
@jamesgoodacre23054 жыл бұрын
Hi, your amp in the real world won't be putting out 2500 watt. You need to know the rms wattage.that usually will be quite a bit lower. Also you need to make sure that any psu you use has adequate amp rating which is the same or better still slightly higher than your amplifier. Check this by simply checking fuses on you amplifier. I would have thought a psu of say 750w minimum with a amp rating of say 60amp would be plenty powerful enough.

Generally .. SUV batteries are 80-90 Ah - 12V . 12 x 80 = 960 watts.There is no problem . If we connect it in to a heavy truck battery (150 Ah ) 150Ah x 12v =1800w there is also no problem with the car audio we know ! In my point of view computer power supply output which we are using is a pure DC as like from battery source. So no need to panic..!
@Pirmy766 жыл бұрын
I think you should learn the difference between A and Ah. Saying that a 80 Ah battery is 960W is... well totall nonsense. The 80Ah battery specification meand that the battery has 80Ah capacity. It means that a battery can supply 80A for one hour. Example: if you have a device that uses 10A 12V (120W), the battery will be dead in 8 hours. If you have a device that uses 40A 12V (480W) then the battery will be dead in 2 hours. Calculating Ah x V is.. nonsense.

Hi mate! Thx the video! The thing is I did everything the same as you but when I start it the fan is rolling a short time and turning off. I read many forum sites but no one can give a normal answer. The power supply is brand new. What do you think?
@josephsvensson66375 жыл бұрын
Some atx power supplies will shut off after a while if no load is detected. Try putting a 1A load on the 5V rail. A 5 ohm power resistor should do the trick, just make sure its rated for at least 5W
@simbatale5 жыл бұрын
I ordered an older type of power supply and it is working but I have two power supply now lol anyway I will try the resistor trick. I hope it will be working. Thank you for your advice. :)
@Jawad.15 жыл бұрын
The problem (at your side) is with the positive and negative connection with the amp! You have connected positive 12v wire of PSU with negative 12v wire of the amp. Connect positive with positive and negative with negative and your problem will be solved. PSU turns itself off when it senses the improper connection. It's a safety measure built into it.
@felixlegendre21455 жыл бұрын
the problem is that the psu have an over current/over voltage protection that cut the power when it exceed the current limit imposed by the psu. it is possible to bypass those protection by buying some circuit board sold on internet for about 5-25$

mine only puts out 11.4 volts but that will still run 12 volt items - you dont need exactly 12 volts to run 12 volt items - to charge a 12 volt battery to full capacity you need to charge over 12 volts - most cars charge at a max of 14 to 15 volts - anythinig over that things start to fry - ive seen over 18 volts being thrown out of an alternator - thats bad .... charging at a capacity of 10 amps is good - 2 amp to 5 are most trickle wall chargers for batteries.

Please help me. is it dangerous to use a power supply that give less power than what the amplifier draw ? I have a crappy pc atx rated as 12.4 = 7.5 Am ( 220 Watts total ) . but my car amplifier is probably 250-500 watts and 40-50 Am
@baileyrosmarin10774 жыл бұрын
mehdi Moro there is a key difference between power ratings in car audio and computer components. In computer applications, the psu you own will put out 220w, maybe 250w MAX to give some headroom in the event of power spike. In audio applications power is measured in rms or root mean squared. You should look up the difference between measuring at peak and rms, but if you tried driving your amp with that psu you would blow it up before you get to half volume.
@stevengoelzer4 жыл бұрын
A good rule to follow when re-using a pc power supply, Look at the AMPS Fuses. You need at least this much amperage on the Power Supply 12V rail(s). For example : If you AMP has 2 x 20A fuses you should at least have 40A of power on the 12V rails. If you had say 42A on your Power supply, It would work but I would not run it hard for very long as the power supply will not last very long pulling max. amps. It would be better to have 50% or more amps to spare. I think doing this will end in tears in days to months as best. Better to just buy a fosi audio BL10C AMP for $45.
