[Recorded: April 10, 2014]
Shuhei Yoshida is President of Worldwide Studios at Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCE). He has been with SCE since its inception and has been an integral part of the development of the PlayStation® family. Yoshida has overseen several successful product launches and was responsible for creating SCE's internal product development team. He was an executive producer for Gran Turismo™, and produced ICO, Ape Escape™, and The Legend of Dragoon®, among other popular titles.
In March 2000, Yoshida moved to the US to oversee product development at Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA). In May 2008, Yoshida was appointed President of Worldwide Studios and is responsible for all first-party game software development activities for PlayStation® platforms, including 14 studios across the US, Europe, and Japan. To open the week of the much anticipated PlayStation®4 (PS4™) launch, SCEA released an official unboxing video of a PS4™ starring Yoshida. Throughout the video you only see a dark figure with coffee-brown colored leather gloves unwrap the contents of the box. At the very end of the video, Yoshida appears telling the audience, "Greatness Awaits."
Mark Cerny, a true veteran of the video game industry for over 30 years, has worked as a game designer, programmer, and producer of arcade and console games in both the US and Japan. In 2008, with Yoshida's advice, SCE asked Cerny to lead the design of the next generation console, the top selling PS4™. Yoshida's instinct paid off. PS4™ delivered the best launch ever in PlayStation® history, selling over 4.2 million worldwide as of December 28, 2013.
We're pleased to welcome Mark Cerny back to our stage, this time in the moderator's seat. As a result of their decades-long partnership and experience in the gaming industry, this is sure to be a compelling, in-depth conversation about Yoshida's early life and career path to SCE, their work together, the evolution of gaming software and hardware, and the state of the industry. Please join us.

Those two guys. This is the reason I bought a PS4. It has personality and love behind it. Microsoft employees just aren't like this.

You bought a gaming console because of two men you don't even know, these guys don't care about you, they care about your money, that's how all corporations are

Darkryu256 just check out @yosp on his twitter feed. just the fact that the president of a major corporation exchanges with fellow gamers is enough for me to support
@Darkryu256
@Darkryu256 10 жыл бұрын
Zoop Mitty Why do you think Yoshida does that? Now I'm not saying he's some soulless corporate puppet or something, but really, they want you to feel a connection to them personally so you'll defend them. Kind of like what you're doing now

Darkryu256 Those two men are the reason the PS4 is so great because they are gamers themselves they're doing their jobs with passion. The former boss of the Xbox divison (forgot his name) was a real scumbag with statements like "if you don't have an internet connection stick with 360" this guy doesn't cared about what gamers want. Mark Cerny was perfect for designing the PS4 bevause has a passionate gamer and developer so he build what is best for gamers and developers making the PS4 the most awesome gaming system ever. Greatness awaits!

KeeseToast Couldn't of said it better myself! I believe the man you are referring to is Don Mattrick, the current CEO of Zynga. And Darkryu256, the fact that Yoshida has admitted in the past to owning both a Wii and an Xbox 360, and more recently a WiiU, leads me to believe this guy does care, he cares about what gamers want, and he cares about what the competition has, so they can learn from it, providing a better experience for you at home.

Definitely. I'm glad Sony has these people to help make PlayStation to what it is. A perfect console for gamers . I'm glad to own all PlayStation consoles ( not all versions like slims and other versions like that . PS1 and 2 are fat original versions and PS3 super slim and PS4 Pro . ) Love them all with one of the best games I've ever played . Can't get enough of them .

Pretty amazing that the driving force behind the Playstation brand's success, and the PS4's incredible start, was handled by Shu, Mark, and Andy. Three young guys who've gone up the ranks and are still pillars in the company. And Ken as well.

This talk gives me so much faith in Playstation right now. For them to learn so fucking well from their mistakes is astonishing. Even the original debut showed a change in direction for SCE, as they didn't just throw up the fucking console with a bunch of buzzwords, but rather laid out the objectives of the console. With the PS3, they realized that people don't buy a brand unless you define that brand. While I don't see it dethroning my PC, I can easily see great things coming from the PS4.

Usually I can't stand these types of videos like over an hour interviews and stuff but God damn lol these are like living Legends in the tech world. I watched the entire thing and an hour flew by like nothing . Can't believe what these 2 people alone have brought to the table for Sony . Being involved with Crash and Spyro and Gran Turismo as like starting projects . That's insane lol . Wish I can meet these 2 . I'm glad Sony has them on their team . Bunch of geniuses . Loved these past stories and I'm also pumped for PS5 . This was great watching after seeing that the 25th anniversary of PlayStation just happened 2 days ago . Great way to celebrate by looking back at this . Happy birthday PlayStation . You gave me so many great memories. And I'll keep supporting them no matter what . Can't wait to get PS5 as hopefully my first day one console that I've ever gotten in my life . I'm hyped

The reason PS4 is outselling the Xbox 1 is because PlayStation 4 is still a video game console. The Xbox 1 is slowly turning into an entertainment console. I am a gamer. I started out on the classic consoles my parents owned. Like Atari/Sega/Nes. Grew up with amazing games on the N64/Ps1. A couple years later the GameCube/Ps2 brought in the console golden age. Switched to Xbox/Xbox 360 and got hooked on their Fps's. Xbox was fun at first, but over the past 10 years I have grown to hate it. All the while I had forgotten my first love, PlayStation. I currently own a PS4 and I Love it. The future looks amazing for PlayStation. I can't wait for Project Morpheus and VR games!

When you think about it most of the things he touched turned to gold. He convinced Sony to make "toys" which is an underrated achievement considering the attitude of a a very prestigious Japanese Zaibatsu, successfully marketed some huge franchises, and once he became president the Playstation's fortunes turned around following a difficult launch. Thanks to Cerny and Yoshida PS3 and PS4 launches are day and light.
