Computers should get more user-repairable

We already have "smaller computers", they're called game consoles. What's being discussed it basically dedicated purpose devices and the market for those are always going to be a niche market and fail because the boundary of what they can do is always tapped out pretty quickly. General purpose computers will always be the bigger market for most people. I'm looking at using SBCs but those are for remote monitoring and control systems, I'm not going to be running a GUI or logging into them.

there is a point that we already are at that laptops are so small and thin they bend when movinge them, and thus break, and with most stuff being directly soldered they are not even reparable anymore, just "junk to be" so no computer should NOT get smaller, they shoud become more easily repairable and upgradable

I dont think the raspberry pi is designed for general purpose computing, the real benefit is the exposure of its I/O pins and the ability to use the pi for engineering purposes. It's easy to forget that people use these things like robotics and other systems. This probably not as easy to do on other computers.

8:24 True: I started out with a couple Raspberry PI 4s (doing some simple things like pi-hole), then I "upgraded" to a second PC for selfhosting and now I have 2 rackmounted "server" PCs with each having an RTX 3060 for AI and remote gaming (or gaming in a Windows VM, because of anti-cheat, but don't tell anyone). The rack is sitting next to my desk btw. (but I have fan control set up, so it doesn't sound like an aircraft and those are 4U chasis so I can just use standard PC fans for them).

I despise small computers, in my opinion it takes a lot of possibilities and fun away. If a "large" computer becomes too old for normal use, slap some network cards in and turn it into a firewall or router. Or shove some drives in it and make it a NAS. If you have multiple pcie and sata ports, you can do anything you want.

Matt, if you have carpet, you can put a cable under it around the baseboards, and tuck the carpet back under the baseboards. You can also try pulling just enough carpet back to drill through the floor (tuck the carpet back into the baseboard) to run a cable in the basement/crawlspace if applicable. I did this when I rented a place in college. Running wire in the walls can be easy or hard, it depends on your situation.
@TheLinuxCast
@TheLinuxCast 2 ай бұрын
Yeah, the carpet is going to be the solution. There's no way to crawl underneath my house and no attic space to go above. I could conceivably go through, but even that'd be a pain.

This is the only way to introduce new architectures. You've got a massive installed base to overcome. No gamers are going to buy your new CPU, unless the games they play have good emulators. The server market won't buy them either, because there are no software or developers for your arch (this is what _really_ killed the 90s high end, btw), people who want to learn these chips can't afford them. Aiming at IoT, on the other hand, motivates people to port things and make the support good. Gradually, they will want to do more things on said arch. Then you can start selling higher end chips.

Computers Should Get Smaller. NO !!! The smaller the systems become, the more difficult it is for third parties, for example, to reuse or repair them; there are even PCBs in components that "can" cause a total loss, which in most cases can no longer be repaired. Right-To-Repair should be important to all of us, not just LR °)

Excellent point. I have a computer that I've been slowly swapping parts on over the last 15 years to avoid having to replace it. The smaller ones I had where things were soldered to the motherboard are sitting in the closet now collecting dust. Best decision was going AMD, where I could swap the CPU without buying a new mobo. Next best decision was going Linux. Love LR, by the way.
@ERROR-413
@ERROR-413 Ай бұрын
@momentomori1747 Exactly, we should only rely on technologies that allow us to act freely, but those that do not allow us to do so should be severely penalised! OK OK, not buying the product in question is enough! PS: I'm only repairing and tinkering, but I'm also a Swabian! 🤣

I use an Orange Pi 5 8gb with Joshua Rieks Ubuntu image as my daily driver. I can do almost everything on it i did on my 4th gen Intel desktop but I use 3-10 watts instead of 200w while using the PC. I'm so happy with it

I don't like small computers too much heat in a small area is bad for PC's that's why laptop's sucks so badly
@clockblower6414
@clockblower6414 2 ай бұрын
with SBC's it's not exactly like they can't get any airflow! plus a little case fan for such a small low powered CPU will definitely do more than enough cooling. Laptops suck badly though, just companies obsession with making then thinner and sexier. I'd gladly give up sex appeal for better cooling

I think we will almost certainly see tv boxes/smart tvs like apple tv, and smart watches using risc-v within a few years. Apple already has developers familiar with risc-v because of their npus, and Google has already partnered with qualcomm to make a risc-v smart watch, and because of this it's likely we will see risc-v android phones shortly afterwards.
