My bios has the option to disable computrace permanently, which means i cannot turn it back on or enable it even if i wanted too. Probably not the perfect solution but better than nothing.

First thing i do when i bought all my thinkpads is to permanently disable computrace cause i will never be using it anyways. Had one came with computrace activated and because of that it kept crashing the linux partition and had to keep reinstalling linux. Good thing a spare mobo cost me just $15 for the t430u.

If you want completely remove computrace than willcome to Russia! Your computer bios will be cleaned comletely as well as hdd. Than new clean bios will be load - all for about 50-60$. No more comutrace. No more troubles!

You can't. I've heard installing Linux is the only way around it.

Argonova from what I've heard... Yes! This is the trickest piece of software I've ever come across. Which is why I I'll never buy dell again!

Eric I realized I phrased my question in a way that makes your answer slightly confusing but I'll read that as "Yes, reflashing BIOS will NOT remove it." As it happens I have this software on my Dell laptop, which is what brought me to this video to begin with. It currently reads in the BIOS as being "Deactivated" with the option to "Disable" or "Enable". It gives the warning that selecting either option is permanent and so far I've not touched it. None of the files mentioned in this video appear to be on my windows 7 OS so I can only assume it really is Deactivated but this still leaves me with some questions: 1. Will selecting Disable actually remove it or will it just cause the entry to vanish? 2. I'm not a BIOS wiz so this question might be really stupid but... is there any way an attacker (or say the NSA...) could activate this remotely from within Windows? In other words, without booting into BIOS at all? 3. Is there any way to really and truly get rid of it?

Argonova there is a VERY detailed video on KZfaq explaining the seriousness of this software. I'm no expert, so I suggest you take a look at it. It shouldn't be hard to find... It's about an hour long or more.
