Guys, this is why it's called music. We all have our opinions and tastes; no one is right or wrong. Hence why some professional sax players go the smooth jazz/pop route and others stick with traditional jazz. It's all relative, nothing is written in stone.

All of the solos were characteristic of who they are and where they come from. Smokin'.As for the key of the song, it was not the oringinal key, but I can do it there too, lol. Check out Ronnie Laws other version of this song call "Still always there" on the Harvest for the world cd. It's poppin!!

This is 1 ferocious cover of the orig '76 classic by jazz saxist Ronnie Laws! Where Ronnie's perf is soulful, Kirk and Co transforms this joint into a funk-flowin','5-STAR,fun-fest every-1 havin'a ball! *SideNote*-R.Laws classic "Always There" has been covered & recorded over 20 times with noteworthy efforts being "Side Effects" voc-version(a club classic), Willie Bobo's latin version & R/B band "Incognito". I even recorded my own version due to the mad-luv I have for this song!

I'm a sax player and I respect them for bringing what they brought to the table. Boney played more of a smooth jazz style. Kenny, of course one of my favorites, is coming from Jazz/R&B/Soul. LOL funny how he always sounds good putting his own harmonic spin on things regardless of the context. Kirk Whalum, wow he surprised me in this vid. I have always loved his playing too. He is coming from a R&B/Gospel/Jazz context. His tenor sound is so fat and ballsy lol. Great playing

history is time and context. this is a 99 jamming of people with very different backgrounds. if you listen to Kilson with Holland, Garrett with Miles, 70´s Duke, and Whalum & Carlton doing their usual LA stuff, you will appreciate that they got together for this date not trying to pass any hard core jazz message except that playing together, uncompromisingly, may be a great passtime!

Some of us got it and some of us didn't. Kirk killed! He kinda put me in the mindset of how Brecker may have approached his solo, inside and outside of the funk. Garret's tone was that of a tenor sax and he kept it real to his roots an R&B and Funky jazz feel. Boney did Boney and he has his place in the smooth jazz genre and if you listened close enough, he almost strayed away from that pen thang but went back to his comfort zone.

All so talented! I've seen Boney, Kirk & Rick B. live and they are all GREAT. This site is to express to our Artist for the fine job they do. They feed our hearts and soul and that means alot to me. I love music and songs with vocal lyrics I would always listen to although, STILL I would fasinate myself with the background instruments and to me niether is better than the other. what a privilege @ honor to see them live. When I buy a new CD I always get hyper coz I can't wait to hear it

thats right starr070 man. lot of ppl don't even know what jazz is about. if you try to define it, you kinda limit what you can do and how you can express yourself. that genre of music is naturally played "out the box" if you know what that means. Jazz artists have different signature style of play that describes who they are as individuals. "RESPECT THAT INDIVIDUALITY". (Jazz from my perspective)

For the best verison of this song youtube Side Affect "Always There" (made in 1977) The female that sang with the group is Helen Lowe. She married the former road manager for Heatwave James Baylor and now she is known in the Gospel music arena as Helen Baylor. She has had a very successful Gospel music career, but before she became a Christian and started singing for God, she sang background for Rufus feat. Chaka. Go to side effects "always there" for the real vocal verison

These are all great musicians. Remember to make a real statement it needs to be a different style or sound. If not ir sounds like everyone else and does not set you apart from the others.
