I don’t think it’s fair to call what Conan’s saying whataboutism. He’s not excusing America’s devastating colonialist policies by calling on supposedly worse examples that would make the US not look so bad, but maligning and bemoaning the horrifying reality that global powers consistently take advantage of relatively powerless nations. America isn’t exclusive or distinctive as a historical imperial power and comparing its actions to British or Spanish empire makes the scope of its impact feel even more brutal and destabilizing.
@urban7514Ай бұрын
@@CharlieQuartz But isn’t what you just said almost the very definition of whataboutism: responding to a difficult question by making counter accusations or raising a different issue?

He's going into a bit where he lists off all of these historical injustices and then looks into the camera and asks for an award for doing it. I wouldn't take as seriously as the comments inevitably will.
@CharlieQuartzАй бұрын
@@urban7514 It’s not a counter accusation when directly relating the significance of someone’s own crimes to a famously depraved example. Whataboutism would seek to diminish the relative crimes of the US by citing examples that are worse and putting them in their own superior category. Conan was explicitly setting the US’ imperialism on the same level as the historical crimes of Spain and Britain, elevating the perception of America’s effects to the nearly cartoonish awfulness frequently referenced for the other powers. Edit: For example, citing various ruthless dictators of history and bemoaning how they destroyed their peoples in direct comparison to Putin isn’t a whataboutism. It doesn’t raise a different issue to say he acts like Stalin, but elevates our contempt for him based on what we know about the other man.

Spain, unlike other empires, built entire cities, universities, churches, etc, in its Viceroyalties that were not colonies but actually part of the kingdom of Spain. They were treated and had the same rights as any other province of the Empire. American lands under Spanish rule were actually rich, they became poor after they became independent. BTW the USA started calling themselves "America" after they became the world superpower (after WW2). They unilaterally changed the established concept of a single continent called America and split it in two, so the country America belongs to the "North American" continent. The country was born without an actual name but a description of what it was, hence "these United states." The USA became an actual country after the Civil War.

He left out Russia, the Mongols, Persia, France, China, the Ottomans, the Mughals, the Timurids, the Arabs, the Dutch, etc. Also perpetuates the fallacy that imperialism has exclusively negative effects on countries when they can unite them against a common enemy (as the Ottomans did to Europe), lead to the importation of superior infrastructure, technology and political and economic institutions from the conquering country (as happened in many Arab, South and Southeast Asian countries from Europe, also northern Vietnam under the Chinese empire), and that many countries’ problems predated and contributed to their falling under imperial influence (e.g., the entire 19th century Muslim world, some African countries). It also ignores all of the countries that are better off today because US intervention saved them from communist dictatorships, such as South Korea. Not a nuanced conversation.

Trump doesn't have integrity on that issue. He only says whatever makes him feel good or look good in the moment. Weapon sales to countries like Saudi Arabia continued under Trump as they do with every US President. He had four years to get us out of Afghanistan, he never did. Regardless of the fact that the withdrawal was disastrous, the fact that there was a withdrawal under Biden is closer to "isolationism" than Trump ever was. The only real "isolationist" policy that Trump had was a counter productive trade war with China that did nothing but drive up prices while China continuing its unfair trade practices.
