Join us on Fantasizing About Fantasy Films as we reexamine the divisive 1984 sequel, Conan the Destroyer! This attempt to soften Arnold Schwarzenegger's barbarian into a PG-rated fantasy hero may not have achieved the same success as The Terminator, but it's not without its merits.
Discover the eccentric supporting cast, including basketball legend Wilt Chamberlain, Superman's Sarah Douglas, Tracey Walter, Mako, Olivia D’Abo, Grace Jones, and even Andre the Giant under loads of latex. Plus, enjoy a compelling score by Basil Pouledouris, despite some recycled elements from the first film, and excellent cinematography by DP Jack Cardiff.
While many hardcore fans prefer the darker, R-rated original, Conan the Barbarian, let's explore the hidden gems within Conan the Destroyer. Was it really as bad as its reputation suggests? Would Robert E. Howard approve? Share your thoughts in the comments!

If you were to see Conan The Destroyer at the cinema when it came out. You went away thinking it was a better movie. Probably for the budget and it was more flashy. But when you watch them now, Conan The Barbarian is obviously the best and a classic. Destroyer is still a guilty pleasure.

Not so. They have their strengths and weaknesses. I grew up watching both movies. It does seem popular to say that Barbarian is way better and Destroyer sucks. I think because destroyer was a disappointment at the box office in 1984, people have it in their mind that it's terrible.

Dude, Roger Ebert liked Destroyer way more than Barbarian, which he thought was boring. It's so nuts, Conan the Barbarian really is perfect. The original Conan stories predate the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings, which I think gets overlooked. The marvel Conam comics from the 70s are my favorite, they add in stuff from other Robert E Howard stories and add their own bits while keeping to the spirit of the original.

Wanting to turn Conan into a kid friendly franchise thinking that it will increase takings, shows how clueless boardroom movie bosses were and still are. Like if they tried to turn Alien or Predator into being kid friendly, it KILLS the franchise rather than makes it better by driving away the audience it was originally intended for, whilst ironically kids are more interested in the adult nature of the original movie.
@motherplayer
@motherplayer 10 ай бұрын
The sense of gravity delivered for all it's simplicity is why it would have a sway with kids and adults. As opposed to the sequel that's just a straight forward adventure. Just that one speech at the beginning alone about how the sword is the one thing you can trust in the world carries so much more than the sequel.
@white-dragon4424
@white-dragon4424 10 ай бұрын
@@motherplayer Yes, by making it kid friendly it lost all of its gravitas that the original movie was built on. Without its adult seriousness it couldn't support itself. As the movie "Big" points out, most adults forget what it's like to be kids, and as a result think they need wrapping up in cotton wool. Kids don't want to be patronised, and it's been a long proven fact that most kids like to be scared a bit. Of course you can go too far and show them a slasher horror movie, but kids (especially boys) like things like Conan the Barbarian, Aliens, and Predator, because it makes them feel like adults. I saw the original Conan as a kid and I loved it, and still love it! Same with Aliens, Predator and RoboCop (another one they f***ed up by making its sequel kid friendly). They aged well because the makers didn't think about ratings, but rather about the quality of the movie they were making.

I have Deathstalker on DVD, and yes, it was heavily influenced by Conan, which is likely why I love it the way I do. I like BOTH Conan movies, and I'm just glad that I was under 18 at the time, so "having the hots for Olivia D'Abo" wasn't as creepy as it would have been were I over 18. Let's be honest, she was a cutie and a half. But we really didn't know she was only 14 (she sure as Hell didn't look 14 in that movie) at the time. I think most of us assumed she was at least 17 or 18. Remember, we didn't have the internet in 1984. But "Conan the Destroyer" was indeed a fun movie, and it still is. I enjoy a lot of movies from that genre, and we played Dungeons and Dragons back then, even after it was banned in schools. That genre just sparks the imagination, and there's nothing wrong with that.

Destroyer deserves a lot more respect than it's given. The cast, cinematography, and comedy made a lot of sense. Brutes have wit too. Plus, the commitment of actors back them to train to fight, horse ride, and do their own stunts for a small fee deserves more respect. No one goes to watch a fantasy action movie for the acting Destroyer is camp, violent, and pg enough for all to watch and find something to like
@ColonelSandersLite
@ColonelSandersLite 10 ай бұрын
"Destroyer is camp, violent, and pg enough for all to watch and find something to like" That's kind of the problem with the movie. It couldn't figure out what it actually wanted to be. If it really focused down on being something in particular, it could have done it much better. All the potential is there. Skilled actors, special effects, decent stunt work, etc, etc. Take the comedy angle for example. Nothing wrong with some comedy in even the most serious movie. That being said compare the lighthearted humor from destroyer to the dark humor in total recall. Total recall's sense of humor didn't clash with the movie. That's how you do it. It wasn't a bad movie IMHO. Just not a great one either.

You can enjoy it for what it is. 1980's action sword and sorcery schlock. But the 82 film is probably the best fantasy movie every (I think far better than those LOTR films). The real heart behind the 82 film was John Milius. Red Dawn was the same thing... superficial action schlock, but really deep brilliant story telling underneath. And often misunderstood films. Two of my absolute favorite movies from growing up in the 80s.

Destroyer is fun. The tonal change is a little much though, especially if you don't know what you're getting into. Did NOT know Olivia was 14 at the time, I mean I figured she was young, but not that young. That's pretty yikes, but at least they have Arnie's Conan turn her down. Grace Jones was so intense, and yes badass. She probably is my favourite character as well, except for maybe Conan himself. The queen getting _penetrated_ by Dagoth's _horn,_ moaning, and then collapsing on Dagoth seemed like deliberate innuendo to me by the by. Knowing that there was a cut scene involving her getting a bit more excited about the statue makes me extra certain it was deliberate. I wonder if JoBlo will ever cover Kull the Conqueror, the Kevin Sorbo adventure. I think it's set in the same universe as Conan, though I think a long time before?

The 80s Conan influence wasn't just in movies like Death Stalker or Ator (or its sequel, MST classic Cave Dwellers). See also Rastan, Golden Axe and He-Man. Also, Thomas and Conway had been doing largely all-ages stories for Conan for YEARS at this point (it was a code-approved book in most cases, heck he even teamed up with Spider-Man), the difference was Conan was always a serious character. That's where this one kinda loses me. It's still better than all the various imitators.

This video was done well and I agree with many of it's criticisms. Conan The Barbarian had set a very high bar in my opinion that to even equal it's mood and quality was obviously very difficult. Even the soundtrack is very pale by comparison. It never occured to that The Destroyer had a different film rating until it was brought to our attention here. I mean it is obvious from the beginning of the film that they were seeking a slightly different audience, which is where the film begins to suffer in my opinion. Much the same as in Thor Ragnarok. Comedy should not have a place in stories of these two characters.

Conan The Barbarian is just so good, this sequel (which isn't great) can't help but suffer in comparison.

Obviously not as supérior to Barbarian which is a film that stands on its own. Destroyer is more kid friendly, yes, but still more edgier than other Fantasy films with it's tone and story. Although Barbarian kickstarted the genre, Destroyer is the one all these other spin off films comparé itself to That said, the film has great production design which resembles a lot of comic book pages The cast is incredible to match Arnold in Grace Jones, Wilt the Stilt, Sarah Douglas and getting Andre the Giant to play Dagoth? When the Dagoth monster begins to move still creeps me the hell out.

Yeah, Barbarian is by far the better movie - hell, maybe the 2nd best fantasy movie(s) made after LOTR - but Destroyer is fun if you come at it as the best of the Conan knockoffs. It's at least got a lot more production value than something like Deathstalker, and aside from the annoying thief, at least the characters are entertaining.

I remember this being pretty decent overall. I understood they were trying to market it wider, and that’s fine.

Great review on CtD! I never seen it in the theaters but I did watch it religiously on HBO. I also think Grace Jones stole every scene she’s in. I gave you a thumbs up for the vid until I heard you pronounce a couple of actor’s names. BTW it’s “dah-bo” and “mah-ko”. Maaco is an auto paint company.

I didn't like CtD when I initially saw it but grew to appreciate it enough. I prefer the original but this is still a good movie.

I slways hoped their’d do the Groo the Wanderer comics in live action. I also believe Steven Seagal would be perfectly cast as Groo. As Seagal seems to be that sort of charactor in real life lol.

Moral of the story is there was plenty of diversity in film, and strong female leads 40+ years ago. Only difference is now the films are patronising about it.

I think it's telling that every memorable quote in the entire franchise came from the original "Conan the Barbarian." Also, the way the original film combined action sequences with music, narration and minimal dialog makes it stand out from other fantasy and action films. ..... "Conan the Destroyer" isn't a bad movie. It's much better than "Red Sonia" or that horrible remake with Jason Mamoa, but it never came close to the quality of original.

While The Barbarian is better, the sequel is still a decent movie. It's shit on way too much. It's still a good 80s sword-and-sorcery flick and people need to see that
