Thank you very much, this was extremely helpful. Could you help me to understand why there aren't any rays that come in at a weird angle but do not strike the principal axis, nor come in through the focal point or center point? If I shined a laser from a spot above the center point at a downward angle toward a spot slightly above the principle axis, what would happen?

Can you please explain to me the purpose of drawing the straight line where the mirror is? I still don't get it. How can you draw the normal then if it's a straight line?
@Francis-gg4rn
@Francis-gg4rn 6 жыл бұрын
I believe it's because for all this math to work, the rays coming from the object have to be really really close to the horizontal axis. But it would be a mess if you draw the rays coming from an object so small, so you kinda zoom in and thus the mirror seems like a straight line. (a circle is composed of an infinite number of straight lines)

your line of action tells us that lightrays go into the mirrior and pop out of it on a different place and do not reflect at the angle it came in?

I need Help.Isn't the new cartesian sign convention for spherical mirrors states that distance towards the side ,where incident ray falls on the mirror is negative?
@DocSchuster
@DocSchuster 9 жыл бұрын
animesh pathak Who has established this convention? Tell me more!!! I have a video about sign conventions, and I'd love to adjust it if a new standard has been developed.
@allenwalker8657
@allenwalker8657 6 жыл бұрын
Its something like the distance in the direction of incident ray is taken positive and the distance taken in the opposite direction of incident ray is negative.Well thats pretty much it.For more you can search on google.

Because the focus isn't at the exact centre of the centre of the curvature and the poll of the mirror

Your lesson is soooooooooo cool! However I don't understand what 'line of action' is;( N why do we need it,too
@DocSchuster
@DocSchuster 10 жыл бұрын
It's the line normal to the principal axis where the mirror or lens intercepts the axis. It is how we manifest our assumption that the mirror is not very curved or that the lens is thin. Try drawing a ray diagram with it and without it and see which works better.

Are you sure there is supposed to be a line of action I never learned it like that. I think that might be why your lines never cross.
@DocSchuster
@DocSchuster 9 жыл бұрын
Victoria Guevara That's an appropriate question. You'll see lines of action commonly with lenses, but it's just my convention for mirrors. You'll notice here www.physicsclassroom.com/class/refln/Lesson-3/Ray-Diagrams-Concave-Mirrors that they show the mirrors as flat, which achieves the same goal.

For the example where you had the image reformed directly under the object, why do your values not make sense if you plug them into the lens equation? 1/f = 1/i + 1/o I'm assuming, since the object and image distance were both 13 cm, and since they were at the center, the center is also 13 cm. This means the focal point is at 7.5 cm. So 1/7.5 cm = 1/13 + 1/13. This does not come out to be equal .13 =/= .153

I used your method with the line of action but my teacher said the incident rays are supposed to reflect once they hit the curve, not the line behind it. I did that and now the computed value using the mirror equation and the ray diagram don't match. :((
@DocSchuster
@DocSchuster 3 ай бұрын
Time to bring your teacher to youtube! Show him/her that obviously the rays reflect at the surface of the mirror, but that the thin-lens equation assumes an infinitely thin lens/mirror. Hence, line of action! And then maybe you should become a teacher.
