Concert Photography in a Small Club and Venue Texas Style!

Many people find Concert Photography difficult in small venues. To be honest I started out in large arenas and stadiums so I do have to practice a bit in tight places. Check out this video where I detail photographing the Justin Russell Band on the under 150 square foot stage of Mama Tried, Irving Texas! Every thing may be bigger in Texas! Everything but this stage.
Welcome to my Concert Photography How To Series. I started photographing bands in bars. The first was a band that a friend introduced me to, a brand new cover band that developed and eventually got signed by a major label. I saw the "groupies" taking pictures and thought I could do better. That led to a VERY steep learning curve where I learned a lot shooting under poor lighting conditions. And this was using film and manual focusing. I did get better, eventually, and built a reputation for quality work. Small venues are still difficult and some smaller venues offer real challenges such as low stage height or ceiling height (and sometimes both at the same time). But it has been an interesting journey and I learned a lot that has effected other aspects of my photography as well. I enjoyed your journey into a small venue and how you dealt with the challenges that you encountered. But I still find the drummers the most difficult to get a great picture of. Thanks.

LOL I did everything backwards! I started out in large arenas and stadiums and now and again shoot in clubs. The last time I shot Justin they only had red and blue lighting. This time they added some green! Whew that helped a great deal. I shot a lot of Tri-X and HP-5 in the film days and never cared to much about the stage lighting colors. In the last 2 years I have shot in an alley, an old theater, a couple small clubs all with really weird light. I love the challenge. Oh and I shot in a library. Lighting is by far more challenging today. The next video I think I am going to show the challenge of Keys and Steel. Drummers are hard especially if you can't move about.The problems is getting to them. Horns and other instruments can be tough too. Thanks for the note and watching -R
