Why are concert snares 2x as expensive as a comparable sized drum set snare?

1) Most concert snare drums use snare materials (such as wire cable, coated wire cable, gut, synthetic gut, etc.) that are significantly more expensive than the curly wire most commonly seen on drum set snares. 1a) Many modern concert snare drums use multiple snare materials on a single drum to maximize snare response at different dynamic levels. Whether or not the strainer allows the player to dis/engage those snares individually or not, it can make the strainer and butt plate much more expensive parts. 2) Most concert snare drums use wrap-around snares, meaning that snare beds have to be machined into the bottom bearing edge to a high degree of tolerance. I imagine this can also increase production time and cost.

Is it just me, or is the field drum WAY too low?

I think you are thinking of field drums in a marching band. I personally hate the way marching drums sound when they crank the heads up and use kevlar head. They don't have any tone, it's just tick, tick, tick and they sound really cheap. I like the deeper pitched marching drums..
