In the 1960's, I was a mandolin student of a mandolinist of the Chicago Mandolin Club. My teacher had taught in a conservatory in Chicago which later was named The American Conservatory. He came to New York Harbor as a 14 year-old stowaway from Greece....Circa Pre WW l. He was most-brilliant and lived the "American Dream." He slept under a tarp of a lifeboat that hanged at the side of a ship. The cooks in the gally made sure he never went hungry.

Actually, my teacher was a stowaway on a barge from Greece at the age of 14 and as soon as he could, after stepping onto New York's Harbor, he knelt down and kissed the American Soil. His Greek native name was Dyoneeces Sakelarides.............. He also played a huge accordion and taught classical guitar in the conservatory. During the earlier years, a formal teaching degree wasn't required. The educators had to pass a proficiency test to really convey what they knew about certain musical entities as well as perform on their instruments He was my first guitar teacher and later he taught me mandolin while I was in high school.
