You know, Pav was on great form that night. But sometimes a conductor can convert good form to great. And that is what Mehta does here. This is an object lesson in great accompaniment as a conductor. There are very few today who can achieve this.
@copelandtenn Жыл бұрын
Agreed. Mehta was profoundly in top form. You can see throughout Mehta is in sync with LP, knowing LP’s capabilities and conducting the orchestra to mirror LP with their entrances, continuations, and endings. Absolutely exquisite conducting by Mehta from start to finish. Additionally, the way Mehta himself gets ‘into’ the high points of each aria with his physical and emotional presence is sublime. It reinforces his knowledge and connection with Pavarotti throughout the performance.

What a beautiful concert.The great Luciano Pavarotti was on sublime form, as others have said below. A wonderful programme of arias and orchestral pieces, the Egmont Overture and The Pines of Rome were a joy to hear too. A delightful film about Luciano during the intermission. All in all, such a high quality production, with the handsome and brilliant Zubin Mehta conducting the New York Philharmonic. The sound quality was pretty good for a 43 year old concert. Thanks for posting it here, a gem of a concert.

I was fortunate to have seen Maestro Pavarotti ten times during his legendary career, all of them when he was in his prime. To experience his voice from the stage was an experience I will never duplicate and his was a voice that has no parallel in history.

I only saw him once live. 18 years after this concert, when he was arguably in his prime. Even though he was near 20 years after this video when attending his performance, he absolutely brought the house down. He came out for five…FIVE…encores. Neither he nor we wanted the night to end. Indelibly one of the most memorable evenings of my life. Was dumbstruck that a voice that powerful and beautiful could emit from any human. Selah

This concert could arguably be the pinnacle of Pavarotti's career. He is in absolute command from start to finish. Notice how effortlessly he delivers fullness, depth, richness within each aria. His breathing is completely on point, and the apparent ease with which he delivers a stellar performance - is there any other where he shows this level of dominance and confidence...

You are absolutely right. I have returned to this as YT alerted me to something to do with a comment made on an earlier comment of mine. I watched it and thought, he was never as good as this after 1980. And probably, given the repertoire, he was never as good as this before it. Those open As, and the entire phrase taken without breath as the climax of vesti la giubba ...I heard him many times. And Domingo. And Carreras. And Bartolini. Martinucci. And Lima. And Alagna. And them all of that period. No one could use his resonances nor those of the hall like he did. He had enormous singing intelligence. In my view, probably in THOSE days, greater than the others. His technique was superior and the instrument the more beautiful. He did not cheat (eg PD on top notes, hoarse and cracked and nothing but touched, to be followed by an extended low resolution as if to cover for the shortcoming). Having said that, in the opera house, few (actually, NONE) could move you like Placido. He was more than the sum of his parts and no one, probably save for Callas, could convey suffering nor engagement with his fellows on stage, more than Domingo. But as for LP here - THANK GOODNESS FOR KZfaq and thank you to TODO OPERA for posting!

I dont know anything much about opera, learning, but this voice just stirs everything, so many opinions about his superior talent, diction, color, quality of voice, not to mention the personality , beautiful smile etc. One music critic said he was the best opera singer for at least a century. I cant argue, I cry when he sings, and weep when he stops. and this performance is stupendous and splendid,

@@todoopera4996 I so agree, Opera is the highest form of beautiful music, instrumentally, and of course the instrument of Luciano Pavarotti. I listen to what the conductors, music experts, and fellow singers say. Best operatic voice in a century, PD says, I am making my debut and here comes this divine voice, I never hear anything like it, and he makes it look so easy. Richard Boyngne (SP) says, there is nothing coming up that is anything like his voice, maybe there never will be. etc

Pavarotti was ok, but that baritone was something else! Seriously, he had a bona fide baritone voice, though I wonder how his high notes were. I just checked Wikipedia and discovered that he actually sang the role of the jailer in a 1981 EMI all-star recording of Tosca with Domingo, Scotto and Bruson. So I guess he was already in the midst of recording it, which is how the idea to sing in this concert arose.

Agreed. He did not have this kind of command in the 90’s onward. Here he is hitting everything and it seems largely effortless to do so. I must add, though there was a decline in ease of hitting them all, I did see him live in 1998 and he was PHENOMENAL. He came out for 5 encores. Neither we nor he wanted the night to end. That night ingrained and cherished forever.
