Concorde first flew in 1969. Still in service 30 years later, despite her age she never failed to win admiration. It was not just her awesome speed but also her elegant and purposeful lines that spurred so many souls.

Living in Ashford Middlesex, we watched Concorde almost daily make her 6pm departure to New York (when using 27L). Wonderful sight and sound. We were there at Heathrow to watch the four Concordes make their final overhead pass and landing. A very sad day.

As part of the British Airways family , my late father took me into one of the Hangars at Heathrow when i was just a child , there before us stood Concord, i wanted so much to see her , my dad took me up on the gantry at the side of her and lowered me down onto one of her wings , it was still warm and abit slippery as i stood there on her wing , i had special socks on , so as not to damage the paintwork on her wings , i was in total awe at the size of her wings , a memory from my childhood i will never forget , i miss her so much ! 😢

The people behind the design and build of this mechanical marvel are also as fascinating. RAF veteran Harold May, the father of Brian May of the band queen was an advanced engineer and draughtsman for the ministry of aviation. As well as designing and building with precision his son's iconic guitar the "Red Special", and also all the appliances in the family's home, he was part of the team that designed and built Concorde's landing gear. Unfortunately, Harold May could not afford to fly on it, until his son Brian May became a millionaire and flew him to the United States on concorde in 1977 so that he could watch him perform a concert with Queen in NYC's Madison Square Garden. Harold May never approved of his son Brian abandoning his Phd studies in Astro Physics at Imperial College London to persue a music career with Queen, however, after travelling on Concorde and watching his son perform, he shook his son's hand and stated "ok, I get it now." Brian managed to get his Phd later in life. His father would have been proud bless him.

Concord was ofcourse a legendary aircraft like no other. The aerodynamic and performance imagination of the engineers who build it at that time couldn't be found today. They engineered this special animal using a hand calculator and hand drawings. They were "truly extraordinary!" But there is a singular aircraft that mix my feeling towards the legendary Concord. That's because of the geniune "Queen" that fly like a cathedral of the skies. The B747 will forever remains as a "Queen of skies" to me not even the complex A380.

Something not mentioned and quite important was that Concorde could 'Supercruise' for thousands of miles at Mach 2 in 1970. To put that into context only the EE Lightning in the '50s and TSR-2 in the '60 could 'Supercruise' which is the ability to fly past Mach 1 without afterburners / reheat. No American aircraft could even do it and they were quite miffed to find out their F-22 was NOT the first to 'Supercruise' as they thought. The ability to do this at those heights, speeds and distances was quite a formidable achievement. To this day none can do it let alone flying 100 champagne quaffing people on board. An absolutely unique engineering achievement and possibly THE most beautiful aircraft ever flown.

@@Sirdiggar It was not loosing money. It remained profitable on key routes/markets such as London-NY, Paris-NY or Paris-DC. It was even projected to bring in more and more money for its operators with the booming air travel in Asia. Airbus axed the Concorde because of perceived profit margins, sustaining and older aircraft through its upgrades (Kevlar protections for its fuel tanks).

You can sipmly not compare 747 with concorde as you can not compare classical rocket with space shuttle. Concorde as space shuttle are ligue of its own. the only plane you can compare ti is Tupolev 144 and concorde is better in every way. Concorde was siply to advanced for that time.

Canada built the Avro Arrow in 1958, 25 thousand thrust engines Orenda Iroquis the only aircraft at its time with more thrust to weight ratio the, F15 was the first A/C in the 70s that achieved this The Arrow a delta wing bomber interceptor with fly by wire Internal stores for bombs the aircraft that was developed did not have the liberty to use the mighty Iroquois engines they were still in Development so the used PW American engines that were under powered Not much of a choice in the 50s Where do you think the engineers went after the Canadian goverment canceled the mighty ARROW this is the reason nasa went to the moon and Europe built the Concorde ,We Canadians built the dreams for every one, we invented the CNC and used titanium for jet engines the mighty Iroquois and it was a dual spool, before the Olympus who do think designed the British engine> Canadian Stop patting your shoulders GB we in Canada know how to build aircraft and we dont do it to support wars we are just smart Humanitarians
@1chish
@1chish 7 ай бұрын
I admire Canadians greatly but that comment was totally unproven and utterly uncalled for in its attitude to the Brits. And it didn't do the same against the French. I wonder why? On the thrust / weight allegation the Arrow was 0.825 while the Gloster Javelin was 0.79 and proven to be so same as the Lightning. And are you suggesting the Arrow would outperform the Lightning? No one was patting any backs in this documentary mate so wind your neck in. But where do you think Avro got its aerodynamic data from to create the Arrows delta wing? That would be the UK given Avro was owned by Hawker Siddeley and the UK was leading the world in the '50s and then into the '60s in both delta wing and supersonic flight research. The first operational delta winged jet was the Gloster Javelin in 1951 and was followed by all the British delta designs shown in the documentary. As for the Iroquois which first ran in 1954? It never flew other than on a test B-47 where full power could not be used so its all speculation. However it was not a dual spool before the Olympus as the Wright J37 proposed to fill in for Iroquois was a licence built Olympus engine which itself first ran in 1950. So to suggest Olympus was Canadian designed just doesn't stand up. In fact the P & W J75 was the first two spool engine but only by a few months ahead of the Olympus. The Arrow was a spectacular aircraft ahead of its time but was killed by dumb Canadian politicians and crooked Yank ones. We Brits can sympathise because we built the TSR-2 which suffered the same fate by dumb Labour politicians and crooked Yank ones. Just like Arrow all the tooling and jigs were ordered to be destroyed.
