Another step closer to the timber framing. This simple raft type slab was ideal for the timber porch, if we had done it in stone then I would likely opted to lay foundations. Mind you, with all the clay pipes around though, I think the less digging the better!

Tip for you, get a couple of concrete block or small bricks bedded down with mortar level with the top of the shuttering and then you can screed to then rather than messing about with a level. Blocks or bricks can obviously stay in the concrete when you’re finished 👍🏻

I've seen agilia self-leveling recommended before, was this something you considered, or not appropriate for this pour?
@jamesmarriott750

Having looked into this for a DIY garage base, I suspect the volume used on this project (half a cube maybe?) would make Agilia prohibitively expensive in delivery costs alone. :-)

I take you have to pour the whole slab at once, like you couldn’t do a couple of inches one weekend and the rest the next? So are there any other options for DIYers with limited time?

@TheRestorationCouple
@TheRestorationCouple 4 жыл бұрын
It’s not that smooth, just level that was the key. It does need to be pretty flat as otherwise you get small deflections in the insulation afterwards which is no good for tile.
@caramonmajere447
@caramonmajere447 4 жыл бұрын
If you're impatient, don't use plastic around the edges of your forms, or underneath for that matter. The water is held in the concrete unnecessarily, causing it to take forever to cure. I can only assume that you didn't have a properly compacted aggregate base to pour on.
@TheRestorationCouple
@TheRestorationCouple 4 жыл бұрын
The DPM is needed, especially as the oak frame will sit on the concrete.

@@TheRestorationCouple is the DPM for the curing process or as a damp proofing measure? Some people say its just for curing.
@mhailo1
@mhailo1 4 жыл бұрын
DPM should almost always be used to avoid damp rising through the concrete to your finished floor/walls, plus in the summer the plastic stops the concrete from drying out too fast and cracking. If no DPM needed, wet down the aggregate before pouring.
@shedlife1783
@shedlife1783 4 жыл бұрын

You should be ashamed by the state of your mixer, I have had mine for 20 odd years and it has done a lot of work but I always make sure it is cleaned as soon as it has finished the last load. I got mine from Screwfix as well, for a cheap mixer they lase a long time and the small electric motor just keeps going.
