This is the BEST comparison video that I have ever listened to, comparing dynamic and condenser microphones! You nailed it! 💯 So clear and instructive! I have shared it with a friend who experienced recording problems and now he understands that it's the fault of his acoustic environment and not his condenser microphone! Do you have any video on your channel that shows how to IMPROVISE, with common items (couch, bed, blanket, etc...), to reduce the echo of a room to the minimum without investing a penny, to optimize recording from a condenser microphone? I work with so many artists not having money to make a home studio room but they sound like singing from the shower sometimes! Have a great day! Kindest Regards from your friend François in Montreal, Canada! 🎼🃏🎶🎵🙏👍👍👍🌠

My general advice for home studio people like myself is start out with dynamic and work your way to condensers later when you addressed your room acoustics. For a couple of reasons. - Dynamics are cheaper in general when you consider quality. You can get a good $100 dynamic. Try that with a condenser and you wont be pleased. - Dynamics offer good variation in character and tone. You can get one that sounds round and warm like a shure sm58 or a far brighter sounding one like akg d5. Both costing $100 each. - Overall, dynamics are better for poorly treated or untreated room situations. Condensers catch flys on walls lol who wants a mic that sensitive in a shitty room? - Entry level condensers come packed full of problems. Because most companies aim for quantity in "entry level" gear, not quality. So you get problems like overly bright, overly sibilant, raspy, mids dont sound full enough. Then you either get your mic modded or have to get another mic all together. Story of my life lol Why not just start out with a good cheap dynamic and eliminate those issues before they even begin? - Entry level interfaces have incredible pre amps these days and more than likely can handle most dynamics without getting too noisy like they would when technology wasn't so good.

Nice video! I love my SM7. I bought it to have an alternative to my C414 XLII. Now I use both for vocal recordings I have the clarity of the 414 and the body of the SM7. And for dialogue recording only the SM7. I am trying to learn a lot in this quarantine, some courses and lots of videos. Tomorrow I am going to the studio to make some changes in my racks setup and I hope in a couple of weeks I can start recording again. Stay safe, David, and thanks for your videos.

Most side-address condensers belong in a studio and not the typical room in a home. They pick up everything. There are some small diaphragm, end-addressed condensers and electret microphones that seem to reject more background noise and reverb. The OC81A used in the video does seem to do a very good job, however.

My favourite vocal/speech mikes in studio: Vintage Neumann Gefell CMV-563 M7 Tube, 80s Neumann U-87, AKG 414 ULS, Shure KSM 9 HS, or EV-PL-20. In Ambient rooms or for band recording: Shure SM/Beta 58, or Shure KSM 9 HS in hypercardiod position. The latter mic is also a good stage mic, like the Beta 58, just giving more (warm!) power and definition to the singer. excellent mic for any vocals.

Honestly - I prefer the oc818 on all three recordings. the difference in room verb is soo minimal and I almost would say that the oc818 handle the room better than the sm7. but maybe my ears are tricking me because the oc818 has much "nicer" sound for your vocal. I only liked the sm7 up close with that typical bass heavy voice which in most mixing situations will be attenuated.

Fantastic advice here, thank you!!! You have a superb channel. Subbed! I do have a question regarding mics. I realise different mics have different 'characteristics', even within similar mic types e.g. condenser. If I am correct, this is all essentially reflected in the unique frequency curve produced on the recorded signal. Question: is it reasonable to say that we should always use the best mic that 'most faithfully' captures EVERYTHING about the sound source, and then, apply our unique EQ etc on the recorded track so that it best fits in with the mix? i.e. shouldn't we be making EQ decisions after the recording - rather than allowing the mic to do that during the recording? Maybe there isn't an 'ideal' mic that can handle all sources e.g. high sound pressure as well as seeing all frequencies, and allowing back/side rejection on/off facility? Still, if there was one, would that be 'the best'? (I was going to 'Like' this video but the likes are at "666" - I was too scared - then again, I did watch it! O_O )
@mixbustv
@mixbustv 2 жыл бұрын
Yes and no. This is a bit more complicated than it might seem because first, while it's true that frequency response differs from mic to mic, that's not the only difference. There is how fast are on the transient, how forgiving or detailed they are, and more so for vocals specifically, all these things should be taken into consideration when choosing a mic (which normally happens naturally, by testing them on a source, you don't necessarily need to know everything about every mic, you just need to have trained ears and experience, knowing not just how it sounds raw but how the recording will be affected by the processing, which also means one should have how the final product should in mind). Then there are two schools of thought basically, people who like to record as faithful as the source as positive and process later, and those who like to try to get as close as possible to how the source should sound in the mix. For me, the latter is not necessary the best way, in fact, I never use EQ when tracking vocals and I tend to prefer transparent mics to colored ones because it's hard to figure out how certain element will need to sound in a mix. Now there's the complicated part: when you hear a voice in a room, you cannot know how is gonna sound when you' record it, you might think a linear mic will give you "faithful" but the problem is you don't listen to a voice singing with your ear 4" away from it (which is where you place a mic), same for a guitar cab and so on, this means very often we have to "fake" things and color them to make em sound like they sound in a room in the recording. Then there the harmonic content certain mics add and more.. so as you see, it's not that easy. With that said, my preference goes for fairly transparent mics, balanced without hype in any given ranges, but I also like fairly smooth mics as opposed to ultra detailed ones, because of the media we record to (hd).

My quarantine goes super great, don't wanna be rude or stupid but for me it's really the best time in my life ever. Because I spend more time on learning all about sound production and learning Finnish language, created my KZfaq channel and now making my mixing tutorials step by step, because have been learning from Warren Huart and David for the past 2,5 years and now it's time to share my knowledge, experience and mixing skills with the world. I finally composed my first ever trailer music sound design album (been dreaming to do it for years) for a trailer music publisher, watching lots of tutorials and courses from: MixBusTv, Produce Like A Pro, Pro Mix Academy, PureMix and Mix with the Masters. Taking part in 2 mixing contests, and tried Plugin Alliance "Mega bundle" plugins for 30 days when usually a trail period is 14 days. Wonderful content as always! Quick question, a lot of people are saying that the Shure SM7B requires a high amount of gain. Would you recommend any specific interface to accommodate that? Apollo arrow; MK twin; Scarlett with a cloudlifter? There is so much information surrounding that it would definitely mean a lot if you could clear this up - all the best!
@mixbustv
@mixbustv 4 жыл бұрын
Yes it does require a lot of gain, of course if you're recording scream metal vocals not that much, but more then most if not all mics. Interface preamps might not make it, I always advice a Cloudlifter, I have the Z version which has the variable impedance (there's a video on it here), the only interface I know that can make it (because I have one of those too) is the Arturia AudioFuse 8Pre, because it basically has a couldlifter built in on every channel (I have a video on that interface as well)

However, since I still do have some problems in my (pretty small) room with early reflections and I don't really want to go for a dynamic mic I'm wondering if maybe the OC818 would be a even better choice for "not ideal recording situations" because on this device you can even change the polar pattern manually. What do you think?

The 818 and the 18 are identical in cardiod more, see my review video of it it says it they even match when stereo paired. They both have great rejection for being condenser, probably the best I've ever heard, however, with the 818 you can adjust manually and up to 5 bands individually, and you could go hypercadioid with the 818. Great video, thanks for posting it. I have been recording for years voice and guitar with a condenser mic, forced to record 1 track at the time as I needed to mix vocals different from guitar. No doubt for singer songwriter there’s no better way than recording voice and guitar at the same time. Do you think there’s an ideal solution in these cases?

Id say performance is the key. You can have any mic or preamp..and if you sing like me....it will still sound crap :) You dont need preamp, if you have good interface and record it clean. Later you can add character of any preamp... I guess..

Nice test! I have a question, what would be the best (as far as that exists) microphone if all you care about is rejection? I don't need full-range pickup, because my voice sucks, but it sucks even more when I record vocals with headphones for the standard reasons. I am looking to get a microphone with which I have the best chance of recording without headphones and playing music over my monitors, which would be in front of me (behind the microphone). Ah yeah, and if it doesn't cost an extreme amount, that would be kinda great too... Thanks for all your content!

When you say low level you mean low gain because you are very near the mike? And when you say high level you mean high gain because you are now relatively away from the mike, and then some more?
@mixbustv

Low level meaning the source is low level (my voice) the gain doesn't affect any of this, it's how loud is the source that excites room reflections and modes

I have a hot spot in my voice around 4950 or so - it varies a little with the key of the song. I've talked to a lot of other male rock vocalists who have a strong chest voice (e.g. Jeff Scott Soto) and they have confirmed the same effect - though people have different reference frequencies - but all are close - somewhere up in the upper end of the 4k-5k area. I have also seen times when this resonance can repeat at a lower frequency - down near 2K. When I use a condenser, I will sometimes have to find and notch that frequency. With an SM-7, usually I won't have any problem. I suspect this is caused by over-focused air flow which causes the bones in your nose to resonate in a way that causes a focusing of that frequency area. But in any case, an SM-7 becomes the working mic for me. I use condensers only for softer, breathier tunes. Great video - your analysis is always killer, David!
