The nuance in this short clip is deeper than basically any other video I've seen on the subject. Get strong THEN stay fit. Can hide weakness but can't hide being unfit.

Those who keep pushing for strength training as the be-all often neglect to mention the actual feeling of sluggishness and stiffness (that happens as a result of poor conditioning ) between recovery. In fact, I believe many "mobility" issues are nothing but signs of poor conditioning. Muscle pliability depends on the actual cellular health of the tissue involved. Put down the damn foam roller and improve your conditioning.

Very logically explained. I’ve been focused on nutrition and weight training recently mostly to improve my overall physique - and while I’ve developed size/mass, I gassed out super easily the other day while mountain biking - due to lack of adequate conditioning (and that was only riding downhill vs uphill). Love these quick training wisdom snippets! 💯

I'm subscribed to a lot of fitness channels. I'm interested in being strong and healthy but still like applying this to sports otherwise it just seems an end to an end. This really is the most thought provoking and, therefore, useful channel I watch. Cheers Will. Keep going, subscribers will have to come. Bob 🇬🇧

After 10 years of exclusively lifting weights, I stopped completely and practiced kick boxing instead. The first months I couldn't keep up with anyone in the group, even if I have good cardio and could run a long time. After a year I barely lost any muscle mass and got completely ripped. I could do any intense body weght exercise almort indefinitely. And when I saw gym bros giving it a try, it was funny how fast they realised they were gasing out and couldn't keep up despite all the bravado they had.

Aerobic capacity development should always be present for anybody especially athletes. The problem is most people think doing a bunch of gassers(basketball) or mile runs for baseball or killing themselves with lactic capacity work is going to enhance sport performance when the reality is very few sports use lactic capacity. Most sports require a developed aerobic base and alactic capacity. Doing a bunch of lactic work like most coaches have their players do is wrong and it will detract from long term aerobic capacity as well as eat into strength and power. The truth is you are never strong enough or conditioned enough but you cannot let either of those take away from your primary sport if you are an athlete.

There’s an idea going around that too much cardio, say playing a lot of basketball, will kill power gains in say jump training/dunking. Is that overblown? Of course I think there’s a limit, like you can’t marathon train and expect to keep your vertical, but I feel the complete shut down of conditioning for the benefit power gains is way overhyped.

I'm overweight but i make conditioning regularly at least 3 times a week -45 minutes jogging for 10+ years. So when i play 1 v 1 in basketball with a guy who is muscular and athletic he assumes i'll be slow, unfit etc but conditioning makes you stay on top. The regular gym guy who doesn'T do enough conditioning is done after 10 minutes and he's surprised how unfit i look but how can i run with such tempo. Conclusion: Go do your training, don't make the looks fool you. (P.S: I love eating, that's why i can't slim down)

My old friend was like that. I think he was about 6’1” 230lbs and we played a lot of full court basketball and never really gave a thought about him keeping up with us. I remember one time he got in a fight with his dad and he took off running and sprinted to my house which was about a 3 mile distance and that’s the only time I recall him actually huffing and gassed lol. So he wasn’t terribly overweight, but he was overweight but he had good conditioning.

What do you mean by "armor building"? I don't think you can train your tissues to absorb more force to a significant extent. Do you mean that by becoming more muscular/stronger you are able to resist external force by bracing?
@willratelle8027
@willratelle8027 Жыл бұрын
No by gaining muscle you just have more muscle tissue as a layer of protection
@HaydenGladstonePT
@HaydenGladstonePT 2 ай бұрын
I'm not sure playing your sport will provide the armour building stimulus that is needed. Look at the number of non-contact tissue injuries that occur in hockey and american football. What is this a result of? Is it Poor training mixed with the demands of sport? I'm genuinely curious of your thoughts here. It seems if the sport was providing the adequate stimulus and adaptation that was needed, injuries would be much lower than they are.

Ok but how long does it take to get conditioned vs strong? Do we need the athlete to squat 500 lbs? No, that would take a lot of time and resources with limited marginal benefit. Do we need them to squat over 300 lbs? YES! We should expect them to squat 300-400 lbs! That’s gonna take some time but not THAT long. Let’s say a year to a year and a half at most. How long to be conditioned? A month, maybe two. But they’re only so conditioned.

You got that right. Had hockey trainers who would put us through iron man type of cardio events. 7,10, 12, laps at the track. Long runs that maybe had an early stimulus for conditioning, but just dinked us into fatigue. That was less than 10 years ago at the Junior level. We're on the ice for 60-90 seconds max. High heart rate, high intensity, back to the bench. Recover heart rate, and then back at it. The absence of High intensity interval conditioning blew my mind, and still blows my mind that it's overlooked by hockey trainers today.
