Chris and Will are back and testing an outstanding new cutting tool, the Condor Bushcraft Parang. We put this tool through it's paces and discover what a chopping monster it is. The Good, The Bad (Not really anything bad), and The Ugly (the sheath) is covered. "GO! GET TO THE CHOPPAH!!" See? Even Ahnold wants you to buy it!

Hey Chris,a little tip for you: I just got the parang in the mail today and the sheath is now a bit different. The edge now slides on the seam/rivet side. It goes in very smooth (not tight like the old one looks to be), and since the blade edge doesn't actually slide on the cordura, it will never cut through. Simple yet very efficient fix to the issue you had. The sheath is now perfectly usable out of the box.

I live in .Westerville, Ohio, but my back yard is a choppers dream. After watching your review, I ordered one of these parangs. Hopefully it will help me tame the wilds of suburbia. I have 5 40 ft. ash trees that are dying from the emerald ash borer. Damn shame I don't have a stove or fireplace.I should have a bushcraft party after I get these trees on the ground. Beer and parangs? Sounds kind of dangerous. I'm ne to your channel, but I like your vids. You make em, I'll watch em.

I have a couple of Malaysian parangs of different styles and they're hard to beat for heavier clearing work. The latest toy is a 26" slashing parang that was quite expensive at 39 Ringit ($12) but went through ivy and brambles in the UK like butter. The shorter, wider style shown here are great general purpose tools that will cover everything from cutting to light chopping without straining your wrist.

It'll chop fine without a sharpening. I just always like to add a very small v-edge on top of the typical Condor convex edge.

Choice is good and everyone's certainly welcome to use the tools that suit them. I was a knife and axe guy but I'm building much smaller cook fires than I did as a kid and I find an axe to be overkill for the small stuff as well as less safe when I'm really tired. The parang seems ideal for converting deadwood into suitable fuel for a portable biomass stove.

That Parang style originated from Sarawak Borneo. Our tribe (Iban) use it for survival in jungle. The design is for comfort and flexibility in any hand that use it.

I actually don't mind the sheath, for what it is. Little pocket for folder or fire-kit. The death does need breaking-in though. It comes with a slightly bent inner lining which needs to be flattened so the fit gets slightly looser and easier to draw. Excellent review of an excellent an adaptable tool. Thanks Chris. Keep up the good work.

Functionally, yes. Pack Golok is nicer from a finish standpoint. The Bushcraft parang is simple, and it takes some work to make it "look" nice. (new blade finish shown in "Perfect Knife Kit?" video...)

You guys chop as bad as I do. Like a brownie. The blade could blow a big chip about every other hit with proper placement. You do split wood better than my grandmother because she's dead. You are right that it does appear to be an excellent tool. God bless.

Hey Chris, just discovered Colhan's channel were he uses his 18" Tramontina with a real bushcraft sensibility. He shows how using both a scandi grind and a convex grind on the same machete can be utilized to perform different tasks. He shoots in central Brazil where oddly enough he has access to both desert and jungle areas to challenge his ever increasing bushcraft skills. See his Bushcraft Machete (10 of 13) video you won't be disappointed.

I would keep in mind the level of chopping you want to do.. I live in central Florida, a lighter parang seems to work fine (we mostly don't need an axe down here in the swamp), like in many other places in the tropics/sub tropics.. It's a great chopper if you want to cut thicker stuff..

Good review although it might have been better if you could have had a running lawnmower in the background! I agree with most of your comments, including the sheath. I felt that the manufactured edge angle was too high and reduced it, though kept it convex. It made the edge, particularly at the tip, more vulnerable to chipping and rolling, so maybe Condor does have it right. Good, honest tool. Thanks for posting.

I've heard others complain about the grind as it comes from the factory. I think it's just too steep, but if you spend some time shallowing it out, I think it's definitely one of the best choppers on the market, especially for the money.

Cris, have you seen the Ben Orfords Eban Parang? It really looks cool, but I bet it would cost a small fortune.They are custom made in England. I already have a Condor Bushcraft Parang, like your Julie. I love this blade, but I thing it's bigger than it needs to be. I think I'm gonna cut a few inches off the blade, and round off the angle on the top of the blade.Then, it would be more like the Orfords, and I wouldn't get tennis elbow from swinging it.For what I do, I don't think i need the heft.

Any update on weather the leather sheath fits? I would DEFINITELY prefer this with a leather sheath. (and a nicer wood handle) I love my axes, but if I have to cut my way through Spanish broom, blackberry, manzanita and other thick brush, a parang would absolutely be my tool of choice. The fact that it could double as an axe or hatchet if need be is a huge plus. Great review. Thanks!

Great video. I trek the mountains and jungles of Southeast Asia, and consider both the Condor Eco and Bushcraft Parangs ideal for that hot/wet/rainy/harsh environment. The polypropylene handles are resilient and reliable, the tools are light, and they aren’t unwieldy for fine-tuned tasks (i.e. carving). The sheaths are not very good, but for the price, these hybrid knives rule! You can pretty much do everything with these knives.

Aww Crap. Now I gotta buy one. I'll have to see if I can delay picking up an Ontario Kukri (I'm freaken in love with that thick high carbon, US made, deeply curved and flat ground monster) over this beast. Personally, I'd give it a dragon name and hand/dremel in a cool "scale" pattern on the handle which would look awesome in that green poly (partially for grip, and partially for character). Best vid. I've seen on this blade. Ive been drooling for a while now, and scanning for a decent review!

Parang and Machete are from different parts of the world and have been evolved to deal with different types of Jungle the Machete is from a thick secondary jungle environment and is long thin (2-2.5mm ish) for hacking all day in dense but thin softish vines and shoots . The Parang is better in primary jungle is shorter and thicker blade (5mm ish) to deal with the harder trees chopping bigger wood and used as camp building etc for short time scales ie end of day set up generally I give parangs a harder Rockwell than machetes though still softer than a Knife

Parang is a malay word for machete. Designed by the folks living in South East Asia. It is the everyday knife for those living in rural or village area. Mostly use to cut thick vegetation like blady grass, slaughter and skin animal, and some "bushcraft" with bamboos and the like.

So this thing can chop like an axe eh? Thats almost as funny as Wranglerstar saying machetes are worthless in the woods. Apparently you have no axe skills because if you did you wouldn't be comparing a machete to an axe. There's no way a machete comes close to having the chopping ability of an axe. Those are nice machetes and do chop well considering their size but try to keep it real when your reviewing something.
@Wildwestwrangler
@Wildwestwrangler 4 жыл бұрын
Well now you sound like a dumbass!!! If you knew the origins of the parang, you'd know that they log just as big of trees as the states and don't use axes at all. They at the point of this video could have used a little bit of brushing up on their technique but that was 7 years ago. And I can damn sure tell you from experience that a proper parang can absolutely chop with an axe in the right hands, and I've been using an axe since I could walk, having been raised by generations of loggers and working as a logger myself. Logging was and still is the bread and butter of my family.
