In this video, I'm conducting the long promised fiber experiment. Many months ago, I presented in a video my project of weaving 8 dishtowels that will all have different weft yarn. My goal was to determine which yarn was the best to use when weaving dishtowels. And this is what I achieved in this video with the help of three different absorbency tests. #handwoven #weaving #loom

THE PATTERNS
For this project, I designed the warp pattern myself. For the weft pattern, I used the drafts provided in Anne Dixon Book: The Handweaver’s Pattern Directory in between pages 32 to 36.
If you wish to have more details about each patterns used for the dishtowel, you can visit my website.

I love watching your videos, I have recently bought a floor loom so I am on a learning kick. Just a thought for the first part of your experiment, use a scale. Weigh the dry towel, soak let it drip off then weigh it find the difference and turn it into a percentage, this would negate the deference in towel sizes. Also if you want to know the volume of water held, know that grams of water is the same ml. ie: 53g = 53ml.

Scientifically, I’d control for the yarn weight. So calculate absorbency per unit weight of the towel. That allows you to compare different weight yarns and draw conclusions about the fibers themselves.

I would have to try that next time!

Great comparison. The lab coat ensures scientific accuracy, I'm positive.

I am new to spinning with a drop spindle. I do think that the twist would effect the absorbency of the fibers. A tight twist would compact the fibers together so that less water would get in between. The twist alters the porosity and also the strength on a strand of yarn. What a fun video you gave us!

I love your videos! Have you ever used your rigid heddle loom for aparrell fabric weaving? If so, what kind of fiber do you recommend?

Thank you! 😊 I have not yet tried to make clothes out of my handwoven fabric. I would love to do it, but sadly, I feel like my sewing skills still need to improve a lot. There is a weaver named Sara Howard who makes all kind of clothes with fabric woven on her rigid heddle loom. You can find her on Instagram under Getweavingwithsarah I hope this helps 😊

I’m very surprised at the results with Cottolin. I’ve woven a number of towels with it and find them very absorbent. I may have to change things up now.

I was suprised aswell! I love my cottolin towels too ❤ There are quite a few margin of errors in my experiments and I didn't see much a difference while using them on a daily basis. I would definitely keep using cottolin in the future despite this experiment 😊

I think with both cottonlin and linen i really think age matters, linen i think improves it's absorbvensy over time, so that's probably why your true and tested cottonlin towels work so well!
