A note for the flashing green light. In Europe when it is flashing that means that the light is going to turn yellow. There is no such thing as priority when that light is flashing at least in Europe.

Good to know. I heard that in Mexico it means "slow down, the light is about to turn red".

@@ConduiteFacile Also when the yellow light is flashing that means that the traffic lights are off and cars must use the signs for priority OR if there are no such signs the law for priority applies(rail vehicles have priority over road vehicles and the vehicle standing on your right has priority).

Your illustration at 2:12 is very helpful. On my way to work I have to pass traffic lights where the speed limits are 45 mph (people often drive 55 mph) and 55 mph (people often drive 65 mph) and they absolutely terrify me. I got rear ended once because I slowed down in a left-turn lane when the turn arrow turned yellow. Although the insurance company said I wasn't at fault being rear ended has become my constant fear and I loathe yellow lights on fast roads.

The yellow light gives a big fundamental problem. That's giving too much trust on the driver's judgement whether to pass, stop or slam the accelerator to meet the three second rule.

Got my license 29 May 2021 but still I'm coming here to watch your videos. DRIVING needs 6 senses especially the COMMON SENSE. Here in AB, I haven't exprience the BLIKING GREEN LIGHT.

Wow, even though our lights are slightly different, this is the best demonstration and explanation of the yellow (we call it amber) light. I haven't heard of anyone getting a ticket for going through a yellow light here in the UK, but jumping a red light is not possible to defend unless it's a technicality with the ticket itself such as delay in issuing or wrong vehicle details, etc.

I have had to run a light that was almost red because, even though I was plenty far enough from the intersection to stop, I had a semi truck right on my tail, meaning the truck would not have had enough room to stop. It was an unfortunate circumstance because the semi was road raging tailgating me at the time of the incident.

I got my license in October 2020 & most of the time I struggle when it comes to this situation. I end up flooring the gas and going through it because I’m already going at a very high speed for the city.

My dad is teaching me to drive right now and he told me to keep an eye on the pedestrian crossing signal to give you an idea of when the light may turn yellow and it works most of the time but sometimes a light will say to stop walking and the light doesn't change for like 10 seconds more and that kinda throws me off.

Is it okay to turn left on a yellow light when the street has no left green arrow or blinking green lights ? It's hard to turn left when you've waited so long for opposite cars always passing by and there never seem to be a gap for you to turn plus you are blocking traffic behind.

Love your videos, but let me add an advice for new and learning drivers, as my instructor used to say: "Its your call to stop or go, but after keep on with it." Worst that can happen you speed up, see the lights turn red, brake hard and stop in the middle of intersection. Better run a red light than get hit from side (or rear if somebody follows you across). If you should be stopping he can stop the car with his clutch and brake, but if you slam on the brakes its done he cant prevent that.

before an intersection there is a solid line measuring about 30 feet, if you are going 50 km and you are at the starting point of the solid line when the light turns yellow, can you stop safely (that is, if no cars are following too closely) i always have a hard time with this one, i always go, because im afraid i may stop in the middle of the intersection but i am never sure.

A yellow light is neither a red light nor a green light. It means treat the signal as either a green light or a red light, whichever is _safer._

That green flashing light thing looks amazing. We need that here in Michigan where it snows about 17 months out of the year. Stopping distance is unreliable at all speeds on the icy roads here. We call them stale lights when it is just sitting green with no indication from crosswalk counters or anything else that the light will change. It's infuriating and easily the worst part about our traffic system, just behind the missing line paint and deadly potholes. Also, they don't put any consistency in the yellow light duration here. It doesn't reflect the speed limit, conditions or anything. Truly pathetic for 2020.

What are some tips on controlling the speed of the car when approaching traffic lights? I am quite confused on what I should be doing when approaching a green traffic light, going at 40-50km/h in the city. I am unsure on whether I should maintain my speed with my foot on the accelerator when approaching the light, or whether I should let go of the accelerator and let momentum take my car through the intersection, or whether I should start braking. It's often that the light turns yellow while I'm quite close and end up having to brake quickly instead of in a safe steady matter.

If it's a normal light and there are bo cues that the light will turn yellow, just keep going normally, foot on the accelerator, but always keeping in mind that the light might turn yellow. Soon I'll be making a video on how to control youre speed.

in Yonkers NY a yellow light means slam on your brakes The yellow light literally last about 2 seconds, ever since they installed traffic camera's. They favore you if your exceeding the speed limit because you'll probably make it through the intersection before it turns red, and they have to the nerve to call them safety devices.

Actually the flashing lights one is wrong Because the yellow is activated when the driver hits the warning button and the red is when the yellow is on and he/she opens the door.

So if I'm already in the intersection to turn left and the signal turns from yellow to red, am I still allowed to turn left or do I wait for it to go green again?

The law states that you have to stop at the stop line if you have enough time to do it safely when the light turns yellow. If you're already in the intersection and you stay there, you'll be blocking the traffic coming from your sides. So yes, finish the turn safely.

I always say that I hate driving. I think Traffic lights are the only reason why. I am perfectly fine on highways and stop signs, and everything. But where I live, you are always being tailgated. So trying to stop at a traffic light is always really tricky because you dont want to slam the breaks and get rear-ended. But you also don't want to run a red light. If I could master traffic lights. I think I would enjoy driving so much more.

Thank you for your Video. With the traffic lights functioning I think Canada left behind the third world countries. Most of the countries traffic lights has countdown not for pedestrians but for the Green Lights. So you know beforehand how many seconds left before green light turns green. I think Canada Quebec is really backwards can’t resolve this simple regulation as Traffic Light Countdown.

I'll have to respectfully disagree with you on this one. Having a countdown that lets you know when the light will turn green will only motivate people to "force" the light, meaning that they won't necessarily slow down if they see that the countdown is about to reach 0, and if there's somebody on the other axis that forces a yellow, boom. I think the best system is one where, when the light turns red on one axis, it remains red on the other axis for a few seconds before turning green. That way nobody knows when the light will turn green, so they won't rush it.

I don't know if this is also a thing in your contry, but where I live you can also see yellow flashing lights at night, when the traffic is very light. That way, you do not restrict the flow of the traffic or waste people's time by making them wait at red lights, even though there are no cars coming through the intersection from any direction.

Yes. We have that here too.Also, in some places, during normal times there is a normal red light, and at night, the red light is flashing, which means you only need to stop momentarily. Basically, it acts like a stop panel.

A dangerous problem for many is that, we find the crazy driver in the highway suddenly accelerate when we are at the final stage in the acceleration lane about to merge. Another scenario: when we are in two lane acceleration lane, there are already vehicles trying to merge on our left lane.

I always use the solid line, next to my car, that is to prevent other drivers crossing into my lane at an intersection....even though the morons still do when not allowed to, as "A Point Of No Return"....meaning that once you see an amber light, but you already in that zone of no return, must safely proceed through the intersection.....NOT going above the speed limit....but not below too. If before the zone of no return, you MUST prepare to stop.....most likely stopping before the light changes to red, and you must be before the stop line, ( if no stop line, then before sidewalk...if none are available, then before the intersection.) and many intersections have red light cameras, so speeding through an intersection is strictly prohibited.

I time traffic signals and please DO NOT base anything on the ped signals while driving. We're able to so much more with newer controllers than before and this type of assumption of fixed time operation isn't always the case).
