I am in a similar path as you. I work construction all my life due to early circumstances but have always loved everything computer related. When I was young, i had a knack for them and never got back to it. After construction has beat me silly, I still recognize my love for programming and logical IRL thinking that leads me to diving back into learning from scratch. Your videos seem to fit too well and let's me know that it's never too late!

Dude, I loved that you tackled the part of feeling like a failure and a fraud and feeling like you don’t deserve the pay. I’m actually working as a data scientist but I identify with fearing when will my boss realize I’m not that good. But also, I want a rise or even to go somewhere else where I can buy some more time to learn more and stop feeling like a fraud.

Hit the nail on the head. It can be so overwhelming to jump into a new SE role only to find a bloated, framework heavy codebase that takes about a year to understand everything. I think it's so vital as a junior to get as much paired programming time as possible. It's like having your hand held and really fast-tracks the learning to becoming independent.

@@keylanoslokj1806 On it's surface it sounds like a good idea and if you can pull it off great. You'll be all the better for it. But, freelancer means you have to be the expert at everything. On a team, you're probably working on a small piece of a large app. That said, while looking for a job, do whatever you can to get experience. Rather than wait around, you could try freelancing on simpler projects.

My university has a coop program (best coop in the world so you probably know which uni it is) but we have 6 terms and you can move from company to company it really helped me i started out as the single dev and and read so many medium articles that I had to get a membership. My second coop was at a small startup where I got to expand a lot and I had a great mentor show me those best practices. I dont know how people do it when they have to do it for a job where they are expected to perform without much coaching and dont have the ability to move every 4 months and try out something new.

I started a channel 2.5 years ago and did like 5 videos that really sucked. Scrapped that and started another channel just to make some video around cameras as I tried things out. Made around 25 videos, most of which have issues. Thought I was ready to start this channel based on the original topic and the early videos aren't great. Each video I release there is usually something I realize I would do differently right after it goes live so I make a note and change it. Takes awhile to pick up on the littles things. It's a lot like coding. You'll look back on most things you've done and see things you would do differently. Also, I now try to be efficient and make effects or things that I can reuse. For complicated stuff, I am happy to buy high quality plugins when possible to leverage other peoples skills as my full time job is software not editing. I've spent too much time doing those myself (mostly the animated titles though they still take tweaking to personalize them to my look and feel. but then I can copy it from one video to the next and make smaller edits).

One advice, Building webapps with vanilla JS suks and it will become boring. Just learn the basics of JS. How to manipulate arrays, objects, how classes works, async JS. And start working with framework ( React will change your life and you will love JS ). Don't bother with document.querrySelector(#BS). You probably won't use it. Also when you take the react course start building your personal app in parallel with the course.

Have you done a video addressing the long list of requirements on job listings? Where they want you to know like 5 different languages with 2-3 years experience in each and you darn better know how to speak Mandarin.

I've touched on it in a couple of videos, but I'll add it to my video idea list.

@@jamescross I'll track them down. One idea for a video is about creating your first portfolio website. Assuming you just got done with courses in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, what kinds of things would companies look for, things like that.

@@midknight3350 Am very interested in this question of yours about the very first portfolio. I quit my chemical engineering job to learn code. Everyone except 1 are telling me I am making a mistake. This is my second month into self teaching. Please @devsmak help us know what we must include in our first ever portfolio. Btw coming to you from way in Uganda, East Africa

Now rewrite it but for people who's English isn't the first language and have panic attacks when they need to present their work to investors.

Is the moral to hit it hard for 5 years then quit? LOL 😆

There will be ups and downs. It's not all rosy like some people paint it. But overall, it's been a great career.
