You rock brother. I am 57 and have been shooting long range since I was 14 growing up in NH. We had a lot of woods there but we always could find a few hundred yards to play. The scopes I used back then didn't have target turrets so rather tough to simply turn in the range. But, I almost never kept my scopes caps on so I could make adjustments with a dime. Rudimentary. And the scopes back then weren't as consistent so if you could find one that would shoot a box you were happy. My FN 243 is bedded (by me!) and floated (by me!). That gun is definitely subMOA with my own handloads. In fact I've only shot one load in that gun for its whole life...a reduced (slightly) charge of 4350 behind a 100gr. partition bullet. I've shot deer and pigs and yotes and tons and tons of crows and a bunch of woodchucks. I am now building a 270 Ruger on one of those Zytel stocks...skeleton stock...the boat paddle. Horrible float from factory but that material comes off nice. I put a nice Weaver 3-10x40 mil-mil on it and WOW what a different a good scope makes. Makes me want to change my scope on the FN 243. My buddy won't let me do it though...he thinks I'll ruin the mojo obtained with that gun over the years...he has been my wing man on many shots. Anyway...I really enjoyed what you posted and how you methodically work up a good rifle. I learned and that means old dogs can learn new tricks. The new rifles today are just amazing but the most incredible thing for me is the scopes! Wow...what an advancement in technology in my lifetime. Keep on shootin brother...you're good and you are a gentleman. The Armed Mariner

The engraved turret is all fine and dandy but the first time the rifle gets dropped and breaks the scope the process starts all over again. And that engraved turret becomes a conversation piece.

If you take into account shooting either East or West at extreme ranges, the bullet will hit higher or lower than expected because the earth is rotating while the bullet is in flight. The Earth is rotating at 1037 mph at the equator so how far from the equator you are will also effect the rise or drop. Shooting North or South will also effect the wind-age as well.

Mike - It's been 5 years, but I'm dying to know - how much did you sell that rifle for? It's a great video and inspired me to bed my own Rem-700, put in a Trigger Tech trigger, and do the analysis to get a custom turret. We don't have 600+ yard shots that are easy to find here in the Northeast US, but it's still fun to have a super accurate rifle at 300 yards and less. Thanks for the OUTSTANDING video!

I have 3 ARs, factory "govt spec" was 7, 8 & 10 lbs on the AR 10. Respringed, polished all the contact surfaces & got 3, 3.2 & 2.25 lbs on the AR10. Total cost for all 3, $19....

Yes. Good comment. Shooting at anything with a pulse further than that is not for me. If it goes wrong you're too far away to correct it. I spent years headshooting deer from a rest with a custom 6br and handloads - the spec was, no carcass damage. I did it long enough to be confident in my own ability and would not shoot beyond 250. However, if someone else wants to do it that's their business.

I live in Tennessee and when deer season opens on the 23rd of Nov-Jan5th in that time it can be 68-7 degrees! Significant fluctuations in the density of the air during the season.. POI shifts.. Shooting anywhere from 300ft-6000ft of elevation.. Lawd have mercy, dare I mention angles.. lol Who's gonna design the magical turret? Needless to say my data book has many pages.. ha ha very thankful for the kestrel 4500 but its just a tool not a crutch. Cool videos!

Buy their BR2 range finder, it compensates for air density, temperature and inclination for your specific load and gives you the distance to set the custom turret they made for you at to make the shot. They have made shooting a 1000 yards easy. The only thing you have to learn is wind dropping because your vertical will be bang on.

There is no "best" zero. It entirely depends on the ranges which you expect to shoot, and if you prefer to input solutions with your scope turret or do a manual hold over.

You should do this setup starting with a M700 SPS ADL or something like that bought from WalMart for about $275. Just a thought...
@basshawk100
@basshawk100 4 жыл бұрын
He pretty much built a long range economy rifle by doing minimal upgrades and getting phenomenal results from a factory run of the mill barrel. As much a we would all love to only spend $275 on a long range rifle it’s not possible. Remember rifles are like cars Chevrolet sells Malibu’s and Corvettes, the Corvette is far from a race car but it comes factory with performance and quality to work with. So these $275 Wal-Mart rifles are Chevy Malibu’s, there’s just not much performance to work with period.
@MaximRecoil
@MaximRecoil 4 жыл бұрын
@@basshawk100 Savage centerfire bolt-action rifles commonly shoot sub-MOA groups straight out of the box, and there are still models of those that sell for $275, for example: www.basspro.com/shop/en/savage-axis-xp-truetimber-kanati-bolt-action-rifle-with-scope?storeId=715838534 And that includes a scope, albeit, not a very good one. $275 is about what they sold for when I first started buying guns in the early 1990s, though that was the model 110 line (the less expensive Axis model line didn't exist yet). People spending lots of money just to get Remingtons, Rugers, Winchesters, etc., to shoot as accurately as a cheap Savage usually does straight out of the box, has been going on since before I was born. See this video titled "1,000 Yards CHEAP! Savage Axis II XP 6.5 Creedmoor" for an example: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/op2FjLuJ2r6YnGQ.html

@tiputipu777

Yes, that is indeed the problem with these bdc (bullet drop compensator) turrets, that they will only work accurately with the specs it has been made. Muzzle velocity, altitude, humidity, temperature. Thats why you still have the normal moa/mil marks so that when the factors are not the same that you used to do the bdc part of the turret, you can use your moa/mil adjustments and a ballistic software on your phone. Imo bdc turrets are a waste of time

Hard to imagine that you are really pushing that 168 grain (SMK?) over 3000 FPS. Did you ever actually chrono the round? And chronographs have become pretty damned reliable. Labrador, Magnetospeed, or the old trusty Oehler 35p. And why use a BDC? If environmental conditions change much, the BDC is off, especially at longer distances.

@TheBobfriday
@TheBobfriday 9 жыл бұрын
I would chrony them for sure. Considering they are the manufacturers of that ammo it's pretty spot on. But just a regular box of ammo is going to have some velocity difference. More so than if you were to load your own. I think its just good practice to chrony to know though.

My question is this: You can buy this rifle at any sporting goods store for a reasonable price. How much more of an investment is it to use the scope and personalized turrets that you mounted? If I spend $700-$900 on a rifle, must I expect to spend $2000 on a scope to achieve your results? Just wondering as you didn't include that type of info in your presentation. Otherwise it was a very interesting series of videos.

Get a rangefinder... Most modern ones (Leupold, and Gunwerks has a great one) will give you "shoot to" ranging and autoMAGICally adjust for air density and angle (inclination or declination)... then you just dial the range on the ballistic turret.... Plus the Gunwerks rangefinder will give you wind holds also automatically calculated for your current conditions. The profile in the rangefinder is built using the data on your ballistic turret. That is fixed as you know. Hope that helps! I have a ballistic turret on a Remington Model 700 Sendero and it works great. Personal preference... I know ballistics but the less math I have to do in the field to get on target and shoot the better my chances of success. To each their own though...
@justa3v619
@justa3v619 5 жыл бұрын
so the range finder will tell you exactly what to dial depending on environmental conditions? Say for instance his turrets are for 4400 ft elevation and he moves to sea level when he ranges with the range finder it will tell him where to dial?

And that's great but that turret doesn't take into consideration the changing velocity due to ammunition temperature or the change in barometric pressure due to elevation and weather change. Unless it was the exact temperature and weather conditions as the day you sighted it in, then that turret is useless past 500 yards.
