Fun fact: the original script had Daniel and Miranda get back together, and both Sally Field and Robin both agreed that was the wrong ending as it would give kids with divorced parents false hope. They made a pact to only accept the roles if the ending was changed to Daniel and Miranda stay separated but agree to stop fighting and continue to raise their children together.

I would say the ending is more ambiguous. They didn't want to spell out an ending as you said, but he changed his ways. Usually when a problem/problems goes away a couple can reconcile. She can't just stop having feelings for him like a light switch. We will never know there was a sequel going to happen, but it's not possible now without Williams. However this wasn't a kids movie despite children being in it. I know back in the day parents let kids watch these kinds of movies, but it's not really family friendly. Many horror movies have kids in them doesn't mean kids should watch them.

I'm only speaking from a show perspective. But I like to think that Daniel getting his life together and disciplining the kids, that Miranda and him slowly remember their love and get back together. But sometimes, the hurt is so bad that even if you forgive them, you can't go back because it's too painful. It's better to stay single and separated.

@@Trollberg60north When I saw 'Manic Humor Robin' on TV shows, I simply did not 'get him'. When I saw 'Dramatic Actor Robin' I was amazed at the depth of talent he brought to the screen. When I saw 'Dramatic Actor and Comedian Robin' in Ms. Doubtfire I was blown away with the range of his talent in a role no one else could do. He played two equally powerful characters simultaneously throughout the movie where each character displayed extreme highs and lows YET Robin did not steal the show or overwhelm the other performers. This scene was the most heartbreaking because it showed the joy (doing what you love as a performer) and the heartbreak (the personal toll it takes on your family and self). One of the subplots of the movie not often mentioned is 'what happens to a family when both spouses pursue their career aspirations while simultaneously try to raise a family'. The writers struck a good and honest balance with the ending and the DVD of the movie with behind the scenes videos is well worth the purchase.

In this scene, Daniel and Miranda's positions are very important. The backgrounds behind them is supposed symbolize where they are at this point. Miranda's background is the lit up house set showing that's she's living in a full, bright, household with the kids. Daniel's background is the empty dark studio showing that he's living in empty, gloomy world without access to his kids and is lonely.

This scene always gets me everytime. Whilst people argue that Miranda should have just let Daniel see the children in the first place, unfortunately in real life, it's not always that straightforward (coming from somebody with divorced parents, believe me I know). However, what I like about Mrs Doubtfire, is that ultimately, whilst Daniel and Miranda don't get back together, they both eventually realise that they were both in the wrong and have to learn how to get on and be civil for the sake of the children. So sad that Robin Williams is no longer with us...R.I.P Robin, fly high!!

Well to be fair we also see that Daniel wasn't the most responsible, he almost never cooked or cleaned, he just goofed around and made her seem like the party pooper in the eyes of the kids. They even showed that because Daniel didn't have a full on job or place to live that he wasn't eligible for the joint custody of the kids yet. Now throughout the movie we see them both grow and become better parents for the kids.

I believe it is not the point that he went through extremes to simply sneak back into the house, it is the fact that he changed, that he changed in a way Miranda always wanted and needed him to be. But Daniel can't be like that, so he created this new character to be that way without bending himself until he breaks. And yeah, this seems like mental illness, and maybe it is, maybe it is an extreme form of coping, which does not mean that this is bad. Pressuring your way back into your kids live is not neccassarely a good thing, it is often more a power play. But he gives up his whole identity to be the person the kids needed and since he did that in his own way, Miranda needed time to realise that. I also love the scene where the new boyfriend gets rescued by Daniel, who tried to play a pun on him but not to kill him so he realised he went way to far again. And the boyfriend instantly realised, that this man has given up his whole personality to be with the kids and all the terrible things he said about Daniel to Mrs. Doubtfire without even knowing Daniel. So they understand and forgive each other in that moment. There would have been so much to talk about, jelousy, how they both love the kids and the same woman, how they both did their best in absolute different ways to make them happy, how they both tried to get rid of each other and how they both have flaws to tackle. But they just say sorry and forgive each other. One would think they would rip each other apart over everything since they don't even have a bonding history together, but no. They instantly understood and forgave. Maybe that gave Daniels thoughtprosess another kickstart. I love how in this story, noone is in the wrong or a villain. Just people with issues and different ways trying to be the best they can be and for some, this is more easy than for others.

I think what's nice about this scene, is when they talk about how mrs. Doubtfire was a part of the kids lives, and how Miranda says that she brought out the best in the kids, and that she brought out the best in Daniel, the Daniel replies that that character also brought out the best in her. And what's nice about it is that even know these two people do not love each other any longer, they can still see that each of the other has very good and endearing qualities about them, which denotes that there is no real genuine animosity between them.

I think it’s probably because Daniel would leave the strict parenting to her, causing the children to see him as the fun dad and see her as the monster. Once she had someone else take care of the housework and instill discipline, she also showed she could be a fun mom. It’s all about the circumstances: with Daniel, she had to be the figure of authority to make up for his laid back attitude. With Mrs Doubtfire, she could relax some more and enjoy her time with her children.

Doubtfire gave him some perspective on the support Miranda needed as well as the skills to be a better more well-rounded father. I agree 100%! I hate when some people try to paint Miranda as a villain in the movie, even though I personally thought that her reasons for a divorce and full custody was justified. The whole point of the movie was that Daniel needed to change so he can be a better parent to his kids and for Miranda to see that and acknowledge him as an equal as parents. The best message that the movie displays is that always put your kids first and don’t let the bitter feelings of a divorce or break up get in the way when it comes to parenting.

He could sense we weren’t getting along and acted out in class. He wasn’t happy. After about almost two years of this I decided I was going to contact my ex and tell him let’s just drop all the bs and get along for our sons sake. It’s been a year now and we get along great. Our son is thriving in school, has friends and this year we even got together to celebrate his birthday with my ex family and my sons friends. He had both his parents there supporting him and preparing a great party. It may take time but in the end doing what’s best for the children is what is most important. So many regrets if you don’t. The thing about people (and characters) like Daniel is that they never truly change until they hit rock bottom. Here’s the difficult truth: they were both right, and they were both wrong, and that’s all because they’re too different. Miranda has had Daniels immature ways impressed on her for 14 years, he had a lot of ground to make up for and that’s why she couldn’t believe he would be a responsible parent even after the divorce, which in all reality is very likely: Daniel would have continued being the party no care dad that was his kids friend and not a father, she would have been stuck with making sure the homework and discipline and everything was done still just like their marriage. If Miranda didn’t put her foot down on things, she would have just continued enabling him. Yes, Daniel made some amazing growth, but it’s because he hit rock bottom to do it. Now all that being said, Miranda is also at fault: halfway through the movie when she comes to pick them up she can truly see the growth and changes Daniel has made, but she doesn’t give in because she’s holding on to the hurtful past and her pride. Yes, WE know she should have forgiven and let Daniel have joint custody at that point, but really how could she not think it was all a short term ruse? Her pride and pain was hard to let go of, but she did eventually realize her mistake and chose to forgive Daniel and move on. In situations like this, there are always 2 sides to a story. Neither of them are villains, they’re unfortunately victims of both their own doing and the pain they’ve caused each other.

What's interesting is, him becomming Mrs Doubtfire allowed Miranda to see the kind of person he could be, something she'd never have expected or had given him a chance to show her. By not knowing it was him all that time she in a sense got to meet the real him all over again. The man he became would have been someone she could have been happy with, he stepped up as a more mature and responsible adult. Daniel speech at the end of the movie acknowledges that they may never end up back together but will actually get along much better. So I'd like to think in the long run they will build a stronger relationship than what they had before. There are a few couples out there who are actually happier not being married than if they were.

@@charlieandthechocfactrules9186 yes they were married for 14 years, but Daniel never really understood what his role was. This is actually a very common problem for actors, we get so used to perfecting the roles we play professionally that we struggle to just be real people in our own lives and end up finding a role to play and stick to it whether it’s a healthy role or not. Daniel thought his role was to make his wife laugh and entertain his children when the role he needed to play was a responsible father and husband. He never really understood this and Miranda didn’t really know how to show him. By changing his role and becoming Mrs. Doubtfire, he was able to look at his wife and kids from a completely different viewpoint and was finally able to see what he was doing wrong. He needed an opportunity to see the situation in a different light and Miranda didn’t know how to give it to him. She couldn’t really give him the opportunity to be a better man because she didn’t really understand what he needed. This is ultimately a couple that couldn’t give each other what they needed cause they didn’t truly understand each other. I love that the film juxtaposed his finding his true role of father and ex husband with his perfect acting role of Mrs. Doubtfire. Finding the roles he needed in all aspects of his life is what finally puts his life in order.

"The only thing I know to be true in my heart is that the kids were happier when Mrs. Doubtfire was a part of their lives. She brought out the best in them. She brought out the best in you." "And you." I love how that moment, and the resolution of Mrs. Doubtfire getting the show and living on, acknowledges that even though she wasn't "real", this character that was invented by Daniel still had real value in their lives. Maybe it's a bit self-aggrandizing for Hollywood to send such a message, but it recognizes that fictional characters can be just as "real" in our lives as real people, depending on how they connect with us and what they bring out in us. The people portraying them can be affected and bring out a certain side of themselves, as well as the audience. It's a validation of Daniel's (and Robin Williams) job as an actor to create characters that provide real meaning in our lives. It's pretty much this scene and this moment that makes me really feel like Mrs. Doubtfie is the quintessential example of what Robin Williams did for the profession of acting, in creating that hip old grandma as a performance within a performance. And with it all being centered around him doing it to connect with his kids, it really captures the whole reason that we as adults perform for kids in order to entertain them and make them believe in something great or fun or magical, even if it isn't "real". The whole movie ultimately feels like a love-letter to what Robin Williams was all about, while also never feeling like it was just an ego-project or a just a star-vehicle. It all works so well, blending into a really great, meaingful movie that every family going through a divorce, or any major problems really, should see. Every time I come back to it over the years, I'm always reminded that this movie really was something special, and feel validated for it being one of my favourite movies as a kid, even though I didn't understand it on all the levels I do now.

The part where Miranda admits that Mrs Doubtfire brought out the best of the kids and Daniel, Daniel in turn admitted that Mrs Doubtfire brought the best out of Miranda too, takes me back to the scene earlier when Miranda unknowingly tells Daniel as Mrs Doubtfire that the reason their marriage deteriorated was because Daniel was bringing the worst from her. Daniel might have initially started role playing as Mrs Doubtfire to get access to his children but hearing that confession he knew he also needed to make it up to Miranda. So readjusting to be more responsible for the the kids, himself, as well and give Miranda the chance to relax and not worry for once, Mrs Doubtfire brought the best from everyone in the family. Just wholesome that even though both Daniel and Miranda were butting heads, they acknowledged the positive influence they had despite it was a time of hurt for different reasons.

This! I’m also glad that Robin and Sally advocated for Daniel and Miranda to NOT get back together in the end because it would’ve sent some really wrong and toxic messages to both children and parents of divorces; the ending showed that it was okay that they didn’t get back together, they were ultimately better people and parents once they separated, Daniel the fun parent became more responsible, Miranda the strict parent got help with childcare and housekeeping and they became much better overall individual parents. By the end, Daniel regained trust in being a reliable co-parent while still maintaining his loving parental role while Miranda was able to come home and just enjoy time with her kids without worrying about a big mess waiting for her while still maintaining a career outside of the home. I love their character developments and their performances.

Even though my youngest is now four and lives 40 miles away we sort it out so he stays at mine two nights a week ( fortnightly atm due to Covid but speak on the phone). I know we have so much anger when we split up with a loved one. But don’t pass the pain to the children. Children don’t need parents together they just need parents to get along and do anything to make them happy. Point scoring and using the kid as a weapon hurts everyone even if your the one doing it. So please everyone if you split with your partner and have kids don’t play stupid point scoring games do the best to get along for the kids sake. He would claim I've dishonored him, but it was really the other way around, and he would claim the things I had a right for were dishonorable. But what's really dishonorable is all the unholyness he's done in our family and between him and my mom. What's worse next to all that, he claims I made him out to be the heavy, and when he did it himself quite naturally, and yet even he made me out to be the heavy. He would claim that I set him up every time, but I never did, and it was the other way around. I speak from experience.

I think CTDawg Townsend is trying to say is that Daniel is the one who is responsible.

They both are, only an idiot would think otherwise, but sorry to burst your bubble, but if anyone is a little more to blame, it's Miranda.

Look I try to be fair. Daniel was irresponsible so I understand why She wanted a divorce. But after the divorce she did everything she could to push Daniel out of their lives which was cruel. Thankfully she Realized this and was disgusted with her behavior. In the end the kids will be better off with their father around and maybe Daniel and Miranda could become friends at least

Daniel reminds me so much of my dad. He's as childish and selfish as Daniel is. My dad tried to tell me the same thing here, that my mom stole me from him and that she let the judge lay down that sentence. Blah blah blah blah. It was because my dad was a monster and he'd beat the hell outta me like I was a goddamn home invader!!! He barely spoke 2 words to me everyday. I tried to be a son to him but he kept walking away from me like I didn't exist. Last I heard, he's in jail for sexually assaulting a coworker. So he's where he belongs now.

Now if only all divorces could end so well. If she wasn't happy wasn't happy with Daniel then maybe she should've just left him before they had kids.

@@LilyZerep I think she really did love him and even after splitting up still did care for/about him, but his lack if discipline and responsibility wore her down and she just got to the point where it became a deal breaker for her and she couldn't put up with it anymore. But had the issue been resolved rather than be allowed to fester, it could've salvaged the marriage and improved their relationship.
