Confronting the Powers That Be - Bishop Barron's Sunday Sermon

Friends, great writers, from Aristotle to Shakespeare to Melville, put a lot into their opening line, which often sets the tone for the whole work. This week we have the privilege of hearing the very opening of the Gospel of Mark, which, by scholarly consensus, is the first of the Gospels written: “The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ the Son of God.” In the manner of those great writers, this line matters a lot; in fact, every bit of it matters. And what sounds to us like familiar spiritual language was, in the first century, an edgy proclamation of the true Emperor to the powers that be.

Jesus has turned my pain into purpose. It’s been a tough three years. But I got so much closer to the Lord. As a single mother I’m struggling. Struggling to buy groceries struggling to pay rent every month is a battle. My health is also fading since having a heart attack Jesus heal me. But I trust your plan Lord. Lord please protect and provide for my boys. Both of my sons are autistic so they are challenging at times. Thanks to God my children have made so much progress now that I’m homeschooling them but my hours to work are limited. I will keep faith in you Lord Jesus no matter my struggles.❤

I always appreciate how Bishop Barron unpacks the precise meaning of words to help us understand how extraordinary they are. Truly, the first sentence in the Gospel according to St. Mark is powerful. Even if the Roman emperors wielded great power, and lorded it over Christians, nothing could ultimately be greater than the power of Jesus Christ, Who brings the best news of all, victory over sin and death. Let us rejoice!

Your references to time, audiences, & circumstances of Mark's Gospel & breaking down phrases as those Hebrew & Roman audiences would have understood, give added power to our/my reading this text in 2023. Bishop Barron, we share an appreciation of the importance of words. Thank you for opening our eyes to the implications of Mark's Gospel. Now the whole has to be re-read in the light of this introduction. Also, I begin to see why Titus & Marcus Aurelius - fairly reasonable rulers otherwise - were so hard on Christians. They very likely did not think they were divine, but to let the populace doubt it would undermine their authority. What a lot to think about! Since March 2022 when I chanced on your videos, being wary of KZfaq in general, I have learnt so much from you. I pray you may be the Vicar of Christ someday, though I will not live to see it. What a pity there cannot be, as long ago, a Successor to Peter by acclamation. May God bless you. 🙏🕊⭐

We run Bible study group every Saturday in our parish, and this is the style we use. Going slowly, sentence by sentence, trying to see the layers of meaning and also reflecting on how it was understood back then in the 1st century. Thank you Bishop!

In AA, we talk about what we were like before our personal tohoo vabohoo, what we became, and what we are like now, since our recovery. I'm grateful for recovery. Grateful that God gives me strength to keep trying to reach out to my family and retry to re-new relationships that were broken by lack of communication and effort from both them and me. My religious Vocation is not so important that I cannot or should not have a strong, healthy, good relationship with my kids and my siblings. God Bless you, Bishop Barron, and the ministry you have built to help others know Jesus and Love Him.

Matthew 17:11 He replied, "Eli'jah does come, and he is to restore all things;.." I wondered what the scripture meant to "restore all things." The note in the RSV CE says: e.g., family relationships (Mal 4:5-6) and the tribes of Israel (Sir 48:10) 🙏 🤲

Loved Jesus and the Holy Family since earliest childhood as family was devout...Remember telling my Great-Grandmother at about 3 of loving baby Jesus and hating the devil always. Oddly, something happened at that moment...Some kind of filling that just happened and I was clueless to know what that 'THAT' was. In time the other sacraments were attained as traditional and that filling happening with confirmation was accompanied by a snap...Like setting the lid of Tupperware and knew of being a true 'Warrior of God.' Then, fell away for a long time. After a lifetime of curiousity concerning the early Christians facing such horrors and gory deaths, finally reached a conclusion of what provided supernatural courage in the face of such demonic, sadistic horror about 5 years ago. Came to know 'The Virtue of Recollection' or the knowing of The Holy Spirit being within as the true strength and know THAT was present in the early Christians...God the Holy Spirit filling them is the 'Courage of Conviction'; is Jesus, himself. TRULY, A MIRACLE...

I love the background father, thank you for bringing DANTE and Socrates, and other similarities so we can share the splendour of the Gospel and Jesus opening for the New Testament, another type of spiritual journey, through celebration, compassion, forgiveness and transformation. When I was in Church as a child, I thought it watch the father from home, in the tellie or that would be a futuristic channel, that I'd a feel a bit guilty for not going to Church but that would be a sinful luxury, which it's in a way, indeed. Amen for the good ones, the bad and the ugly, whom are in the way.

The womb of Mary was the first Tabernacle of Jesus (the dwelling place of God) for nine months. When we recieve the Holy Eucharist, we become the Tabernacle of the Body, Blood, soul and Divinity of our Lord Jesus Christ. Thank you Lord for this wonderful Miracle and mystery.
