Add variation to your tumbao by playing the congas "Changuito" style. Instructor Edgardo reflects back on his teacher and mentor José Luis "Changuito" Quintana by playing and demonstrating this funky groove.
Latin Percussion LP City Wood Congas 10" & 11" Set: amzn.to/1Uz3kQK
José Luis "Changuito" Quintana is a Cuban percussionist. Quintana was born in 1948 in Casablanca, Cuba. As a child he played professionally in bands such as Havana Jazz, with his musician father, and with La Pandilla de los Cabezas de Perros. At the age of 13, he volunteered for military service and played in army bands, serving for three years, during which he also played in the jazz band Estrellas de Occidente. In 1964 he joined the popular band Los Harmonicos, followed by a year in Sonorama 6, and spells as drummer in Souvinir and La Orchestra de Musica Moderna.
In 1970 he joined Los Van Van. They created the songo, where a combination of percussion instruments (timbales, cowbells, wood blocks, electronic drums and cymbals) and hand techniques are characteristic.
Changuito taught other percussionists like Giovanni Hidalgo, Karl Perazzo (of Santana) and Ginaski Wop (member of Bardamu project)

There's an inconsistency between slow and fast demo. The 4th downbeat of the 3rd bar ... when slow it was played on the tumbadora but at tempo it was played on the conga. Muchísimas gracias por esta lección.

Edgardo got a question for you ,with so many congeros with their signature tumbaos, how is your method of remembering all of them. Also does it makes you less of a congero if you don't.''
@Eddysuconga
@Eddysuconga 5 жыл бұрын
Hiram, I don't look at them as signature Tumbaos, but more like variations that different people had taught me or I had figured out myself. My approach about it is: I have fun playing them in the different settings as they would fit best, wether a Salsa or Latin Jazz band, a faster tempo, or a slower Guajira or Chacha... As far as been "less of a conguero", frankly you and you only can judge what makes you less of a conguero or a "complete" player... Some congueros may be more "chop" oriented, and they seem to only practice solo rudiments, some others go deep into folklore... I love it all... Thanks for asking.

Looks like Johnny Rodriguez 70's tumbao ?

Hi Brulard, thanks for checking the video and your comment. I am not sure as of what Tumbao of Johnny you are referring to. If you have a recording of it (in a song or something like that) , please reply with the name or link of it. I would love to check it out... Many people have used slaps on beats One and two, before going to the Tumbadora...Changuito showed me this pattern personally in class in the late 80's, but that doesn't mean he was the first one doing this or anything... But I think what still is interesting is the fact he went to the Tumba on the Two side of the clave.... Which is also something not "unheard" before, as people like Milton Cardona (RIP) used to do that at times. There is always room for investigation. Merci!

@@Eddysuconga Saludos Edgardo!!! Saludos!!!

Hi Brulard and Tamboricua, I checked the video that Tamboricua sent, and yes indeed it appears that the Tumbao that Johnny Dandy Rodriguez plays there at some sections of "Canuto" is very similar, and also going to the Tumba on the "2 Side" of Clave... Well ... I guess the only thing to add is: it was taught to me by "Changuito", and I guess.... A Tumbao or rhythm doesn't carry a copy right "patent" .... Changuito never insinuated or said "I created or came out with this tumbao"... Neither he mentioned Johnny at all when he taught it to me. Just so you both know how much I appreciate and respect Dandy, here is a link of a video at a San Francisco Conga Tribute in which Dandy and I played with Eddie Montalvo, Armando Perazza (RIP) and others: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/j86fmJqEsK7PhHU.html. Much respect and thanks for the comments. Saludos.

Edgardo Cambon when I was taking lessons J Delgado in the 90’s he told me that Johnny Rodriguez was on of the first to play conga that way. When I met Dandy 3 years ago and asked him, he said he was. (Low drum on two). On most of his recordings he played that way. Listen to Cheo Feliciano’s the singer and the the albums Ismael Recorded as a soloist under vaya label. And others as well. On another note in 1966 Tommy Lopez plays that way on Some tune on Eddie Palmieri/Cal Tjader El sonido Nuevo. On Ismael Rivera’s De Colores 66-67 the conga player plays low drum on two side too. I read that for the De Colores album, that recording had Tito Puente’s band backing him up. No musicians credits though on that record. Awesome lesson BTW
