कांग्रेस से सियासत में कदम रखने वाली महुआ मोइत्रा धीरे-धीरे राहुल गांधी के करीबी नेताओं में से एक हो गईं। आम आदमी का सिपाही परियोजना में महुआ राहुल गांधी की भरोसेमंद लोगों में से एक थीं। लेकिन जल्द ही उनका कांग्रेस से मोहभंग हो गया। 2010 में कांग्रेस छोड़ महुआ मोइत्रा ममता बनर्जी की TMC में शामिल हो गईं। अपने तेज-तर्रार छवि और बेबाक बयानों की वजह से उनका कद पार्टी में बढ़ने लगा। 2016 में जब राज्य में विधानसभा चुनावों का ऐलान हुआ तो ममता बनर्जी ने उन्हें नदिया जिले के करीमपुर विधानसभा क्षेत्र से चुनाव मैदान में उतारा। करीमनगर दशकों से लेफ्ट पार्टियों का गढ़ थी।
12 अक्टूबर 1974 को असम के कछाड़ जिले में ब्राह्मण परिवार में जन्मीं महुआ मोइत्रा का बचपन कोलकाता और असम में बीता। जब वह 15 साल की थीं तो वह अपने परिवार के साथ अमेरिका में शिफ्ट हो गईं। अमेरिका में शिफ्ट होने के बाद उन्होंने 1998 में माउंट होलयोक कॉलेज से इकोनॉमिक्स और मैथ्स में ग्रेजुएशन की डिग्री हासिल की। पढ़ाई करने के बाद महुआ ने इनवेस्टमेंट बैंकर के तौर पर काम करना शुरु किया। तेजतर्रार महुआ जल्द ही लंदन चली गईं, जहां प्रतिष्ठित कंपनी जेपी मॉर्गन चेज में वाइस प्रेसिडेंट बन गईं। बढ़ते करियर ग्राफ के बीच उन्होंने नौकरी छोड़ने का मन बनाया और भारत लौट आईं। जहां उन्होंने सियासत में कदम रखा।
