OMG you just saved me literally days, weeks, months of uploading. I've had my NAS for a couple of years and it always puzzled me that I had to upload via my browser (chrome) which would vary massively in speed but which even at its fastest was incredibly slow and meant I had to simply stop storing RAW files altogether. I really cannot thank you enough.

Hi - I had issues with TM & eventually found your archive - which I am grateful to have found!!! I am eternally grateful for your work - I solved my original issue after 5 days of frustration!!! I sorted the issue across my Synology NAS which was fantastic. As an after thought I ended up switching from AFP to SMB on both MacBook Pros - one runs High Sierra the other Mojave. I created fresh shared folders and set them up as per your video. The only issue is that TM doesn't recognise or report the the instances of backup. Looking at the TM prefs in the app - it states "oldest backup none - latest backup none" - however the files exist on the NAS in the folder and I can see the TM files thru TM app on the desktop. Could this be the version of the OS system; should I go back to AFP perhaps or what would you suggest?

So since you changed backup locations it no longer sees those as backups. What you need to do is setup a new backup disk in TM and then select the share with the files. Then it should realize there is already a TM backup there and say “do you want to use this” Make sure after you backup to then “verify backups” and try restoring an old file just to be sure!

@@SpaceRexWill Hey thanks - I actually had set up a new share folder for each Mac. What I didn't do was log each Mac into the network under their own login - it appears that was why TM was not reporting the stats from the backups. I noticed when I had the DCM open that each Mac was logging in as the admin - so I changed it to individual logins and boom it is all correct as of this morning Queensland time Australia. Thanks for all your help and keep up the great videos!!!

hi - thanks for that - quick question. can my colleague ( who is already a user to the drive connect to this from his home ? Thanks Stephen.
@SpaceRexWill
@SpaceRexWill 4 жыл бұрын
To do this he would have to set up a VPN (if you wanted to use SMB) I would say that the easiest way for you do allow him to access remotely is using WebDAV. It more or less works over HTTPS protocol so there is little change that really needs to be done!

Not sure why but I’ve found AFP more reliable than SMB for my Mac / Synology setup
@SpaceRexWill

I do love AFP (better performance) but unfortunately apple has killed it off. I have also heard reports of Synology's AFP implementation causing file corruption, but I have never seen this firsthand

I am having an issue where, when I send a server path URL to someone else in my network, who has connected to the Synology in the same exact manner that I have, it mounts a subfolder I sent them to as a new drive. For instance, if I send to a folder on the Music drive, it mounts the subfolder as a new drive instead of just sending them to the same path location on their already mounted drive. Any ideas?
@SpaceRexWill
@SpaceRexWill 4 жыл бұрын
I would assume that this was from the two of you mounting the drives in separate ways. Is this Mac or PC. If it’s a PC you should both mount to a common drive letter For a Mac you can just do /volumes/Music
@daniel-nguyen
@daniel-nguyen 4 жыл бұрын
@@SpaceRexWill We are both using Macs to mount the drive. I can try that, but it defeats the whole benefit of being able to hit "CTRL,COMMAND,OPTION, C" to copy the path. If I do that I'll have to get the path manually every time, ya know?
@SpaceRexWill
@SpaceRexWill 4 жыл бұрын
So what is the actual path when you copy it? Is it /volume/xyz or is it /volume

@@SpaceRexWill smb://HAL9000/Files/Google%20Drive , that's the path. But if I paste that into a message, it creates a new drive called Google drive, even if I just do /Files/Google Drive, it still mounts a drive called Google Drive, so dumb

@spaceRex , apparently it is a problem with Mac OS, and the only way to get this done is to route the traffic via WebDAV? apple.stackexchange.com/questions/387216/problems-with-macos-path-on-synology-nas-smb/387266?noredirect=1#comment529477_387266

I'm seeing MUCH MUCH worse performance on SMB writes versus AFP. Using Aja as a benchmarking tool I get 2mb/sec write versus 108 mb/sec read on SMB. On AFP I get write speeds of roughly 50mb/sec (this is using the 256mb test file).

The Synology -- a RS819 -- is a bit underpowered but i have wired connections (currently just 1gb/sec but about too bond the 2nd ethernet for 2gb/sec)

Pretty sure I don't ... meaning I simply went into Control Panel -> File Services and turned off the AFP radio button and turned on the NFS radio button. No advanced features or anything else was changed (and no animals were hurt in the shooting of this test). How do I make 100% sure?

Hi, was wondering if you could help: My DS218+ on a mac has been acting weird: 1. when I delete a folder, it never deletes it on one go, it stops, tells me x file is in use, then I have to delete again, many times, sometimes 100's of times in order to delete a folder. (no files are actually being used). 2. sometimes it slows down my mac, so badly that I have to disconnect from my NAS in order to even use the finder at all. I even made a video of the problem, and sent it to Synology, but they did not reply: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bLeUrNKg1tO2c58.html

Honestly, I don't see any sense doing it. If you have small Adobe cloud subscription, just 1. drop what you want to edit, edit it there, then move to your local/synology folder the result. 2. Repeat. The catalog file is already in Adobe cloud, no need putting it to synology. So no value in using synology here. All that talk about high speed internet etc, also unnecessary. What is left, from what you said: you created a shared folder 📂 in synology, ok. Let me know what I missed. Thx.

Doing this just allows you to edit everything directly out of finder, meaning you don't need to download them at all
