If you want to connect more than one camera in Ecamm you could run into issues.
Depending on your system you may suffer dropped frames, poor video quality or even video not displaying at all.

Thanks too you Lee for helping. After shooting this I also bought the Sonnet to compare it to the OWC, pretty much the same. The OWC is much cheaper but only takes one card

Love it! What a great video. Thank you. I didn't know about PCI enclosures so I could use a card like this on my Mac. Very cool. I'm assuming the hardware solution you presented here works just as well with other software like OBS right? I mean the hardware is not specific to Ecamm right?

Yep it works with OBS, and of course you can add other PCIe cards if you get an enclosure that takes more than one card

Hello Alec, if you're never going to use more than 4 cameras and you don't have the need for any extra PCIe cards - maybe more thunderbolt ports or something, then the OWC unit I have is just fine, if you need more then the more expensive Sonnet which I've also linked too in the description maybe better.

@@GlennUpgraded The only PCIe card I've used is the Black Magic DeckLink as detailed in the video, there are others like Thunderbolt, Display Ports.

@@GlennUpgraded I was using a New Mac Mini with the M1 chip and it worked fine, I'm now on a new Mac studio and that too works like a champ.

How hard is it on the hardware? Does it take much processing power?

I'm running it on the basic M1 Mac mini and I have no problem at all with 4x 4k inputs. I know people running 12 cameras at 4k and they are happy, I've never tried more than 4, but I've had no issues or signs that the computer is working hard.

Hi Andrew, many thanks for the video. I now have the same setup, and for Ecamm or Zoom use (using Ecamm virtual Cam) I have no issues at all. The problem I have is that for using it as a Live video source for Quicktime, or Keynote is it not working. For QuickTime I see the camera listed in the dropdown when using "New Movie Recording" but when selected nothing initialises and no camera source is selected. For Keynote, the issue is different, in the respect that I have no option to select any camera. None of the Decklink sources show up. Not sure if you are able to test with your setup but I don't have this issue when using the dreaded CamLink 4K! One thing to note which I had conformation from Black Magic support, is that the driver for the Decklink will only support one application running at a time. Meaning that you cannot use it simultaneously ,for example if you have Zoom and Ecamm open. The first application opened, will use the driver and effectively lock out other applications. The above issues are not related to this as far as I have tested.

I tested it with QuickTime and nope it doesn’t show up, not sure why, I’m guessing it’s the Decklink Software, I’m going to see if they have an update

@@CourseBuildersAcademy I had a response from Black Magic regarding this and they said the Apple Quicktime & Keynote applications are not supported by the existing Driver. It's down to Apple to write support for the Decklink Driver. Maybe in a future iteration....

Andrew... I have an 8 port ATEM Mini Extreme ISO and a Sonnet Echo Express SE PCIe IIIe. Can I split all incoming sources on the ATEM to two DeckLink Quad HDMI PCIe Capture Card and use both? There are some features of the ATEM that I like (Multiview) and I want my cake and eat it too. Any thoughts...

The cameras are all plugged in the HDMI ports on the DeckLink card? Do you have a picture of the back of your setup?

Yes the HDMI cables are plugged into the Decklink card which is hosted in the enclosure, I now use a Sonnet enclosure which I do feature in this video at about the 5:40 mark kzfaq.info/get/bejne/a9Nhpcloq5bQfo0.html

What do you do if you have an older mac that does not have a thunderbolt cable ? Can i make it work or is it time just to bite bullet and upgrade ?

If I had an older mac and wanted to run multiple cameras I would use an ATEM Mini, and while this does a lot of the processing for you and allows you to get 4 cameras into your mac it does have it's downsides. If you have the budget I would upgrade to one of the new Mac Minis, even the base machines are really quick

What would be Atem Mini’s advantage over this except for price? I’m looking at this solution as I like that all camera’s are shown as individual source, not sure with Atem if cameras are shown individually. I don’t have neither.

Well funny enough I'm just filming a video that touches on this topic. On the face of it the ATEM Mini is the perfect solution, so much so I bought the ATEM Mini Pro ISO because I could also record all the cameras that were connected and not just the active camera. But like you mention, your computer will only see the ATEM as the camera and you can't see the individual cameras, and if you use ECamm you've now got to think about switching scenes in Ecamm and also on the ATEM, the second issue is the fact it only outputs in 1080 and I like to shoot my videos in 4K, I even shoot my KZfaq videos in 4K ( looks so much better ). So, I've a $600 ATEM that as never been used sat behind me. I guess it's a personal choice, but the ATEM doesn't fit in with my workflow and it looks like ECamm 4 ( soon to be released ) is also going to offer multiple camera recording.

@@CourseBuildersAcademy I made the same mistake twice ( Atem Mini Pro ISO/Atem MIni Extreme ISO) mostly I wanted a hardware only solution to live streaming without dealing with software and I was new to dedicated hardware for live streaming. Since that time I now realized that it is a big headache to play videos, load graphics and most importantly bring in live guest with just using a Atem mini. Now that Im more familar with Ecamm and the basis of how it works and what other products that Blackmagic offers your setup is what I literally just ordered. I just got the the Sonnet Echo Express 3 slot enclosure with the Decklink Quad. If only Blackmagic allowed the Atem Mini Pro lineup especially the extreme ISO to use software like the Decklink uses to allow the ATEM to show up as multiple devices in ECAMM that would be perfect and would have allowed me to save at least almost 1,500 to start and more in the long run to fully use my Atem in ECAMM with multiple separate cameras.

Hi Andrew. Have you had any problems doing this with 4K60? I've been having some glitchy jerky video probs, and figured it's because of the 8 lane PCI restriction in Thunderbolt 3 that reduces the traffic to 4 lanes of PCI. But, I changed so many software items right before I set up my sonnet echo express se iiie and BlackMagic Quad Recorder, that I've rolled back to my original baseline and am now building my way back to adding the Sonnett and Quad Recorder. IF you've had any similar or opposite experiences I'd like to hear about it. Thanks so much Andrew. -- Ned 😃

I've not run into this, but that said most of the time I'm either running only 2 or 3 cameras at 4k 60 or I'm shooting at 25fps - which I'm doing more of now.

@@CourseBuildersAcademy OK. Thank you Andrew. That actually helps knowing that you were able to do 2 to 3 @ 4K60. I'm still in the phase of needing to suspect everything LOL. My computer is a Mac Mini M1 16gb RAM. So, I'm wondering if I don't have enough RAM. I'm using 6 cams around a drumset--Sony a7Sii, 4 go pro 5's, and one Insta360 PZT webcam. I'm recording/streaming with eCamm.

@@nedzeppelin I've found that 60 fps isn't that big of a deal, most movies are 24fps and in most cases the extra HUGE overhead of 60fps goes totally unnoticed

@@CourseBuildersAcademy I've noticed my pedals and sticks/hands don't blur as much in 60fps. So, my students have an easier time seeing what I'm demonstrating. But, do you think it might be possible that my problem isn't 30fps? Like maybe something else is causing my motion blur at 30fps?
