Thank you so much for making this video! It really helped me to optimize my setup. I had no idea all I need is a simple hdmi converter/switch to upscale my old consoles. Like you, all of my consoles are hooked up to a separate box just to have amazing audio. It always surprises me how many people just play their games and watch tv through the speakers on their tv, it sounds terrible! Again thanks a bunch for the video and keep up the good work.

A little suggestion: set your TV hdmi inputs to PC or game mode (depends on the TV manufacturer) to lower to the minimum possible the latency between your input (the consoles) and the output (the screen rendering). Doing so your gaming experience will improve significantly!

Jimmy Burke I suggest you to change it to PC mode... This mode is even better because it totally disable any post process of the tv and it starts to work as a real PC monitor showing the image as it really is. Beware that most samsung tvs seems to have a working pc mode only on one or limited hdmi ports (usually the one that is called HDMI/DVI or viceversa)

Thank you for answering my questions on component. I was away from gaming for a while and completely missed that wave so I've been upscaling from composite. I'm also working out better audio solutions, but all-in-all, was glad to see I was on the right track with HDMI hook-ups. For Atari & Colecovision, a splitter instead of a switchbox works just as well for me.

It is great> nes, snes, n64, genesis and dreamcast looked WAY better than hooking up straight rca to my samsung lcd tv. Nice. Me being in Europe I just use RGB from everything (even RGB modded N64) before 6th gen. Then upscale it with converter like yours, but instead of composite to HDMI mine does RGB SCART to HDMI (superior picture quality compared to composite). What comes to 6th gen, for those I use device that upscales component to HDMI. Newer stuff supports naturally HDMI so no reason to go with any other method. Then there are usual HDMI swithcers and finally HDMI splitter for home theater setup input and other one goes to my capture device. All consoles hooked up once and with maximum picture quality. Note: I don't have a Dreamcast or consoles without RGB support. Obviously I'd hook up Dreamcast via VGA to HDMI and anything not capable of doing real RGB (no mods available or just composite or RF) it would just those connection I guess, fortunately I don't have any desire to play them.

Great tutorial and some great tips here. Two questions: 1.)the xbox 360 - why use component on that and not HDMI? HDMI looks so much clearer on that system. 2.) There is a kickstarter for a component cable for the Dreamcast -- would you consider swapping to that once available? Reason I ask, there are many games on the dreamcast that do not support VGA output and trying to run them results in the image looking like shit or not showing up at all. Keep up the great work MJR!!!
@RareDivers
@RareDivers 9 жыл бұрын
The Jimbo Channel Can the Dreamcast even support component without modification? For the few games that dont use VGA, just use RGB. The quality is still amazing. Cant record gameplay with HDMI. Component allows gameplay to be recorded, and still be in HD. Otherwise, yes, HDMI is still way superior to component.
@MrJimbofox
@MrJimbofox 9 жыл бұрын
Vanguard According to the kickstarter for the new cable, yes it can. I actually was not aware you couldn't record gameplay with HDMI out. That's good to know since I was planning on using my Retron 5 for gameplay vids but I guess that's not happening now. Damn.
@MrJimbofox
@MrJimbofox 9 жыл бұрын
Vanguard What do you mean by RGB for the dreamcast? Are you talking about composite?
@RareDivers
@RareDivers 9 жыл бұрын
The Jimbo Channel RGB is a "mode" within VGA. It is basically non progressive. It uses the physical VGA cable, but you need a VGA box to switch between VGA and RGB mode. RGB is also present in Scart cables, called RGB scart. A European format that is the best quality for multiple 4th and 5th gen consoles. All in all, get a VGA box called the "Toro DC VGA Box" From beharbros. By far the best quality VGA box on the market. Does absolutely everything, and the build quality is top notch. As for the HDMI thing, there are devices called "HDMI strippers" that allow gameplay to be recorded. But I am unsure of the legality of them. :P Interesting to hear about the Dreamcast component Kickstarter. Thanks!

Okay I could really use some help on upscaling or getting my N64, GameCube and PS2 to output or display in 1080p Native Stretched. I just need these systems looking as good as humanly possible. Is modding them to output 1080p the only way? Everytime I see an amazing video that showcases N64 games in high definition with no pixelation and blurriness its always through emulation. I own all of these old consoles and want to play them with the cartridges and with the controllers. Is there any way I can get these game systems displaying legitatmately good displays? I've seen upscalers that apparently do a little improvement but man that shit can still look blocky as hell. Im not sure if its a settings issue or if its truly impossible to get something like Perfect Dark displaying like pc emulation only through the actual console with the actual physical game.

Vanguard scart and svideo are pretty much the same, svhs format itself is expensive. By the way I tried years ago the advantages between composite and scart with my PSone, after I bought a real scart cable for it: gamma is now correct and not too high, colors are vibriant and definition and clarity way higher, just as you expect from an rgb connection.
@RareDivers
@RareDivers 9 жыл бұрын
MasterControl90 Scart is a very powerful format. Although I would have to disagree on S-Video and Scart being the same. S-Video compresses the image into 2 pins, while Scart uses something like 16 pins to separate color, and detail. I am by no means an expert in this stuff. The technical, and scientific data is somewhat beyond me, but from what I have experienced, my eyeballs like Scart more. :P Sucks that S-VHS is so expensive, i'd jump right on it!

marc richards Exactly, and MetalJesus has hdtvs with hdmi ports of course, otherwise logically he wouldn't have bought and used hdmi adaptors for older consoles. Also Ps3 hdmi output has always been brilliant since the fat models. The early Xbox 360s without hdmi port are the worst ever (firstly easy RRoD and then also unreliable dvd drives, besides the absence or the little capacity of the hard disks), so I don't see the sense of still use one of them with the last stingray model which is superb and not expensive at all by now. ;-)

Throw away all those composite cables and go to SCART. Get a SCART to hdmi adapter and buy the appropriate SCART cable for each system. The quality is stunning. Although a few systems don't support SCART, so the best you can do is RGB, or at the bare minimum, S-Video. Plus, systems like the Amiga CD32 can then be used on NTSC TVs, because the adapter bypasses the region coding and 50hz issues!

Am I right in that?

What a nice setup. Everything looks clean and well organized. I'm lucky in that I have an Atari 2600 (heavy sixer model) modified for RCA output. The video signal looks way sharper than the standard RF signal, and it's a hell of a lot easier to hook up to modern TVs.

Hampage just plug the yellow into the green and the red and white into the farthest red and white in the same row from the green. Turn TV to component and done

I've been converting everything to RGB (SCART) and Component for a few years now (down to just the GameCube, used for GB/C/A games, needing the upgrade from S-Video). A nice improvement over composite for anyone looking to upgrade their retro game setup.

Those composite switchers are really cool. I may have to buy some so i don't have to constantly hook up and unhook each console that i feel like playing.

Really useful info. I've been setting up a gaming room and was wondering best way to connect everything up. With trial and error I have basically come up with the same setup as yours. The 1080p upscaler works great, much better than I thought it would on a 50" plasma, would be good for other people to see difference with and without upscaler so maybe you can make a video on this. Keep up the great vids.

I use a Joytech switcher. Has 7 inputs and supports component on all inputs except the front and many of the inputs also support optical and Ethernet switching too. Awesome for those 2000-2008 consoles.

thanks for this! i am looking to start collecting nintendo consoles and this is a great way to play these on my modern tvs. it's a little on the pricey side for everything i'd need (i bought some power strips and extra hdmi cables on top of everything else) but it'll all be worth it in the end. very excited to set up my nintendo gaming area in the upcoming week! :D

I don't just have one mighty game room to rule them all :-) - I split my collection into two rooms - the consoles that have HDMI or at least Component (YPbPr) output are hooked up to a HDTV in the family living room downstairs - that's my PS2 & PS3, and my brothers Wii & Xbox 360. all older consoles are connected to a SDTV plasma in one of my rooms upstairs - as of now it is PS1, saturn, mega drive and NES. this room is also the home of my hifi system with tape deck and turntable driving a pair of JBL "control one" speakers and a 15" subwoofer for some more low-end so basically I'm running a two-TV setup just like you but with each TV in a separate room.
