To be fair to Tim, the climate in the west of Ireland seems to make the battle against rust quite a difficult one. It only seems to take a couple of months for everything Tim owns to become rusty and covered in cobwebs!

I love the banter between the pair of you, I have a very similar bandsaw with a pair of matching curly spoke blade wheels, I spotted a pile of castings in a local farm yard and the owner said it was going for scrap, I did not have a need for it but it would have broken my heart to see it scrapped so I saved it and preserved it for future owners.

One nice thing about using a car wheel as a pulley is that you've done a lot of the work needed to adapt car brakes to it as well. An old drum brake and the hand brake cable would be a really simple and effective brake on that shaft, and hopefully an inexpensive one as well. Great job, Tim!

Care should always be taken when cutting alloy rims, since they are injection molded a side effect of the process is differential shrinkage and cooling in the mold this means that there is a massive amount of tensile force since the liquid alloy cools from different spots pulling the rest of the material taught it makes the rims incredibly strong but very brittle.

That band saw is massive. Such a cool unit! If the belt slips when you have a blade on it just move the machine forward a bit more. Adjust as needed. Cool idea on the moving the belt up to the larger diameter!

I've seen belt shifters like this before in old factories and mills that power equipment off a common lineshaft. Obviously you can't shut down the entire shop just to depower one tool when other workers are still hard at it, so popping the belt over to an unfixed pulley on the shaft allows the shaft to overrun the wheel and the individual machine comes to a stop.

I still own 50 years old stationary electric motor with broad pully. It was built to run "anything" by broad leather belt. We used it mostly to crush wheat and corn for animals and to run huge fan, to throw hay up in barn by pipes. Now, as I see, this has quite long momentum, till stops the blade. That could be very risky. Please mind some very strong emergency break, to stop saw belt as quick as possible. And if you want to add more friction power to belt, use bees wax or resins to pully. Good work, good good.

Will, I am the same way with my pops. Not that Tim is your da, I actually have no idea how you two are related or why you only hang out one afternoon a week. I'd happily listen to your shared banter a good deal more. When it's dad's project we're doing it seems like tidying the thing up before seeing if it works is never the order of operations. It would be nice to clean the rust completely off the sliding bits. The grease will help but the iron oxide is somewhat abrasive. But it's outdoors and you may not be moving those parts very often... maybe its fine as it is.

Interesting video. My local scrap metal yards have pallets of old flat belt pulleys. The prices are only a little high. Flat belts have the advantage of slipping if something jams. Good Luck, Rick

@@wayoutwest-workshopstuff6299 I'm in eastern Connecticut. The old factories and many of the old farm machines used flat belts. I guess that I am lucky. I have 3 scrap metal yards within an hour's drive. We also have swap meets where all kinds of tools, machines, and parts show up for sale. Since most young people have no interest in these old things, the prices are still reasonable. Thirty years ago, much of the stuff was free, just get it out of their way. BTW, a 41/2" hand grinder could save you some time. Good Luck, Rick

I wonder if crane from scrap metal and or tubing, with a pulley would be a worthwhile project. maybe with some wheels to alow it scooting about the place. Getting the top wheel seemed very labour intense to me and i reckon crane seems like it'd help in that situation.

I suppose it should be 5000ft per minute? I'm trained as a machinist, we had a band saw in our shop that went that far. If i remember correctly, that was for "melt- cutting plexiglass" amongst other stuff. I never used that speed, but i think you can buy diamand- coated saw bands that are meant to cut that fast. Customary speed for cutting steel with high speed steel tools/ band saws is 10-50 m/ minute, so... 35- 165feet/ minute? Depending on hardness of the work, Coolant conditions, ... Rule of thumb: 30m/minute for hss tools, 120 for carbide. I have an old book where they mention melt-cutting steel with extremly fast spinning steel disks- seems like that's a thing they tried in the 1930ies, never heard of it anywhere else.

Lots of old workshops had a shaft somewhere, often the ceiling, that everything was attached to. If you did that you could have the log chomper and the bandsaw set up next to each other and not have to move them whenever you wanted to use the other one b

A short axle mounted to some anchor stand with two wheels and additional belt, and no mods to the original drive pulley would have been necessary. The intermediary wheels could have done all the reduction. But a bit late to think of that at this point.

You should make a jackshaft so you wouldn't have to buy really long belts. So just one belt coming from the engine to the js then from js to which ever implement you want to hook up if you made it long enough you could have say 4 tools hooked in at once

THAT is an excellent idea. After all, old factories used to have long shafts spinning on the ceiling, and other machines would get their power from them with belts...

I was expecting you to make an intermediate two-pulley speed reduction apparatus between the engine and the saw. Of course it wouldn't need a huge wheel as it's the ratio that counts.

Hi Tim. Why didn't you turn the engine around to reverse the direction? This would have been powered by flat belts originally I'd be surprised if you can't work out something if the v belt doesn't work. On Malc of Lincoln channel he sewed the ends of old car seats belts together to make a drive belt on his lister. Just an idea. Good fun as always

@@wayoutwest-workshopstuff6299 I was thinking you could create a piston with a one way valve attachment that pushes the air into the tanks, as for seals, couldn’t you make them out of some rope and creole or pitch/tar to make a rubber like seal?

It looks like a 17 or 18 alloy wheel and the lower band saw wheel maybe 20 inches. What about getting a bigger alloy wheel of the same size. Perhaps then the rmps should in theory be the same. Interesting that the vbelt slips perfectly into the bead of the section of the wheel

Please be careful lifting and pulling stuff. You really need to sit down and weld together a crane that can lift up to 1000lbs. Put it on wheels, have it working from a manual winch and have it so you can push it around. I put my back out early in May pulling a 300-400lb electric wheelchair off a bus lift into a bus. I'm still in physiotheraphy.

@@wayoutwest-workshopstuff6299 Tim, you'll be fine with grease. Your bandsaw top assembly is relative stationary and only adjusted to fix blade tension. The comment about Rucker refers to way-oil used on equipment that moves all the time such as cross slides on lathes. Completey different application. To be honest you'd be fine with lard.

@@davidbrown8365 I agree with your comment about putting what ever you have to hand on the slides as it is better than nothing at all, however I have an allmost identical bandsaw and that top slide is very much constantly moving all be it by very small amounts as there is a spring in between the adjuster and the slide body, I think they do it like that to stop blade breakage if the blade jams but I could be wrong.
