Finally I’m understanding the relationship between the scales and chords! I’m 60 and thought I had a learning disability when it came to understanding the neck. This video has been my breakthrough! Uncle Larry sent me.

I now see the fretboard more easily as I look for the triads and notice the pentatonic scales all around them. Why didn't I learn this so many years ago or was taught it by my teachers? It would have made my guitar journey so much better/quicker. Cheers to you Guthrie for teaching all of us this lesson.

I'm glad you said that penta-peggio idea. I learned a similar lick and its interesting how much more country it sounds when you leave the minor 6 out when you're on ascending but it still sounds country when you use it when you're descending. I'mma use this as a quick way to add that country flavor. thanks!

Wow GT! You go from the village to little Havana! In a month or so Ha! And you still have time to throw us a lesson. What a fantastic drill to learn the fretboard. The little blues tune you played in the beginning, motivated the shit out of me. One last thing I don’t know if anybody said this before, but if you ever get old and strapped for cash, you could always write a book! From an Alabama pirate to a world-class musician, who is definitely underrated for his talent. Personally, I stop what I’m doing just to catch some of it. Thanks for that sure, as hell picks me up. Ps. The book would be a best seller. Hard travelin!🎸❤️

I will have to check out some of your videos on CAGED to see if it all starts to finally click for me! I've never understood how to incorporate the D-shape chord from CAGED, but the way you showed it in this video, not using the 3rd on the high E string, but instead putting the 3rd in the low E string and doing that spread voicing inversion of the chord, it all started to finally make sense how I can incorporate the D-shape into my playing naturally! Thanks for a great video.

Once again , your quick lesson grab is right on what I been trying to familiarise after brain balling triads. Just trying to link pentatonics with triads over 1 4 5 to begin with. Connect it all and get musical. Makes sense in the head , no substitute for time to get it under the fingers and map it out . Thanks again

Guthrie once said to know the melody, chords that build it and all of the information around each chord on the fingerboard. This lesson falls right in line with that. Result? I have naturally "discovered" this pentapeggio Guthrie speaks of and demonstrates at 11:02 and it has expanded the quality of material I cover. I've been gigging around 32 years BUT... Guthrie's ability to connect and teach has helped me stay out of playing ruts that can be so easy to fall into. I then feel empowered to play more which leads to better technique and that expands creativity. Exciting news about the album and pumped for his shows at The Bitter End in NYC in less than 2 weeks!!!

The noodling you did at the first part of the Video, the part where you anchored your hand in the " A" position, and then used your other fingers to noodle around. I used to able to do that- until I broke my left wrist so bad I had to have surgery and they had to put 12 screws in my left hand and wrist. Now I cant do that for the life of me...vary depressing because I LOVE to play the guitar. The point- never take for granted what you have...because you just never know when fate will change your life.....Eric C. and Robert Cray wrote a great blues song that included using that favorite chord of yours. The song is called Old Love, its the same chord except its in the "G" position in lieu of the " A" position. Thats the only song I know of, that uses that chord you love...Please make sure and tell us all the name of your's and (Uncle Larry's) new record so we can listen to it !

The thing I find confusing about major and minor pentatonic is that major has the 2nd and 6th...1,2,3,5,6 yet minor has the 4 and flat 7..1,b3,4,5,b7. it's like it's not it's own scale but more major and minor pentatonic are modes of each other Im kinda lazy so I usually find myself playing the Dickie betz pentatonic which is like a mixolydian or dominant pentatonic 1,3,4,5,b7.. you can also play a version of a major pentatonic that's 1,3,4,5,7... When I play a hybrid scale, I see it in the mibor pentatonic shape. I admit though that my approach is very limiting I'm stuck to that 1st position minor pentatonic shape. I really need to soak this lesson in.. Im very familiar with the caged but I'm not really grasping how the pentatonic is in the caged shapes .. I will get this down though. Great lesson
