When I was a kid, you'd see these kinds of fantastic shows on TV a lot of the time, even though I did not appreciate them at the time. Then along came rock 'n roll, and that was the end of it. Sigh ...

Thanks so much for sharing these extremely rare live clips of Connee. I never thought we Boswell fanatics would ever get to see her tv appearances. My dream is that someday, somehow, someone will find and post episodes from the Pete Kelly's Blues tv seres in which Connee appeared as a speakeasy owner and sang a song each week.

I never realized how influential Connee was until one day when I read that none other than Ella Fitzgerald said that Connee was her inspiration, that Ella tried to sing like she did. Bing LOVED singing with her. High praise! Connee never got the recognition she deserved due to her handicap. Note how her wheelchair is cleverly disguised in this video. These days, the chair would be out in the open.

Thanks for this clip! It was on the Bell Telephone Hour on Oct. 9, 1959. I remember watching it! That was 3 days before I saw the 5 Pennies movie that changed my life. I now own much of Red's music & I perform it all the time in the Midwest. Red took a few days vacation from California & went to New York to do the Bell Telephone show "live." The great NY musicians on this clip are Bob Haggart-bass, Lou McGarity-trombone, Hank D'Amico-clarinet, Cliff Leeman on drums and Marty Napoleon on piano. Some of those guys recorded with Bob Crosby and the Lawson-Haggart Jazz Band. I saw Red in person 2 years later & even though I've worked with some of the greatest trumpet & cornet players - no one sounded as great as Red. Check out my KZfaq videos - I play cornet almost exactly like Red - put in the words RED NICHOLS TRIBUTE LOUISIANA (or IDA or MAMA'S instead of Louisiana) in the Search box and you can see me & the band playing like Red in an outdoor jazz fest. We duplicate the sound of Red's 1950's Capitol Records.

Wow!!!!!! Thanks for sharing this and the other Connee clip from The Julius LaRosa Show, Alan. The one with Red Nichols is most likely from the Firestone of Bell Telephone Hours, right? Much appreciated.

The "dresses" go with the music.. amazing how some people just don't 'get it'. ps. Have a nice day.

@@hanseekhoff1093 It has been suggested tha the dress helped to cover up a wheelchair...not too sure about that...she apparently did have polio as a kid, and had some trouble standing for periods of time...My God, what a combination of looks and talent...and that goes for her sisters too...I wonder why the other two gals chose to drop out of the music scene, so relatively early.
@hanseekhoff10932 жыл бұрын
The dress is perfect for this TV decor and setting of the scene, apart from the fact that Connee preferred to wear long dresses because of her illness.

Conee was amazing. You know you’re doing something right when you’re Ella Fitzgerald’s main influence.
