After a hat trick for Marchessault, Connor McDavid, and the Edmonton Oilers are screwed. They are eliminated from the 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs. They are now tight against the cap and have limited options to improve this team. What would you guys do to help this team win a cup? Could the Oilers make a trade to help them?
What is next for the Edmonton Oilers?
Connor Mcdavid Highlights
The Edmonton Oilers are out of the NHL Playoffs

Well, to be fair, the Vegas goalie didn’t look very good either in those opening minutes. Goalies often bounceback when they’re that shaky early on. Didn’t happen with Skinner though, they probably should have realized that sooner, might have shaken things up enough to light a bigger spark (although they did get almost twice the amount of shots as Vegas did so not sure how much more they could have pressed there).

Make a ridiculous amount of money and hasn't even won a Stanley Cup. What horrible valuations on players these days. I dont care if he scores 200 points in the regular season. The Oilers' current problems; especially the running out of time with 97 and 29, have their roots in previous dumb decisions from the recent past. The Oilers are absolutely legitimate threats to win the cup each year. They were one of the favorites going into the playoffs this year and will be one of the favorites for next year. For years now it's been fashionable to dump on the Oilers. People just get off on it. Admittedly, they've had poor management for most of the last 15 years, and they were not in good shape when Ken Holland took over. Let's be real here though; they're in an infinitely better position now. If you consider that the core of a team is your top 6 forwards, third line center, top 4 D-men, and starting goaltender; they have 5 of 6 top six forwards, a third line center in McLeod, and 3 of 4 top four D-men, and a young, talented goalie in Skinner. They finished the regular season 18-2-1 since the trade deadline. They're legitimately a top 5 team now. The sky isn't falling; they only need to get a tiny bit better. No team wins every year.

@@mkyhou1160 First off, I don't know why Edmonton would give him such a big contract. He was decent for Toronto but there's a reason they wouldn't pay him that much and not just because of the cap. Second, neither goalies are bad, the defense has been bad for many years in Edmonton. I don't think a top goalie alone would help at all. The entire team isn't good all around. I get that McDavid and Dri are dominant scorers but mainly on the power play. Take away the power plays and both aren't much. They need that advantage and neither are good defensively. You can't have a team that only dominates on the PP, have no real defensive forwards, have little defense plus a not great goalie and expect to go very far. If the 2 top guys learn D and can get a few more guys that can score 5v5, get some decent D, I do believe they'd have a great team. Don't rely on 1 goalie either. If you play the tandem and 1 of them gets hot than play him a few games more but you can't put everything on 1 goalie. Skinner was struggling so they should have started Campbell for a game or 2 and see how it goes. Unfortunately we're only fans and have no actual say to what happens with in the team. We think we know best but do we? It's not all cut and dry like most of think. My buddy plays for the Flames and he told me that he was like us when he was younger but quickly realized there's alot more to it. I don't know all the details but there's always more than meets the eye. Also, it's easy to judge players, coaches, etc while we're sitting on the couch watching the game but what it looks like to us vs what it actually is to them in real time is a huge difference. We have to remember that these are all pro athletes. It doesn't matter the amount of money they make, they're playing other pros.

The Oilers got hit by the Gretzky-Fuhr curse. In 1981-1982 Gretzky got 92 goals. Fuhr was a rookie goalie. In 1981 The Oilers barely made the playoffs, but the Panthers barely made the playoffs this season. The Oilers coming out party was a Three game sweep of the 3rd place Canadiens. In 82 they hosted the Kings, Game four the Oilers led 5-0, and were outscored 5-0 in the third and promptly lost in OT. They went to Edmonton and lost the series. This is part one. Part Two. McDavid gets a career high in points this season. Anyone remember when Gretzky did that? 1985-1986. 215 points. Second Round. The Flames are able to hold Gretzky from going wild until it’s game four. By then it’s 2-2. Flames win game five, Oilers win game six. Steve Smith tries to clear a Perry Berezan dump in, while being forechecked by Lanny. It hits the back of Fuhr’s ankle and bounces into the Oilers net. Flames hold the Oilers off, avoiding an own goal of their own through the last 15 minutes. Skinner Rookie goalie, Fuhr Rookie Goalie. McDavid career high, Gretzky’s league leading marks. OILERS CURSE!!! Don’t think so? Ask the 65 win Bruins how the regular season helped them win the Cup this season!

Oilers have about 8 players that are just too old, over 30. They have to replace these 8 players. Not only that, but after all these years they don't understand why a team like VGN could win. The reason is because Oilers don't care about +/-, whereas if you look at the +/- of the players on Vegas, you can see they all have great +/- numbers. The mistake they made also against VGN was the players were exhausted. Oilers needed abour 4 or 5 guys that can take off the load for a game. That's what VGN did. Also it's possible Oilers might have won without Skinner. Skinner did not save us a single game. He was less than average. Not horrible, just less than average.

You conveniently forgot to mention - oilers might also not have made it to the post season without skinner, too. There's a reason Campbell wasn't played, and in case you're forgetting, he wasn't invincible in the time he played in relief, he got scored on as well. Which is probably the main reason Woodcroft was reluctant to put him in as the starter. Can't have your cake and eat it too. Just admit it, Ken Holland made a doozy last summer signing him to that contract.

Trade Yamamoto and a pick or high draft prospect for a 2/3rd line dman. Yams is 3.1 mil a year for 1 more year it’s not a bad contract for a team looking to add a hard working 3rd line winger and if oilers sweeten it with a 1st round pick they could get a decent 2/3rd defenceman and they could even trade out or buy out a contract like devin shore to add a bit more cap space and then call up Dylan Holloway to replace Yamamoto. Oilers weakness is defence and this is the only trade I could see the oilers making that would actually make the team better.

Why isn't anyone talking about the coach? Everyone talks about goaltending, and new defencemen, but never the coach who had NO ANSWER to the VGK and Bruce Cassidy? Oh, is it because he beat a senile old prick in Darryl Sutter? A man who seemingly did everything he could to sabotage the Flames' chances of advancing past the oil?? Jay Woodcroft is at best, a middle of the pack coach whose only solution for when another team won't allow McDrai to do whatever the hell they want is to shorten the bench and double shift those guys. He does particularly well against old farts like Todd Mclellan and Darryl Sutter because those guys have allowed the modern game to pass them by. You seen what happened against VGK and last year's Avs team. You don't win games against the oilers by turtling in your zone and letting the oilers have all the space to break out against you. You make THEM defend against you, they're weak on defence and only one team can have the puck at once. Be that team and then they can't score on you. Todd mclellan should have been fired last year. Darryl Sutter as well, it only took losing their two superstars & a significant portion of their roster threatening to quit this summer for Flames mgmt. to do the right thing. As long as Todd mclellan remains behind LA's bench, I fully expect another LA vs. EDM matchup next year, with similar (or worse) results for the Kings. Who knows, maybe the oilers will sweep the Kings when they inevitably hide out in their own zone doing that dreaded 1 - 3 - 1. Maybe then they might get rid of Todd ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

You cannot win when you have three or four top-players. The leafs lost because they didn't show up for three games, their core-four was reduced to Willy, and they were beaten like a red-headed step-child, even in their own barn...lots of reasons. Blaming Kane, blaming Mac...silly. Your team's 'D' is a sieve, your net-minding is farsical, you lost because your team isn't enough...I thought the Leafs were enough, and they are, but you have to show-up, you have to stand up for yourself. In a short bit, the best four or five players in Canada will be gone, plying their trade in the sunny states, maybe Hawaii if Bettman keeps this crap up. We had a chance at an all-Canadian final, and we blew it. Thirty-one years it will be come October without a Cup here. Yet people still think Bettman has nothing to do with it.
