Damn, I feel like coaches and analysts can study this penalty shot for a while as a case study in both goaltending and shooting. The way McDavid used angles here was definitely what I'd call "surgical".

Penalty was worth it by Bobrovsky, McDavid would have scored anyway if Bobrovsky didn't hit him so might as well get a penalty for a second chance.

Completely disagree. Not a guaranteed goal at all. More pressure on a breakaway as he knows people are behind him and he has less room to manoeuvre. I’d bet bobrovksy would rather defend a breakaway vs a penalty shot any day, especially when it involves McDavid.

@@furedosan3464 You're probably new to hockey so I'll give you a pass this time, but shootouts are not the same as a penalty shot, despite the fact they may look similar. Penalty shots occur in the game and have an entirely different feel and pressure to them, whereas shootouts occur at the end of the game to break a tie.

All I said was penalty shots and shootouts are different so you can't use shootouts to defend your penalty shot vs breakaway argument. That being said, you are an idiot if you think that being on a high paced breakaway approaching from the side with defenders harassing you is a better scoring chance than a penalty shot.

Who are these announcers? A 10bell save from Picard or whoever that G was in net for Edmonton. Really it starts with a 10?? save?? Where was that?..Cmon ya trying to hard to sell the game a 7 at best. Has the goaltending in Edmonton gotten that bad? These guys fake excitement is such a turnoff. Nice goal from a great player on a team in shambles.

A poke check against Mcdavid is a sure fire goal, his hands are so quick and the goalie is so vulnerable with a poke check it will be open season. Although its nearly impossible to defend in any way against Mcdavid

So um, how about we discuss the fact that Bob robbed McDavid and Draisaitl after the early first period. He let nothing else in, other than this penalty shot. I don't really know who would have stopped that. The save on Draisaitl should be all over the highlights, tbh. Beauty of a save but sure, keep on doubting him. Tied for 20th all-time for wins now and he's going to get more. Gonna end up passing Hasek with 21 more wins.

If a defending player throws his stick to block a shot against his team's empty net, play will be stopped, and a goal will be automatically awarded to the attacking team. ...kinda feels like the same time-saver should be put in effect when McDavid gets a penalty shot. 😂

I’m sorry. I’m a goalie. And much as I like McDavid (super class act, super generational talent)… that was not what I’d call a classic, proper penalty shot. That was a terrible shoot-out walk-in…. We HAVE**** to alter the rules so that Penalty Shots, and of course, Shoot-out’s (which ought to be identical) are ALL BASED on REAL-LIFE breakaways, as if a defender is tailing you. You HAVE to rush the goalie, vs. walking in like Patrick Kane tap-dancing with his stick like Fred Astaire on a Sunday afternoon stroll. You can’t do that. And there’s not even enough momentum to cross the goal line on either side of the net. THAT, ladies and gentlemen, should the the RULE as confirmed by a ref at his/her direction… that the motion was in full-sweep, and moving fast enough. YOU CANNOT slow down to a crawl. It’s a mockery of the game, and makes it completely useless and cringeworthy watching players get cheap goals - which is the last thing that feels like real, fast-paced, elegant hockey. EVERYBODY we have to change the rules. No more shoot-out walk-up’s….!!

He got fouled hard. Don't trip him in the first place if you don't want to let him walk in on a penalty shot. However I do agree that the penalty shootout is a brutal way to lose a game and that OT should be longer to reduce the amount of games that end in shootouts.

@@ivanooze1049 but there are no defenders on a penalty shot. It's a different scenario. In football they don't run for the ball full speed on a penalty, they take their time. In floorball they walk very, very slowly. I don't get it. Why should they skate fast?

NHL should change its penalty shot rules. Little ridiculous that you can move that slowly toward the goal. This is what I'd like to see: 1. Penalty shooter starts at center ice. 2. Everyone else behind the blue line. 3. As soon as shooter touches the puck, everyone else can chase. 4. If the shot is saved, the play continues live. 5. Anyone in the lineup can take the penalty shot, not necessarily the player fouled.
